Recommended Free Tools
For a prerecorded video or playlist on a computer you can leave running, OBS Studio is the best starting point. It is a free, verified YouTube encoder: use its Media Source to loop one file, or its VLC Video source to repeat a playlist. If the stream needs to keep running while your computer is off, use a cloud service instead; StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud and is the #1 option for that need, with any quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot and a free first day.
Which software should you use?
| Option | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | A YouTube stream that should continue without keeping a computer powered on | Cloud-hosted playback of uploaded videos, with 24/7 looping and playlists. Any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, at one flat price per slot; the first day is free. |
| OBS Studio | Playing a local video or playlist from a computer you control | Free, open-source, and listed by YouTube among its verified software encoders. The computer and internet connection must remain available for the stream to continue. |
| AJA HELO Plus | A dedicated hardware workflow for scheduled prerecorded media without a computer | YouTube describes it as supporting scheduled prerecorded media to YouTube Live. The sources cited here do not establish its price or a like-for-like comparison with the other options. |
For most creators who want to play files stored locally, choose OBS Studio. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video into a digital format for streaming. OBS is a verified software option available at no charge. YouTube’s encoder setup guide lists verified options; OBS’s Media Sources guide explains its playback sources.
Choose cloud playback when a local machine being powered on and connected is the problem, not when you need a live camera feed: StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only. The AJA HELO Plus is a hardware alternative if you prefer a dedicated device. There is no established like-for-like pricing here to show that one approach is cheapest overall.
Set up OBS to loop a video or playlist
Before opening OBS, make sure live streaming is enabled for your YouTube channel. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so complete it ahead of a planned broadcast. Have the video files ready on the computer that will run OBS.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast. Keep the key private: anyone who has it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Select YouTube if the available connection flow suits your setup, or choose a custom server and enter YouTube’s stream URL and key. Labels and sign-in options can vary by OBS version; use the URL and key supplied for the stream you created.
- Make a scene. In OBS, add a scene, then add the playback source described below. Confirm the video fits the canvas and that its audio is present in the OBS mixer.
- Start the encoder and check the broadcast. Select Start Streaming in OBS. Watch the Live Control Room for the incoming signal and use its controls to start or manage the scheduled broadcast. For a scheduled stream, connecting the encoder is not by itself the entire start process: complete the Live Control Room step as well.
Loop one video file
- In the OBS scene’s Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source.
- Name the source if useful, then enable Loop and browse to the local video file.
- Confirm the source is visible in the preview. If playback does not begin as expected, check that the source is active in the scene and that the selected file is accessible.
A Media Source is the straightforward choice when one file should repeat. If you replace or move the local file, update the source path in OBS.
Loop a playlist in order
- Install VLC on the same computer as OBS, then add a VLC Video source from the OBS Sources panel.
- Add the files to the source’s media list in the order you want them to play.
- Leave Loop Playlist enabled to repeat the list. Shuffle Playlist is a separate setting and is off by default; enable it only if you want a different order.
- Check the preview and audio before going live. With 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC for the VLC source.
Settings and operational details that matter
Use the stream URL and key for the right broadcast
Use the server URL and stream key displayed in YouTube Studio for the stream you created or scheduled. Treat the key like a password; do not publish it or include it in a screen recording. If you need to change it, update the encoder connection too.

Do not assume the stream will start just because OBS connects
For scheduled streams, YouTube’s guidance calls for both an encoder connection and the Live Control Room step to start the broadcast. Confirm the stream is actually live in the control room rather than relying only on OBS’s streaming status.
Keep a local copy if the archive matters
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all, so keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy of a long broadcast. YouTube’s archive guidance explains the limitation.

Copyright and monetization are separate from playback
Check rights to both picture and sound
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content matches. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream, interrupt it, or terminate it. You need the rights required to use the live content, including applicable music rights. If you have licensed third-party content, YouTube says the rights owner should add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; otherwise, a live stream may still be interrupted. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
A working loop is not a monetization guarantee
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. Monetized content is expected to be original and authentic; repetitive, mass-produced, generic, or low-value content can be ineligible. Making prerecorded material technically live does not itself make it eligible for monetization. Review YouTube’s channel monetization policies and assess the content itself, not just the streaming setup.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube is not receiving a signal: Check that OBS is streaming, the correct server URL and stream key are entered, and the computer has an internet connection. If the channel has not streamed before, activation may still be pending for up to 24 hours.
- The scheduled stream is connected but not live: Open the Live Control Room and complete the start step for the scheduled broadcast.
- A playlist source is missing or fails to play: Confirm VLC is installed. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC, then reopen or reconfigure the VLC Video source.
- The playlist does not repeat or plays in an unexpected order: Check Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist separately. Looping repeats the list; shuffle changes its order.
- The stream is replaced, interrupted, or terminated: Review YouTube’s copyright notice and resolve any rights or Content ID allowlist issue with the rights owner.
- The YouTube archive is missing after a long broadcast: A stream over 12 hours may not be captured. Retain a local recording when the archive is important.
Or let it run in the cloud

It supports any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. One slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and StreamNeo team support. The same product is included on every plan; only the billing length changes. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free first day.
