Yes, a Raspberry Pi 4 can be part of an FFmpeg-to-YouTube streaming setup, but that does not establish that a particular playlist will run unattended 24/7. Raspberry Pi documents a Pi 4 hardware H.264 encoding configuration for FFmpeg’s h264_v4l2m2m encoder. Playlist looping, compatible files, RTMPS support, network stability and recovery after failures still need to be tested on your exact setup.
There is also an important replay limitation: YouTube says a live stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. A continuous broadcast and a complete YouTube archive are not the same thing.
What a Pi 4 can—and cannot—do
Raspberry Pi’s H.264 encoding performance documentation includes an FFmpeg configuration using the Pi 4 hardware encoder, h264_v4l2m2m. That establishes that Pi 4 hardware H.264 encoding is available; it is not an end-to-end test of YouTube ingest, playlist looping or 24/7 reliability.
A prerecorded playlist and a live camera feed are different jobs. A playlist needs repeated file playback, sensible transitions and continuous timestamps; a camera feed needs a working capture device and compatible capture settings. Historical Raspberry Pi forum posts describe camera-oriented streaming experiments, but they are anecdotes, not a current, validated recipe for a Pi 4 playlist.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
In particular, the available evidence does not establish one current Raspberry Pi OS and FFmpeg version combination that will handle every playlist format and YouTube RTMPS endpoint. Test your actual files, software build and connection before relying on the setup.
Match the outgoing stream to YouTube’s requirements
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265 (HEVC) or AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, and constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the ingest protocol and URL shown for your stream in Live Control Room; do not assume an old rtmp:// example is encrypted or that its endpoint still applies.

For a straightforward Pi H.264 setup, choose a resolution and frame rate the source and encoder can sustain, then keep the video bitrate within YouTube’s published guidance. These are YouTube-listed H.264 video bitrates, not a guarantee that your internet connection can sustain them:
| Ingest resolution and frame rate | Minimum video bitrate | Recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 360p / 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 3 Mbps |
| 480p / 30 fps | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p / 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p / 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p / 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p / 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
Leave upload headroom rather than treating the listed bitrate as a connection-speed target. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and checking stream health. Its advanced settings recommend stereo audio at 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; accepted audio codecs for RTMP/RTMPS include AAC and MP3. For files without audio, decide deliberately whether to provide silence or another audio track and test the result rather than copying an old forum command.

Prepare YouTube and protect the stream key
- Create or schedule the stream in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and select the stream you will use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there into your encoder configuration. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain that these let the encoder send a feed for YouTube to accept. The key is a credential: keep it private, and do not expose it in published scripts, screenshots, shell history or logs. Use a placeholder such as
<STREAM_KEY>in any shared example, never your real key. - Set your output to YouTube’s current ingest requirements. Use the displayed endpoint and protocol, a supported codec, CBR, an appropriate resolution and frame rate, and a two-second keyframe interval where possible (never over four seconds).
- Send a representative test before relying on the stream. Include the actual playlist files, expected audio, and the intended bitrate. Check the YouTube preview, health indicators and messages, and watch the audio and video for problems.
YouTube’s encoder guidance states, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” A successful short test is useful, but it does not prove that the same Pi, files, software and connection will recover unattended from a later interruption.
Plan for playlist continuity and failures
A 24/7 process has to cope with more than successful playback. A file may fail to open; the playlist may reach its end; FFmpeg may exit; power, network or storage may fail. Those are operational risks to plan and test, not features guaranteed by the Pi encoder or YouTube.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
- Check the source path: confirm each file plays and has compatible video and audio. A file that needs decoding and re-encoding adds work compared with a compatible stream-copy path; verify the chosen path on the Pi rather than assuming every file will pass through unchanged.
- Check continuity: test playlist repetition and file transitions, including audio at the boundaries. Confirm that timestamps remain acceptable to the encoder and YouTube.
- Supervise the process: arrange a way to detect an FFmpeg exit and decide how it should be restarted. Test what happens after a network interruption or reboot; do not infer automatic recovery from the hardware encoder’s existence.
- Monitor storage and logs: watch for growing local recordings, exhausted disk space and errors. Keep the stream key out of logs and shared files.
- Monitor YouTube: check stream health, messages and actual audio/video quality during a representative test. YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing and monitoring.
Do not rely on YouTube for a full 24-hour replay
YouTube Help’s archive guidance says streams under 12 hours can be archived automatically, but a stream exceeding 12 hours “may not be captured at all.” The under-12-hour wording is not a guarantee that every stream will archive successfully. If you need a complete record of a continuous program, make and verify a local recording, including checking that the file continues to grow. If separate YouTube replays matter, consider ending and restarting planned sessions within the stated archive window.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is an always-on prerecorded YouTube channel rather than experimenting with a Pi, StreamNeo is a cloud service that loops uploaded videos or playlists. The three steps are: upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and UPI works for customers in India.
