Run FFmpeg directly as a systemd service and set Restart=on-failure with a deliberate RestartSec= delay. systemd can relaunch FFmpeg after an abnormal exit, but that does not prove YouTube has resumed the public broadcast; check YouTube Studio or the viewer endpoint after recovery.
What systemd can—and cannot—recover
systemd supervises the FFmpeg process. With Restart=on-failure, it retries after a non-zero exit, qualifying abnormal signal, operation timeout, or watchdog timeout. It does not restart a service that an administrator deliberately stops with systemd. A clean exit is not a failure under this policy.
That supervision only helps when FFmpeg exits or a configured timeout/watchdog detects a problem. If FFmpeg remains running but its output is stalled, a restart policy alone may not notice. Detecting stalled stream progress requires a separate health check or watchdog designed and tested for your particular command.
Process recovery and broadcast recovery are separate: after FFmpeg restarts, verify that it has connected and that the intended public broadcast is live. systemd restart behavior does not establish how YouTube will handle a particular ingest interruption.

Create a systemd service for FFmpeg
Use a normal service unit and let systemd track FFmpeg as the main process. The following is an illustrative template, not a universal or tested FFmpeg command; substitute the input and encoding options that suit your source and confirm the binary path on your host.
# /etc/systemd/system/youtube-ffmpeg.service
[Unit]
Description=FFmpeg YouTube livestream
Wants=network-online.target
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
ExecStart=/usr/bin/ffmpeg [input and encoding options] -f flv rtmp://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/REDACTED_STREAM_KEY
Restart=on-failure
RestartSec=5s
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
RestartSec=5s is an example delay, not a universal recommendation. Choose a pause that avoids a rapid retry loop and gives transient network or ingest problems a chance to clear. Replace the redacted key with your own credential without publishing it; use a protected configuration mechanism appropriate to your host. Do not add shell backgrounding such as &: systemd should supervise FFmpeg itself, not a wrapper whose child process can obscure service state.

Choose a restart policy
| Setting | Clean FFmpeg exit | Failure behavior | When it fits |
|---|---|---|---|
Restart=on-failure |
Remains stopped | Retries qualifying failures, timeouts, and watchdog failures | A long-running stream where a clean exit should remain visible |
Restart=always |
Retries after the clean exit too | Retries after exits, subject to systemd limits | Only when any process exit should relaunch FFmpeg |
Neither policy overrides an administrator’s deliberate systemctl stop. always can also hide an unexpected clean end by immediately launching the process again, so use it only when that is intended. For an always-running stream, on-failure is generally the clearer default.

sudo systemctl daemon-reload sudo systemctl restart youtube-ffmpeg.service -
After an automatic retry, inspect the logs and verify the actual broadcast in YouTube Studio or through the viewer endpoint. A running service alone is not confirmation that viewers can see a live broadcast.
Understand start-rate limits and reset a blocked service
Retries are subject to systemd start-rate limits. Repeated quick failures can exhaust the allowed starts, after which the service may remain failed rather than retrying indefinitely. RestartSec= spaces out retries but does not remove the limit. The accepted unit settings and their behavior depend on the systemd release installed on your host; consult man systemd.unit there before setting StartLimitIntervalSec= or StartLimitBurst=.

If systemd has stopped trying, first read the journal and identify the FFmpeg error. Once you have addressed the cause and a restart is appropriate, clear the failed state and rate-limit counter, then start the unit:
sudo systemctl reset-failed youtube-ffmpeg.service
sudo systemctl start youtube-ffmpeg.service
reset-failed clears systemd’s failed state and start-rate counter; it does not repair an invalid stream key, broken input, network fault, or encoding error.
Troubleshoot common recovery failures
- The service is failed and no longer retries: repeated failures may have hit the start-rate limit. Read
journalctl -u youtube-ffmpeg.service, fix the underlying error, then usereset-failedand start the service if appropriate. - FFmpeg exits immediately after each start: inspect the journal for command-line, input, credential, or connection errors. Verify the local FFmpeg path and options, and test the command with the same protected configuration before changing restart limits.
- The service says active, but the broadcast is unavailable: systemd sees a running process, not necessarily healthy stream progress. Check FFmpeg output and confirm the broadcast at YouTube Studio or the viewer endpoint.
- FFmpeg hangs instead of exiting:
Restart=on-failuredoes not by itself detect a process that remains alive without useful output. Add a health-check or watchdog design only after defining how your specific command can reliably report stalled progress. - FFmpeg options in an example do not work locally: option availability can vary by build. The online FFmpeg documentation tracks the newest revision; consult the documentation installed with your older local version.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube stream of uploaded video without maintaining an always-on Linux host and systemd service, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud.
- Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
- It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card; one free day is available per account.
- The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month.
