On Linux, run FFmpeg as a systemd service and enable that service for boot. Keep the YouTube stream key in a restricted environment file, not in the unit’s command line. Configure systemd to restart FFmpeg if it exits, then verify both the service logs and the stream’s status in YouTube Studio: an active process alone does not prove the broadcast is healthy.
What this setup assumes
The example below is for a Linux machine using systemd. It assumes FFmpeg is installed at /usr/bin/ffmpeg, a dedicated stream user exists, your media file is under /srv/stream, and you have created a YouTube live stream and obtained its stream key. Adapt the account, paths, input and FFmpeg options to your machine. Other operating systems need a different boot-service mechanism.
YouTube ingest settings can depend on the stream and account. Consult YouTube’s current live-streaming documentation for your setup rather than treating third-party codec, bitrate, frame-rate or keyframe examples as universal requirements.
1. Store the stream key in a restricted file
Create /etc/stream/ffmpeg.env and put the key there, using a placeholder only while editing:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY=YOUR_KEY_HERE
Set ownership and permissions so root can manage the file and the service’s group can read it:
sudo chown root:stream /etc/stream/ffmpeg.env
sudo chmod 0640 /etc/stream/ffmpeg.env
Do not put a real key in a public repository, screenshots, or shell commands that may be saved in history. Treat it as a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to publish to the associated stream. If it is exposed, replace or revoke it through the relevant YouTube controls.
2. Create a systemd unit
Create /etc/systemd/system/ffmpeg-youtube.service. The unit structure below sets the service to start after the network is considered online, runs it as the dedicated account, reads the environment file and sends output to the journal. Replace the illustrative ExecStart with the complete FFmpeg command suited to your media and current YouTube ingest settings.

The ellipsis is not a valid production command: replace it with your actual FFmpeg arguments and input. Ensure the service user can read the media and access any required files. The WantedBy=multi-user.target installation setting lets systemd attach the unit to the normal multi-user boot target when enabled.

3. Enable it at boot and start it now
Enabling a service configures it to start on future boots; starting it launches it in the current session. After saving the unit, run:
sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl enable ffmpeg-youtube.service
sudo systemctl start ffmpeg-youtube.service
Check its immediate state with:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service
To confirm boot behavior, reboot during a safe maintenance window and check the service again after the machine returns. Do not assume the test succeeded just because the machine booted or the unit is marked enabled.

4. Understand what restarts—and what does not
Systemd restarts an exited FFmpeg process
Restart=always tells systemd to start the service again when its process exits; RestartSec=15 inserts a 15-second delay. This can recover from a process crash or exit, but it cannot correct a persistent cause such as a wrong key, unreadable or missing input, or unavailable network. Those can produce a repeated restart loop.
FFmpeg output recovery is a separate layer
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer offers output-level recovery for some temporary failures while the process remains alive. Its documented example uses -f fifo, -fifo_format flv, -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1, -attempt_recovery 1 and -recovery_wait_time 1 to attempt recovery repeatedly. That example targets a generic RTMP server; validate the options with your FFmpeg build and actual ingest endpoint before relying on them.

Choose the transport and ingest settings for your endpoint
FFmpeg documents RTMP publishing syntax and describes RTMPS as “The Real-Time Messaging Protocol over a secure SSL connection.” Use a secure transport when supported by the selected ingest endpoint. The available material does not establish one current YouTube URL scheme or universal encoder values, so verify those in YouTube’s live-streaming guidance for your stream.

Inspect the service and its logs
Use systemd’s status and journal to see whether FFmpeg is running, restarting, or exiting with errors:
sudo systemctl status ffmpeg-youtube.service
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -b
For a live view of new log entries, run:
sudo journalctl -u ffmpeg-youtube.service -f
Look for errors about opening the input, permissions, authentication, connection or output. Avoid copying logs into public posts without checking that they do not expose secrets.

Confirm the broadcast in YouTube Studio
Open the live control room for the stream and check its preview, stream health and recent errors. A systemd status of active (running) confirms only that the process is alive; it does not confirm that viewers are receiving a healthy broadcast.
Common failure patterns
- The service fails immediately: inspect the journal for a bad executable path, invalid FFmpeg arguments, missing input file, or file permissions that prevent the
streamuser from reading the media or environment file. - It repeatedly restarts: identify and fix the persistent error shown in the journal—such as a revoked or incorrect key, unavailable input, or network problem—rather than relying on more restarts.
- FFmpeg is running but YouTube shows no healthy stream: check the key, ingest endpoint, network path and the platform’s stream health/errors. Process status is not platform confirmation.
- The stream stops after a platform-side event: systemd cannot undo a broadcast that YouTube has ended or rejected. Check the live control room and address the platform-reported issue before restarting or changing settings.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want to keep a YouTube channel live without maintaining an always-on computer at home, StreamNeo is a hosted alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded video from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Nothing has to stay on at home, and each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers. It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
