To change the video without ending a YouTube live stream, keep the encoder connected and switch the media source, scene, or playlist in the software sending the stream. In OBS, use a Media Source for a video file or a VLC Video source for a playlist, then change the active scene or playlist item while the output remains live. YouTube Studio does not document a universal control for replacing media inside every encoder.
Change the video in the encoder, not in YouTube Studio
YouTube receives a live feed from your encoder. Its documented encoder setup connects the software using a stream URL and stream key; the encoder determines what video and audio are in that feed. YouTube’s instructions explain how to connect an encoder and end a stream, but do not provide one Studio button that swaps the local media in every third-party encoder. Use the playback or production controls in the software currently sending the feed.
The exact controls depend on the encoder, its version and operating system, and whether the current input is a file, playlist, browser source, capture feed, or cloud playout source. The OBS steps below apply to the described OBS media workflow; they are not a guaranteed sequence for every encoder setup.
Switch videos in OBS while the stream stays live
- Prepare the next video. In OBS, add it as a Media Source, or create a VLC Video source and add the files to its playlist. OBS documents looping and restart-on-activation controls for Media Sources. Its VLC Video source supports playlists and a Loop Playlist option; VLC must be installed for that source to appear.
- Set up the handoff. For a controlled visual change, place each video in its own scene, or arrange the sources within a scene. OBS scenes are layouts made from sources such as media and devices. Preview the scene or playlist output before making it active.
- Switch the content. Select the scene containing the intended video, or advance the VLC playlist. Leave OBS’s stream output running. Since OBS continues sending the encoder feed to YouTube, changing the content in OBS changes what that feed contains without a documented need to end the YouTube event. This follows from YouTube’s encoder connection model and OBS’s media features; it is not a platform guarantee for every configuration.
- Check the result. Confirm the preview shows the right video and that its audio is audible and correct. Do not reset or change the stream key for an ordinary media switch; YouTube documents resetting a key for situations such as a compromised key.
What to expect from YouTube Studio
YouTube documents creating an encoder stream, copying the stream URL and key into encoder settings, and ending a stream by stopping the encoder feed or selecting End Stream. It does not document a cross-encoder Studio control for choosing a different local file during an active event. Keep the event live and make the change in the encoder or playout software that supplies its feed.

Plan for the limits of a 24/7 broadcast
Keep your own archive
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams that are less than 12 hours. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so a continuous 24/7 broadcast should not rely on YouTube’s archive as its only recording. Keep a local archive if you need a recording.
Do not assume viewers can rewind the whole stream
YouTube says DVR may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers may therefore be unable to rewind through the entire continuous broadcast.

Monitor the handoff
After switching, verify the encoder preview, video, audio, and continuing output. YouTube’s live-stream tips recommend monitoring audio and video quality; a successful scene change on one setup does not establish that another setup is working correctly.
Troubleshoot a video change that does not work
- The old video is still on air: Check that you changed the active scene or advanced the playlist in the encoder that is actually sending the YouTube feed. Preview the intended output before trying again.
- The VLC Video source is missing: OBS requires VLC to be installed for that source to appear. Install it, then check the source list again.
- The new video appears but has no sound: Check the source’s audio and the OBS output meters, then confirm the audible result. YouTube recommends monitoring both audio and video quality.
- The YouTube event ended: Changing a file or scene is distinct from stopping the encoder feed or using End Stream. Check whether the encoder output is still running and whether the event remains active in YouTube Studio; do not reset the stream key as a routine fix.
- Your controls do not match these steps: The workflow varies by encoder, version, operating system, and input type. Find the playback or scene controls for the software supplying the feed rather than assuming YouTube Studio can replace that source.
Or let it run in the cloud
