How to Keep a Prerecorded YouTube Livestream Running After a Server Reboot

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To resume a prerecorded YouTube livestream after a server reboot, configure the encoder to start automatically at boot and restart if it exits. On Linux, a systemd service can run FFmpeg this way. You must also ensure the service can access the video, network, and current YouTube stream key—and verify how the scheduled broadcast handles encoder restarts. A reconnect option alone is not enough: it may address a dropped connection while the encoder is running, but a reboot stops the encoder process.

What has to happen after a reboot

A reboot ends the running encoder process. Recovery therefore has two separate parts: the operating system must launch the encoder again, and the encoder must be able to send video to YouTube using the right ingest URL and stream key. A streaming application’s reconnect setting may help with a temporary network interruption, but does not by itself start the application after the whole server restarts.

YouTube documents how to connect an encoder to Live Control Room; it does not prescribe how to configure a host to recover after reboot. A systemd service running FFmpeg is one possible Linux implementation, not a YouTube-guaranteed recovery method. Its command, service unit, and broadcast behavior depend on your OS, FFmpeg build, media, and channel configuration.

Set up the YouTube stream and encoder

  1. Create or select the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, create a stream or select a scheduled stream in Live Control Room. Scheduling lets you promote an event and share its watch page ahead of time. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the selected event.
  2. Configure the ingest details. Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into the encoder. YouTube describes the key as a password: keep it private. If you reset it, replace the old key in the encoder configuration. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
  3. Decide how the broadcast should start and stop. Review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. When enabled, YouTube says the stream can be started or stopped from the encoder. Choose settings that fit the intended unattended workflow, then confirm how they behave with your event in Live Control Room. Do not assume that restarting an encoder automatically recreates or resumes the same event.
  4. Make sure the encoder can read and send. The service account needs access to the media file and configuration, and the host needs working network access to YouTube’s ingest service after boot.
  5. Check YouTube before relying on automation. Start the encoder, wait for the preview, and follow the current Live Control Room process to go live for the scheduled stream. Confirm the preview and stream health rather than assuming that a running service means viewers can see the broadcast.

Run FFmpeg as a boot-time Linux service

For a self-managed Linux server, use a service manager such as systemd to launch FFmpeg at boot and restart it after an unexpected exit. The YouTube-AutoEncoder project is an example of FFmpeg managed with systemd; treat it as an implementation example, not a universal unit file or guarantee. Adapt the configuration to your actual host, FFmpeg command, media path, and YouTube stream lifecycle.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Make the service persistent across reboots rather than launching FFmpeg only from an interactive shell. Configure a restart policy with a delay or rate limit so a bad path, invalid key, or unavailable network does not trigger a rapid failure loop. Ensure the service has an appropriate working directory and permissions, and that its media and credentials are available to the service account at startup. Check the systemd service state and logs after starting it. Exact unit contents and FFmpeg arguments are deployment-specific; validate them against your OS and FFmpeg installation instead of copying an unverified command.

Recovery checklist before you depend on it

  • Confirm the service is enabled to start at boot and has a restart policy for unexpected encoder exits.
  • Check the media path, file permissions, working directory, and any credentials from the service account’s perspective.
  • Allow for network availability after startup. If the encoder repeatedly fails, investigate DNS, firewall rules, outbound ingest connectivity, and server load.
  • Keep the stream key secret; if you reset it in YouTube, update the encoder’s stored value.
  • Confirm the scheduled stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings match the intended workflow and verify the actual event behavior in Live Control Room.
  • Perform a controlled reboot. Then inspect the service state and logs and confirm the Live Control Room preview and viewer-facing stream. A configuration should be verified on the actual host and channel before unattended use.

What to expect from the YouTube archive

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its guidance also describes stopping the send or ending the stream in Live Control Room, depending on the workflow. That archive rule does not establish that an encoder restart will seamlessly resume the same event or preserve one uninterrupted archive. Check the current behavior for your event rather than promising continuity based on the archive rule alone. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Self-managed server or hosted cloud option?

With a self-managed server, you control the encoder arguments, media files, and logs, but you are responsible for boot recovery and host maintenance. A hosted service can reduce the need to keep your own server running; verify its documented restart and YouTube reconnection behavior rather than assuming it is guaranteed. For a YouTube-only option that plays uploaded videos from the cloud, StreamNeo is first to consider: it runs always on from the cloud, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives a first day free.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos to YouTube from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. Each slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, playlists and 24/7 looping, and automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Your upload streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers; every plan has the same product, with billing length as the difference. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. The monthly price is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
