You can run a prerecorded YouTube Live stream from a VPS with FFmpeg: create a live broadcast in YouTube Studio, use the current ingest URL and stream key, then send the video from the server in real time. The VPS removes the need to leave a home computer running, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted uptime; you still need to monitor the process and connection.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A VPS with FFmpeg installed, enough disk space for the media, and outbound bandwidth that can sustain your chosen video bitrate.
- Video files you have the rights and permission to stream.
- Access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room to create or schedule the broadcast and retrieve its current stream URL and key.
Set up the YouTube broadcast
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to open the Live Control Room. Create a new stream or schedule one, following the current on-screen options.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that broadcast. Use the values displayed in Studio rather than an ingest address from an old tutorial; the current URL can depend on the channel’s settings.
- Keep the stream key private. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public screenshots, logs, or shared shell history. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before using it again.
Prepare FFmpeg on the VPS
FFmpeg’s protocol documentation demonstrates the basic real-time file-to-RTMP pattern as ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystream (FFmpeg Protocols Documentation). The -re option paces file input in real time instead of sending it as fast as the server can read it. The example shows the mechanics, not a complete YouTube production command.
For a YouTube stream, adapt the input, output format, codecs, bitrate, frame rate, protocol, and ingest address to the media and the settings currently shown in YouTube Studio. YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS video codecs H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1, up to 60 fps; available options also depend on your FFmpeg build. Do not assume one command line works for every codec, file, or FFmpeg package.
Choose the protocol and encoder settings
- Prefer RTMPS when supported. YouTube recommends it as a secure extension to RTMP (YouTube encoder settings). Google’s RTMPS guidance requires an
rtmpsURL using a valid YouTube endpoint and port 443, and describes hostname/SNI requirements for authentication (Google RTMPS ingestion guide). Use the URL provided by the current Live Control Room or API response; do not guess or reuse an endpoint without checking it. - Use a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Use CBR. YouTube lists constant bitrate as the bitrate encoding mode in its encoder settings guidance.
- Match the bitrate to resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s H.264 recommendations include 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps, 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps, and 8 Mbps for 720p at either 30 or 60 fps. These are YouTube’s recommended encoder settings, not a measured VPS network requirement.
- Allow network headroom. As a practical operating measure, provision outbound capacity above the video’s target bitrate and account for other traffic on the VPS; the YouTube bitrate table does not specify a universal headroom figure.
Start the stream and check it
- Start FFmpeg on the VPS with the prepared file and the broadcast’s current YouTube ingest details. Keep the actual key out of commands or logs that other people can access.
- Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before and after starting the public broadcast. Confirm that the incoming video and audio are present and that the selected settings match the broadcast.
- Monitor the FFmpeg process, VPS resource use, available disk space, and outbound connection while the stream runs. A process supervisor, logs, and a restart plan can help you recover from a stopped process, but neither those measures nor YouTube’s encoder guidance guarantee uninterrupted uptime.
Looping files and planning long broadcasts
The basic FFmpeg example sends one input file. For continuous prerecorded playout, arrange the files into a playlist or another repeatable input workflow supported by your FFmpeg setup, and verify transitions and audio before relying on it unattended. The cited FFmpeg example does not prescribe a universal playlist command, so test the exact files and build you intend to use.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Separate stream uptime from archive behavior. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that guidance does not establish that a longer continuous broadcast will produce a complete archive. If retaining the full broadcast matters, consider dividing it into shorter scheduled streams and verify the resulting archives in your channel.
Copyright, reused content, and monetization
Technical ability to send a file to YouTube is not permission to rebroadcast it. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and consider rights in music, footage, images, and other included material. YouTube’s encoder documentation explains setup, not blanket approval for continuous rebroadcast, copyright clearance, reused-content eligibility, or monetization of a particular stream. YouTube says monetization is available if a channel is in the YouTube Partner Program, but that alone does not establish that a specific stream or video qualifies.

VPS/FFmpeg or dedicated hardware?
With the VPS approach, FFmpeg encodes and sends the stream from a server you administer. It avoids keeping a local streaming computer on, but you are responsible for the server, network path, monitoring, and recovery plan. YouTube also documents the AJA HELO Plus as a dedicated hardware option whose PlayToStream feature can schedule prerecorded media and stream directly to YouTube Live without a computer (YouTube’s encoder setup page). It is an alternative for readers who prefer a device-based workflow, not a requirement for VPS streaming.
