The biggest data-saving control is OBS’s outgoing stream bitrate: lowering it reduces the amount your connection sends, but can reduce picture quality. If that is not enough, test a lower output resolution or frame rate that still works for your content. Estimate the resulting daily usage with GB per 24 hours ≈ total outgoing Mbps × 10.8, then compare it with your own internet plan’s usage meter and terms; there is no single India-wide data quota or cost to assume.
1. Measure your upload connection and choose a sustainable starting point
Run an upload speed test under conditions similar to your planned stream. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate, and OBS advises choosing a bitrate your connection can sustain. Leave headroom for normal variation instead of setting OBS to consume the full measured upload speed. Test with audio and motion similar to the real scene, because a speed test alone does not show how the stream will behave over time. YouTube’s live encoder settings and the OBS connection troubleshooting guide provide further guidance.
2. Lower OBS bitrate, then adjust resolution or frame rate if needed
Change the video bitrate
- In OBS Studio, open Settings → Output. If Output Mode is set to Simple, adjust the video bitrate there; in Advanced mode, select the streaming output and change Video Bitrate.
- Lower the bitrate in measured steps, keeping a note of each setting. Check OBS stream health and the actual picture during a representative test before leaving the stream unattended.
- Keep audio bitrate in the total-data estimate. YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio in its live encoder guidance.
Lower video bitrate generally means less outgoing data, but it does not guarantee the same-looking image. The result depends on the scene, codec, resolution, motion, and viewers’ playback conditions. Static artwork or an information display may tolerate a lower rate than fast movement or fine detail.
Use a resolution and frame rate that fit the content
In OBS, Settings → Video contains the output (scaled) resolution and frame-rate controls. Reducing either can make a lower bitrate more practical, but test the actual content: fine text and detailed artwork may become hard to see at lower resolution, while fast motion can suffer at a lower frame rate.

YouTube’s live ingestion recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate. The following are platform recommendations, not guarantees of adequate image quality at every bitrate. Apply the figures for the codec OBS actually sends, and check YouTube’s page again before publishing because its guidance may change.
| Live output | H.264 guidance | AV1/H.265 guidance |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 or 60 fps | 3–8 Mbps recommended range | 6 Mbps recommended; 2 Mbps minimum listed |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5–14 Mbps recommended range | 10 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum listed |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6–17 Mbps recommended range | 12 Mbps recommended; 4 Mbps minimum listed |
YouTube specifies constant bitrate (CBR) and recommends a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. These are live-stream encoder settings, not recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos. See YouTube’s current encoder settings page for full details.

3. Estimate how much data the stream will use
For decimal gigabytes, use this approximate calculation:
GB per 24 hours ≈ total outgoing Mbps × 10.8
This follows from converting megabits per second over 86,400 seconds into decimal gigabytes. It is arithmetic based on the bitrate, not a statistic from YouTube or an Indian internet provider.

| Total outgoing bitrate | Approximate data per 24 hours |
|---|---|
| 1 Mbps | 10.8 GB |
| 2 Mbps | 21.6 GB |
| 3 Mbps | 32.4 GB |
| 6 Mbps | 64.8 GB |
| 8 Mbps | 86.4 GB |
These examples assume the stated bitrate represents the whole stream. If it is video-only, add audio; 128 Kbps stereo audio adds about 1.38 GB per day by the same calculation. Actual metered use can also differ because of protocol overhead, changing output, reconnects, and other devices using the same connection. Providers may meter or display data differently, including decimal GB versus GiB, so compare the estimate with your own provider’s current usage meter and plan terms. India’s plans vary by provider, technology, location, and conditions; mobile tethering and cellular routers can be particularly quota-sensitive, but there is no universal plan price, quota, or fair-use limit to apply here.
4. Use dynamic bitrate only as a response to congestion
OBS offers Dynamically change bitrate to manage congestion. When enabled, it can lower bitrate if the network cannot keep up, which may reduce dropped frames but also lowers video quality. It does not repair an unreliable connection or reduce usage to a predictable fixed amount. Prefer a sustainable baseline bitrate and diagnose persistent upload instability; use the dynamic option as a fallback, not as the primary data-saving plan. OBS explains the trade-off.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
5. Troubleshoot dropped frames, buffering, and unexpected usage
- Dropped frames or unstable stream: Reduce video bitrate and test again. Check whether the upload connection remains stable over time; OBS recommends wired Ethernet when Wi-Fi is unreliable. Ethernet improves connection reliability in suitable setups but does not itself lower bitrate or data use. See OBS’s buffering troubleshooting guide.
- Image becomes blocky or text is hard to read: Raise bitrate, resolution, or frame rate as the scene requires, within the upload capacity and the applicable YouTube codec guidance. Change one setting at a time and inspect the real stream.
- Measured plan usage is higher than the estimate: Confirm whether your bitrate figure includes audio, allow for overhead and reconnects, and check for other traffic on the same router or cellular plan. Compare the provider’s meter over a known interval rather than relying only on the formula.
- Viewers report buffering: Their playback network and YouTube’s delivery choices can matter as well as your upload. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions; that helps viewers choose playback, but does not reduce the source bitrate OBS sends. See YouTube’s live encoder guidance and its transcoding explanation.
