To keep a study-with-me YouTube stream running from a spare PC, use the PC as an always-on OBS encoder: create a YouTube Live broadcast, connect OBS with the stream URL and key, prevent Windows from sleeping, and test the full workflow before leaving it unattended. The computer, internet connection, and encoder must stay available for the stream to continue. YouTube’s automatic archive applies to streams under 12 hours, so plan separately if you need a longer continuous recording.
What needs to stay running
OBS on the spare PC sends the live video to YouTube. If the PC shuts down, sleeps, loses its connection, or OBS stops sending, the encoder feed can stop. A spare machine is useful only if it can sustain the workload and remain awake and online for the length of the session.
- The PC: powered on and awake, with OBS running.
- The network: stable upload capacity for the stream bitrate, with room for variation and other devices.
- YouTube Live: a scheduled or otherwise created encoder broadcast, connected to OBS with its stream URL and key.
There is no universal OBS resolution, frame rate, or bitrate for an unspecified spare PC. The right settings depend on its processor or graphics encoder, scene complexity, and available upload bandwidth.
Set up OBS and YouTube Live
1. Check the spare PC and let OBS suggest a starting point
OBS lists Windows 10 or Windows 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU among its Windows requirements. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee that a machine can stream a particular workload. Resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, and scene complexity all affect performance; OBS notes that 60 fps can be much more demanding than 30 fps.

Install OBS Studio from OBS Project, then use its Auto-Configuration Wizard as a starting point suited to the hardware and network. Test the result rather than assuming a minimum-spec PC will sustain it. If the preview stutters or the machine struggles, reduce the output resolution or frame rate, simplify the scene, or use a hardware encoder if the PC offers one.
2. Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Studio
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for OBS to send the feed to your channel. The key is a credential: do not publish it, show it in a recording, or share it with someone who should not be able to send video to the stream. Reset it if it is exposed.

Decide whether to use YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop options. With auto-start enabled, sending from the encoder can make a scheduled broadcast go live; in a manual workflow, you may still need to select Go Live in Live Control Room. Check the current settings in Studio and test the exact sequence you plan to use.
3. Configure OBS and check the outgoing feed
In OBS, add the camera or other video source needed for the study scene, arrange the scene, and confirm that any music or microphone audio is intentional and audible at an appropriate level. Open the stream settings and enter YouTube’s stream URL and key, or connect through the available YouTube account integration if that is the workflow you choose. Keep the key private regardless of connection method.

Choose a resolution, frame rate, and encoder the spare PC can handle. Set the video bitrate to fit the upload connection, then check YouTube’s encoder guidance for current recommendations that suit the selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube says total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom above the total bitrate. Shared Wi-Fi or other household traffic can reduce the upload capacity actually available to OBS.
Start with a short private or unlisted test. Verify the preview in YouTube Studio, check that the correct scene and audio appear, and confirm the broadcast is actually live using the intended auto-start or manual process. For a low-friction session, configure a scene that does not depend on a person repeatedly changing sources or responding to prompts.

Keep Windows awake and the connection stable
Prevent automatic sleep
Windows can make an application system-required request to prevent automatic sleep during active work, but do not rely on that alone without checking the PC’s power plan. Review the active plan’s sleep behavior and make sure the PC will not sleep during the intended session. Menu names and available controls vary by Windows version, hardware, and organization policy.
Keep the PC connected to power and use a reliable network connection. If you use Wi-Fi, check signal stability where the PC will sit; a wired connection may avoid some wireless interruptions if the machine and router support it. Do not set an aggressive power-saving mode that suspends the network adapter or otherwise interrupts OBS.

Test unattended recovery
OBS provides automatic reconnect settings, and it can be launched with the --startstreaming parameter. These can reduce manual recovery work, but neither guarantees that Windows will log in after a restart, the network will be ready, or YouTube will accept the feed. Test a brief disconnection and restart scenario while you can monitor it, and verify in Live Control Room that the broadcast recovers as expected.
Plan for long study sessions and archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single continuous stream longer than 12 hours will produce one automatic archive. If a session must exceed that boundary, decide in advance how to end and restart broadcasts and how you will preserve any recording you need. A scheduled broadcast and tested auto-start workflow can reduce manual steps, but the selected Studio settings determine what happens.
Troubleshoot common interruptions
