To keep a self-hosted YouTube stream running during a power cut, back up power for the entire local chain: the computer running FFmpeg, the modem or ONT, and the router or other network equipment needed to reach the internet. A UPS can keep those devices powered for its supported load and runtime; it cannot ensure your ISP’s network or YouTube’s ingest path stays available. Plan for power and internet continuity separately.
What has to stay online
The stream depends on an unbroken chain: power source → FFmpeg computer → modem or ONT → router → ISP path → YouTube ingest. YouTube receives live data from the encoder over the internet, so backing up only the computer—or only the router—can still leave the stream offline.
- FFmpeg host: the computer or server encoding and sending the stream.
- Network equipment: every modem, ONT, router, switch, or other device the host needs to reach the internet.
- Internet path: the ISP’s local and upstream network, which may have its own power or service interruption.
YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a server or ingestion URL and a stream key. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
Choose backup power from your actual load and required runtime
Measure what the UPS must support
List the devices that need to stay on and find their actual power draw under streaming conditions. Add the computer and all required network devices. Then decide how long the setup needs to survive a cut. UPS capacity and runtime depend on the supported load and battery; there is no single VA rating or runtime that suits every FFmpeg setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check runtime at that load
Compare a UPS’s supported load and stated runtime at a load close to yours, rather than choosing by its headline capacity alone. Confirm that its outlets can power all required devices, and that a power transfer will not interrupt the computer or network equipment. Manufacturer estimates are not a substitute for testing your own setup.
Keep network equipment on backup power too
Connect the modem or ONT and router, as well as the FFmpeg computer, to backed-up outlets. If the devices are powered but the ISP’s neighborhood equipment or upstream route is unavailable, YouTube still will not receive the stream.

Plan for internet outages separately
A UPS protects your local equipment from loss of mains power; it does not keep the ISP’s fiber, cable network, local exchange, or upstream route working. If internet continuity matters during outages, investigate a genuinely independent connection and test it. Two connections that rely on the same router, local infrastructure, or ISP path may not be independent. Do not assume failover works until you have tested what happens to the live stream when the primary path drops.
Set up and test the YouTube–FFmpeg connection
- Get the current stream details. In YouTube Studio, open the live stream setup and use its server or ingestion URL and stream key in your encoder configuration. Keep the key confidential.
- Use settings appropriate to your stream and connection. YouTube recommends RTMPS and CBR encoding, and recommends testing upload capacity: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” Select the bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current live encoder settings; the applicable ranges depend on video settings and codec.
- Set keyframes within YouTube’s guidance. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. Check the settings page for the current requirements for your encoder and format.
- Test representative content. Run a test with the motion and audio you expect to stream, using the same equipment and network path. Watch YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health messages and confirm that the encoder remains stable under the intended upload load.
Do not assume an internet speed test alone proves a stream is reliable. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing representative conditions. Its troubleshooting guidance also distinguishes encoder problems from outbound internet problems: check that the encoder is working, review CPU load, and test the outbound connection. See YouTube’s live stream troubleshooting steps.

Optional: use YouTube’s backup ingest address
YouTube’s Live API documents separate primary and backup ingestion addresses. A setup that sends to both can provide redundancy for the ingest destination, but it is optional and must be configured to transmit to both. It is not backup electrical power or backup internet, and it does not establish that an interrupted stream will resume automatically. See YouTube Live API stream documentation.
Make recovery after a power cut deliberate
If the UPS battery runs out or power otherwise fails, the FFmpeg host must regain power and the FFmpeg process must start again. Generic support for RTMP or RTMPS does not by itself guarantee that a process restarts after the computer loses power. FFmpeg documents RTMP protocol variants, including RTMPS, but recovery after a host shutdown depends on your operating system and configuration: FFmpeg protocol documentation.

A restart policy or an external process supervisor may be suitable, depending on your host. Configure and test it for your specific system; no generic command or policy guarantees recovery across every operating system, power event, or YouTube session. Verify that the host boots after power returns, the network reconnects, the FFmpeg process launches, and YouTube receives data again.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after encoder transmission stops. That is archive guidance, not a promise of seamless resumption or a guarantee that every stream duration will be archived. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Run a safe outage drill before relying on the setup
- Start the stream and confirm YouTube is receiving it and reporting healthy stream status.
- With appropriate supervision, safely remove mains input to the UPS. Do not disconnect equipment in a way that risks damage or injury.
- Check that the FFmpeg computer, modem or ONT, and router remain powered and that YouTube continues receiving data.
- Observe what happens when the expected backup duration is exceeded. Confirm whether the host shuts down, whether it boots when power returns, and whether the encoder process and stream recover as configured.
- If you rely on a second internet connection or backup ingest destination, test each separately and confirm what YouTube receives during a failure.
Troubleshoot the failure by layer
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The computer or router turns off during a cut | UPS load, runtime, outlet selection, or battery condition | Check the actual load and runtime requirement; ensure every required device is connected to a backed-up outlet. |
| Devices stay powered, but the stream drops | ISP path or outbound internet connection | Test whether the internet remains available independently of local power. YouTube identifies outbound connection problems as a possible cause even when the encoder appears healthy. |
| FFmpeg is running, but the stream is unhealthy | Encoder health, CPU load, bitrate, or connection strength | Check FFmpeg output and CPU load, review YouTube Live Control Room health messages, and test the upload path and bitrate. |
| RTMPS connection fails with an SSL error | Ingestion URL scheme or port | Google advises verifying that the server name uses “rtmps” and checking port 443 when there is an SSL error. See YouTube’s RTMPS connection guidance. |
| The stream does not return after the host restarts | FFmpeg process or startup configuration | Check whether the process is configured to launch after boot and test the recovery path for your operating system and stream setup. |
