This keeps FFmpeg independent of an SSH session, but it does not guarantee that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream: the source, stream key, network, encoder settings, and YouTube broadcast must all be working. Check both the local service and YouTube Live Control Room.
What systemd can—and cannot—keep running
A systemd service manages the local FFmpeg process: it can start it at boot, restart it after a failure, and send its output to the system journal. It cannot repair an invalid stream key, unreadable or unsuitable media, an unsupported FFmpeg build, a broken network connection, or a YouTube broadcast that has ended or been rejected. An active service is evidence that a local process is running, not that viewers can watch a healthy broadcast.
This guide uses a Linux host, FFmpeg, a file to loop or another FFmpeg input, and a YouTube Live stream configured in Live Control Room. The paths, account names, and unit settings below are examples; confirm them against your distribution and setup.
Prepare the Linux host and stream credentials
Create a service account and working directory
Use a dedicated, unprivileged account rather than running FFmpeg as root. For example, this setup assumes an account named stream and a working directory at /srv/stream. Ensure the account can read the media file and any configuration it needs, and that the installed executable really is at /usr/bin/ffmpeg. These values vary by system.

Keep the stream key out of the unit file
Get the current RTMPS server address and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. Store the key in a root-controlled environment file, not in a broadly readable unit file or a command that could remain in shell history. Restrict file permissions and grant read access only to the service as needed. Never publish or share the actual key; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to that broadcast.
For a service using EnvironmentFile, a root-owned file such as /etc/stream/ffmpeg.env can hold the value. Protect the directory and file with restrictive ownership and permissions, and use a value format that the service and FFmpeg command can consume safely. Do not assume that quoting, special characters, or shell expansion work identically in every environment-file context; validate the configuration on your system without exposing the secret.
Configure FFmpeg for YouTube Live
Use the current ingest address and key
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. Use the exact RTMPS server address shown in Live Control Room, together with the stream key assigned there. YouTube’s API describes primary and backup ingestion addresses and the common pattern of combining a stream URL with a stream name. Do not substitute a remembered or hard-coded address from an old tutorial.

ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream
For YouTube, adapt the input, encoding options, and output URL to your media and current Live Control Room details. A looping file also needs a looping input strategy appropriate to the source; -re paces file reading in real time, but does not by itself make a file repeat forever. Consult the FFmpeg protocol documentation for supported protocol behavior and options: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation.
Choose encoding settings that fit the source and connection
YouTube’s encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. The right bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, and the upload connection must sustain it. YouTube recommends testing with similar audio and motion and monitoring stream health and messages while live.
| Example H.264 output | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommendation |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| Stereo audio | Not stated | 128 Kbps |
These are YouTube guidance figures, not guarantees of performance. Select settings your sustained upload can support, and test before relying on the stream.
Illustrative FFmpeg command shape
The following shows where input, encoding, and output belong; it is not a ready-to-run command. Replace the placeholders, choose encoder options for your source, and ensure the secret is passed without exposing it in logs or process listings. The actual RTMPS URL and key must come from Live Control Room.

-r 30 -g 60 -c:a aac -b:a 128k
-f flv "RTMPS_URL/STREAM_KEY"
This example’s encoding values illustrate a possible 720p30-class bitrate and two-second GOP at 30 fps; they are not universal recommendations. Match resolution and frame rate to the media, use an encoder available in your FFmpeg build, and apply an appropriate rate-control configuration. If the stream key is interpolated into an argument, understand that command-line arguments may be visible to local users or diagnostic tools. Use a safer credential-passing arrangement for your environment rather than treating this placeholder form as secret-safe.
Create and enable the systemd unit
Create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service as a root-managed unit. This example uses a simple service, dedicated user and group, working directory, environment file, restart delay, explicit termination behavior, and journal logging. Confirm the directives and paths against the systemd version installed on your Linux host.

YOUTUBE_OUTPUT above stands for the output value your environment supplies; it is a placeholder, not a literal URL. Because environment-file parsing and argument expansion depend on how the service command is defined, test that FFmpeg receives the intended output without disclosing the key. If shell expansion is required, use a carefully controlled wrapper script with restrictive permissions and an explicit interpreter; do not assume ExecStart behaves like an interactive shell.

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable --now ffmpeg-youtube.service
Enabling arranges for the service to start at boot; starting it now tests the current configuration. A restart delay limits immediate repeated launches, but a restart policy cannot correct a persistent configuration or remote-side problem.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Verify the local process and the YouTube broadcast separately
Check systemd status and logs
Use these commands to inspect the local service state and recent journal messages:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -n 100 --no-pager
For ongoing logs, follow the journal with sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f. Look for input-open errors, permission failures, encoder initialization problems, connection errors, and repeated exits. A status of active only describes the service process at that moment.
Confirm stream health in Live Control Room
Open YouTube Live Control Room and verify the preview, stream health, and any warnings or errors. YouTube’s API distinguishes stream states such as active, ready, inactive, and error, and separately reports health and configuration issues. Confirm that the broadcast is actually live and receiving the intended picture and sound; local systemd status cannot establish that.

Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Service fails immediately or repeatedly restarts | Executable path, unit syntax, permissions, missing input, unsupported encoder | Read systemctl status and the unit journal; verify paths, account access, and FFmpeg build support before changing restart behavior. |
| FFmpeg runs but YouTube shows no incoming stream | Ingest address, key, network, protocol support | Re-copy the RTMPS address and key from Live Control Room, check logs, and verify the build supports RTMPS. |
| SSL or RTMPS connection error | Wrong scheme/server or port/network handling | Confirm both protocol and server are rtmps. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance suggests trying port 443 for some SSL errors and checking RTMPS support in the encoder build. |
| Service is active but the broadcast is unhealthy or ended | YouTube broadcast state, ingest health, rejected or ended broadcast | Inspect Live Control Room’s preview, health messages, and broadcast state; restarting the local process may not revive a broadcast YouTube has ended or rejected. |
| Video or audio is missing, choppy, or unstable | Input media, selected codecs, encoder settings, upload capacity | Check FFmpeg’s input and encoder logs, compare the output settings with YouTube guidance, and test with similar motion and audio while monitoring stream health. |
Understand the trade-off: self-managed host or cloud service
A systemd setup gives you control of the Linux host, files, and FFmpeg configuration. In return, you maintain the machine, power, Internet connection, storage, software, and monitoring. Local power or network loss can interrupt the stream, and recovery still depends on the source, credentials, and YouTube broadcast state.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a hosted option for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos without leaving a home computer on: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops the uploaded content in the cloud and is designed to recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. It supports YouTube only and plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera.
- Nothing at home has to stay powered on for the stream to continue.
- Uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers.
- Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
- The first day is free with no card required.
The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
