How to Limit FFmpeg CPU Usage on a VPS While Streaming to YouTube

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by limiting the video encoder’s thread count, then test the exact stream workload. This can reduce FFmpeg’s parallel work, but it is not a fixed CPU-percentage cap: the effect depends on the encoder, FFmpeg build, filters, and other work the process performs. Lower the count gradually and confirm FFmpeg still encodes in real time while YouTube reports a healthy stream.

Find which encoder FFmpeg is using

Thread options and their behavior depend on the selected video encoder and the FFmpeg build installed on your VPS. Check the encoder’s local help before changing the command:

ffmpeg -h encoder=libx264

Replace libx264 with the encoder actually used by your command. FFmpeg’s encoder reference describes the threads option and multithreading modes, but local help is the practical check for the build and encoder you have installed.

Reduce encoder parallelism step by step

  1. Record a baseline. Run the stream with its current settings and note CPU load, whether encoding stays in real time, and whether delay grows. Also watch YouTube’s stream-health messages.
  2. Set a video-thread starting point. In common FFmpeg syntax, add an encoder-specific thread limit such as -threads:v 2 to the command. Use the syntax reported by the selected encoder’s help; option support and behavior vary.
  3. Repeat the same workload. Test with representative video, audio, motion, resolution, and frame rate. Keep the stream settings otherwise unchanged so you can tell whether the thread adjustment helped.
  4. Adjust gradually. If CPU remains too high and the stream is stable, try a lower thread count. If encoding falls behind, delay grows, or YouTube reports problems, restore the previous setting or reduce the encoding workload instead.

There is no universal number of threads that fits a VPS size or guarantees a particular CPU percentage. Thread limits reduce parallel work; they do not cap all CPU used by FFmpeg, its filters, or other process work.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Make sure the stream can keep up in real time

A live output must encode and deliver frames at the rate the stream requires. When reading a file as a live source, FFmpeg documents -re as reading input at its native frame rate; it can be useful for that use case. Do not add it reflexively to an input that is already live. FFmpeg also documents benchmark reporting for timing encoding work. See the FFmpeg command-line documentation for these options.

Judge a change against the real stream, not CPU usage alone. Compare CPU headroom for other VPS work, whether encoding stays at least real time without accumulating delay, picture quality at the chosen resolution and frame rate, and YouTube stream health plus upload stability.

If lowering threads is not enough

If FFmpeg cannot keep up after reducing parallelism, reduce the workload and retest. Each option involves a trade-off rather than a guaranteed fix:

  • Lower resolution or frame rate: fewer or smaller frames can ease encoding work, but change the output. Check that the result still meets your needs and YouTube’s current guidance.
  • Choose a less demanding encoder preset: a faster preset may ease CPU demand, but can change visual quality. Validate the resulting video rather than assuming quality is unchanged.
  • Copy the video stream instead of re-encoding: use stream copy only when the source is already encoded compatibly and no video transformation is needed. If you need to resize, change frame rate, or otherwise transform video, copying cannot perform that work.

Change one factor at a time, then check real-time performance, image quality, latency, and stream health. The best setting depends on the source and target stream; there is no universally best preset or resolution.

Keep YouTube’s stream settings compatible

CPU tuning should not come at the cost of a stream that YouTube cannot ingest reliably. YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video options, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, recommends CBR, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval—not exceeding four seconds. Check the current bitrate table there for your resolution and frame rate rather than relying on a number that may change.

Choose quality that your upload connection can sustain. Before going live, test with representative audio and motion; during the stream, monitor YouTube’s stream health and messages. A CPU reduction that causes encoding to fall behind or degrades the connection’s ability to deliver the stream is not a useful improvement.

Why FFmpeg may show 100% CPU—and what not to use as a limiter

A high CPU reading can reflect the cost of encoding at the selected quality, resolution, and frame rate, as well as filters and other FFmpeg work. A thread count can limit encoder parallelism, but it does not promise a fixed share of CPU. Measure the actual command and workload before deciding whether the change worked.

Do not use -cpucount as a production CPU cap. FFmpeg documents it as overriding the detected CPU count and says it is “intended for testing”; it is not documented as an operating-system CPU quota. For a hard ceiling or stronger isolation, use a resource-control feature provided by your operating system or VPS environment and follow that environment’s own documentation. FFmpeg’s documentation does not establish a provider-specific quota command.
