Then configure OBS using YouTube Live’s encoder guidance and test the complete scene before relying on it. A visualizer makes the stream react to music; it does not keep the computer, network, or broadcast running by itself.
What you need before adding a visualizer
- OBS Studio installed on a computer that meets the visualizer plugin’s operating-system and OBS-version requirements.
- A music playback source in OBS, plus any background image or animation for the scene.
- A YouTube Live stream key and an upload connection that can sustain your selected video bitrate.
- Permission to broadcast the music. A visualizer does not grant rights to use a track or catalog; confirm the applicable permissions before going live.
OBS sources provide video and/or audio to a scene, and plugins can add sources and other capabilities. The OBS documentation describes this plugin model at OBS Studio Plugins.
Choose an OBS visualizer source
Check the plugin’s supported operating systems and minimum OBS version against your own setup before installing. The listed requirements and update details below come from the OBS Forums resource pages; they are not independent compatibility tests or guarantees of reliable continuous operation.
| Option | Operating systems and minimum OBS version | Status and visual controls | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spectralizer | Windows and Linux; OBS Studio 24.0.0 or later. | The resource lists version 1.3.4 and a last update of January 28, 2021. It says the plugin is deprecated in favor of Waveform, which it says offers more options. | Its age and deprecated status are important compatibility caveats. Verify it on your exact OBS version before building a production scene around it. |
| Audio Waves Visualizer | Windows, macOS, and Linux; OBS Studio 32.0.2 or later. | The listing identifies version 3.0.5, created November 15, 2025. It adds an “Audio Shader Engine” source with 13 templates that listens to a chosen audio source. | The author warns that some themes are resource-heavy and recommends testing on a development setup before production. |
Choose based on OS and OBS compatibility, the visual style you want, plugin status, and resource demands. Plugin controls and labels can vary by version; consult the resource page for installation details and test the selected source in your own scene.

Add and configure the visualizer in OBS
- Build the scene. In OBS, create or select the scene for the music stream. Add the music playback source and then add the background artwork you want behind the visualization.
- Install a compatible plugin. Use the plugin’s instructions and confirm its operating-system and OBS-version requirements first. Restart OBS if the plugin’s instructions require it.
- Add the visualizer source. In the scene’s Sources list, add the plugin’s visualizer source. The exact source name and dialog depend on the plugin and version.
- Route the correct audio. In the visualizer’s properties, choose the source that actually carries the music. If the scene uses a different source or routing path than expected, the visualizer may appear but not react.
- Position and size it. Place the visualizer over the background and resize it in the OBS preview. Adjust any available template or appearance controls to suit the scene.
- Check the audio mix. Play the music and confirm that OBS’s audio meters move for the intended source. Listen for the audio in the test stream as well as watching the visual response.
Exact interface labels and available controls depend on the installed plugin and version. If a source does not appear, recheck compatibility and installation instructions rather than assuming every plugin uses the same OBS dialog.
Set OBS for YouTube Live
YouTube’s published encoder guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264, the current guidance accessed in 2026 lists these figures for 30 fps:

| Output | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps, H.264 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published settings, not a promise that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain them. Choose a bitrate your upload connection can reliably maintain, and consult YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the relevant codec, resolution, and frame-rate combination. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and lists AAC or MP3 for audio.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR) encoding.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use RTMPS where supported by your encoder setup.
- In OBS, select the YouTube service and configure the stream key using your YouTube Live setup. Treat the key as a secret; do not show it in a screen recording or share it publicly.
Encoder settings are separate from the visualizer. A scene can render correctly while an unsuitable bitrate, keyframe interval, or audio setup still causes problems in the YouTube broadcast.

Test the complete scene before relying on it
- Start with a private, unlisted, or otherwise appropriate test broadcast using the same scene, audio routing, and encoder settings planned for the stream.
- Play music with movement and audio similar to the intended broadcast. YouTube Help advises: “Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Check that the visualizer responds to the music, the stream carries audible audio, and the picture is composed as intended.
- Review YouTube’s stream health and OBS performance while the scene is active. Pay attention to dropped frames, rendering or encoding load, and unstable upload performance.
- Repeat the test after changing the plugin, scene, audio routing, resolution, or encoder settings. Those changes can alter compatibility or workload.
A successful test establishes that the tested setup worked for that test; it does not establish unattended 24/7 uptime. Continuous operation requires separate planning for machine uptime, power, network availability, monitoring, reconnect behavior, and recovery. The plugin listings and YouTube encoder guidance do not provide a complete continuity or failover procedure.
Troubleshooting common visualizer problems
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The plugin source is missing from OBS. | The plugin may not support the operating system or OBS version, or installation may not have completed as instructed. | Compare the installed OBS version and operating system with the resource requirements, follow the plugin’s installation directions, and restart OBS if required. |
| The visualizer is visible but does not move. | It may be listening to a source that is not carrying the music. | Open the visualizer’s properties, select the actual music source, play audio, and verify that the corresponding OBS audio meter moves. |
| The scene becomes choppy or performance worsens. | The visualizer theme, scene, and encoding load together may exceed what the computer can handle. The Audio Waves Visualizer author specifically warns that some themes are resource-heavy. | Test on the intended scene and encoder settings, try a less demanding theme if available, and check OBS performance indicators before a longer broadcast. |
| YouTube reports stream-health or connection problems. | The chosen bitrate may exceed stable upload capacity, or another encoder/network setting may be unsuitable. | Check YouTube’s stream-health information, confirm the codec and settings against YouTube’s guidance, and use a bitrate the connection can sustain reliably. |
| The stream stops when the computer or internet connection fails. | An OBS-based stream depends on the computer and its connection remaining available; a visualizer plugin does not provide independent hosting or automatic failover. | Plan power, network, monitoring, and recovery separately, or use a cloud service designed to keep an uploaded-video stream running. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For an uploaded-video stream, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. The video streams as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos rather than going live from a camera, and streams to YouTube only. See StreamNeo or its plans. To try the free first day, create a StreamNeo account.
