How Much CPU and RAM Does FFmpeg Need for a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no official, universal CPU-core or RAM minimum for running FFmpeg to YouTube 24/7. The requirement depends on what FFmpeg must do: pass through or encode video, the source and output resolution and frame rate, encoder and preset, filters, simultaneous streams, and whether compatible hardware acceleration is used. Size the machine by testing the complete production command: it must sustain real-time encoding, with enough measured capacity for other processes and workload peaks.

Why there is no single CPU or RAM number

YouTube’s live-stream requirements describe the video and audio sent to its ingest service; they are not minimum sender-computer specifications. The official guidance reviewed does not specify a minimum CPU model, core count, clock speed, or RAM amount for a 24/7 FFmpeg stream.

Two streams at the same output resolution can put very different loads on a computer. Copying a compatible compressed video stream is not the same workload as decoding, scaling, filtering, and software-encoding it. Encoder choice, preset, frame rate, audio processing, and the number of concurrent outputs also matter. A hardware encoder may reduce CPU work, but whether it works well depends on the device, driver, FFmpeg build, encoder, and filters.

  • CPU: There is no defensible universal core or clock-speed recommendation. Measure the chosen encoder and settings doing the real job.
  • RAM: The reviewed official sources establish no minimum memory figure for one stream. Measure the FFmpeg process and the whole system during the intended workload.
  • Runtime: A 24/7 schedule does not itself imply a particular CPU or RAM amount. Long-run stability also depends on process supervision, available input, network and output stability, and recovery behavior.

Do not buy a mini PC or choose a CPU based on its name alone. A category or model cannot guarantee that a specific FFmpeg pipeline will meet your target.

What the stream settings change

YouTube’s current live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its recommended ingest bitrate varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Those bitrate figures are upload requirements, not estimates of CPU load.

H.264 output YouTube minimum ingest bitrate YouTube recommended ingest bitrate
720p, 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p, 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p, 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p, 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps
2160p (4K), 30 fps 11 Mbps 42 Mbps
2160p (4K), 60 fps 14 Mbps 50 Mbps

These are YouTube Help’s published H.264 ingest figures; the page does not state a publication year, and the figures were checked on October 3, 2026. Codec-specific recommendations differ: for 1080p30, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 14 Mbps for H.264; for 1080p60, it lists 12 Mbps for AV1 or H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. Check YouTube’s current table for the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate before configuring a stream.

Higher resolution and frame rate can increase encoding work, but there is no conversion from an ingest bitrate to a CPU or RAM requirement. Filters, scaling, codec implementation, and encoder settings are also part of the workload. Use RTMPS where supported for encrypted transport, and test before relying on the broadcast.

How to size your machine for the actual FFmpeg stream

  1. Write down the production workload. Record the source format and resolution, target resolution and frame rate, output codec, software or hardware encoder, preset, scaling and other filters, audio processing, and number of simultaneous streams. Include planned playlist transitions or scheduled source changes.
  2. Use the intended command and input. Test the same FFmpeg build, command, representative content, and output settings you plan to use in production. A simple scene is not representative if the real stream uses heavier filters or more complex content. If you loop files, test the loop transition too.
  3. Check real-time speed. Watch FFmpeg’s reported encoding speed. For live encoding, at least 1x is a useful functional threshold: below real time, encoding cannot keep pace with the input and interruptions can result. Google’s official VP9 live-encoding guidance states this criterion specifically for live VP9 encoding; do not treat it as a hardware benchmark for every codec or workflow.
  4. Measure CPU and memory on the host. Monitor the FFmpeg process and overall system with your operating system’s tools throughout the test. Look for sustained CPU saturation, memory growth, swapping, and competition from other processes. FFmpeg’s -benchmark reports real, system, and user time at the end of an encode. It can report maximum memory on supported systems, but that reporting is not available everywhere and may show zero when unavailable; it is not a substitute for live operating-system monitoring.
  5. Test long enough to expose operational problems. Keep the stream running with representative content and source changes. Watch the FFmpeg log for errors, dropped frames, and reconnects; check host resource use over time; and check YouTube’s stream health. A short successful start does not establish that a configuration will behave reliably around the clock.
  6. Leave headroom based on measurements. Account for other processes and observed peaks instead of applying an unsupported universal percentage. The reviewed guidance does not prescribe a fixed headroom percentage.

How to reduce load when the test falls behind

If the measured pipeline cannot sustain real time, change one workload factor at a time and repeat the same test. This helps identify the bottleneck instead of assuming that adding RAM or buying a processor with more cores will fix it.

  • Reduce output resolution or frame rate if those are flexible.
  • Reduce encoding complexity by changing encoder or preset, then check the visual result and real-time speed again.
  • Remove or simplify expensive filters and scaling where possible.
  • Try a hardware-encoding path only after verifying support for the device, driver, FFmpeg build, encoder, and filters in the actual command. Hardware acceleration is not a guarantee of meeting a target.
  • For FFmpeg’s documented QSV accelerated transcoding path, both decoder and encoder must support QSV. The documented path avoids copying frames into system memory, but it does not prove that a particular device can sustain your workload.
  • If you run several outputs or other demanding processes, benchmark them together; testing one stream alone will not show their combined load.

CPU and RAM are only part of 24/7 reliability

A system can have enough compute and still fail as a continuous stream because the input disappears, the network becomes unstable, the process exits, or the YouTube connection drops. Plan how the process is supervised and restarted, how source files remain available, and how you will notice a failed stream. YouTube recommends testing before starting and monitoring stream health while broadcasting; its ingest guidance does not promise that a particular machine or FFmpeg command will run indefinitely.

Keep the upload connection in view separately from CPU sizing. For example, YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; the recommended bitrate is an ingest/network target, not a CPU specification. Use the applicable current figure for your chosen codec and settings.

Useful checks before you commit to a setup

  • Use the upload-time calculator to estimate how long sending your files may take.
  • Use the cloud vs PC cost calculator to compare costs for your circumstances.
  • Review the copyright safety checklist before using music or other material in a continuous stream. Having permission to upload a work and meeting YouTube’s policies are essential considerations; a stream setup does not itself establish rights.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does adding RAM make FFmpeg encode faster?

Not necessarily. Memory needs depend on the workload, and the reviewed official guidance does not quantify a universal requirement. Measure memory use and encoding speed under your actual settings before upgrading.

Can I use a mini PC for a 24/7 YouTube stream?

Possibly, but the label “mini PC” is not enough to determine suitability. Test the specific device, FFmpeg build, command, and full workload for sustained real-time speed and stable operation.

Does FFmpeg’s benchmark option continuously monitor memory?

No. The documented benchmark reports timing at the end of an encode; maximum-memory reporting is platform-dependent. Use operating-system monitoring during a live test.
