YouTube’s live encoder guidance specifies CBR; VBR appearing as an encoder option does not make it YouTube’s recommended setting. Choose your bitrate separately based on the codec, resolution, frame rate and stable upload capacity.
Why CBR is the recommended choice for YouTube Live
YouTube’s official live encoder settings specify “Bitrate encoding: CBR.” CBR aims to keep the stream’s bitrate consistent, which matches the platform’s stated encoder guidance.
VBR (variable bitrate) is available in some encoder workflows, but that availability is not a recommendation for YouTube Live. OBS’s documentation for NVENC describes VBR-specific behavior; it does not establish that VBR is preferable for YouTube or that every OBS encoder behaves the same way.
Set rate control and bitrate separately
Choose CBR in your OBS encoder settings
In OBS, find the rate-control setting for the encoder selected for your stream and choose CBR. The exact label and available options depend on the encoder and OBS version; the reviewed OBS guidance does not establish one menu path that applies to every setup. If you use NVENC, OBS notes that maxBitRate is used for VBR and ignored for CBR mode. That is an encoder-option distinction, not a reason to select VBR for YouTube.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set a bitrate for your output mode
CBR answers how the encoder controls bitrate; it does not tell you what bitrate to enter. YouTube’s current live encoder table recommends H.264 at 8 Mbps for 720p at 60 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube Help recommendations for those specific output modes, not universal targets for every codec, resolution or frame rate. The page does not state a publication date; these figures were present when accessed in 2026. Check YouTube’s current table for your codec and output mode.
Check upload capacity, keyframes and transport
- Leave upload headroom: YouTube recommends leaving 20% of upload bandwidth unused. Make sure your stable upload capacity can carry the stream’s total bitrate with that room available; do not base the choice on a brief peak speed.
- Set keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS if appropriate: YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Transport protocol and rate control are separate settings: choosing RTMPS does not change the CBR recommendation.
These recommendations appear in YouTube’s live encoder settings and streaming tips. YouTube’s streaming-tips page recommends 20% headroom; its publication date is not stated, and the figure was present when accessed in 2026.

Test and monitor the actual stream
- Set the encoder to CBR, then enter a bitrate suited to your codec, resolution and frame rate.
- Run a test with audio and movement similar to the planned broadcast. A quiet screen or test without the real audio load may not represent the event.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and the live event. If you encounter connection problems, OBS’s connection troubleshooting guidance recommends considering a lower video bitrate. Recheck that the revised total bitrate fits your stable upload capacity.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a prerecorded YouTube stream that loops continuously, StreamNeo can run uploaded videos from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the stream plays your uploads rather than broadcasting a camera, and StreamNeo is for YouTube only.
