You do not need a dedicated streaming PC or paid encoder. But “free” software does not remove the costs of electricity, internet, computer uptime, or music rights—and a 24/7 stream needs active monitoring and recovery planning.
For a no-purchase setup, create a YouTube live event, connect OBS with YouTube’s stream URL and stream key, and test a simple visual and audio feed before going public. Use music only when its rights cover livestream use, the intended territories, and—if you plan to earn from the stream—commercial use. In India, the same YouTube copyright rules apply; being based there does not make unlicensed music safe.
What you need for a free 24/7 stream
- A computer you already have that can remain on, with a stable internet connection and enough upload capacity for the chosen stream settings.
- OBS Studio, an open-source encoder available at no charge. YouTube’s encoder instructions explain how to connect an encoder using the stream URL and key.
- A simple visual, such as artwork you made or have permission to use. A static image or looping visual is enough for a basic music stream.
- Music cleared for livestreaming, such as your own work, music for which you have explicit permission, or eligible tracks from YouTube Audio Library used according to their listed terms.
YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started. That makes an existing computer and free encoder a sensible first setup; buying hardware or paid encoding is not a prerequisite.
Check channel access before setting up
YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. YouTube also says a channel must be at least 16 years old to livestream. First-time access can take time: YouTube for Artists recommends enabling live streams at least 24 hours before going live.

- Open YouTube Studio and check that the channel is verified and eligible to livestream.
- If you have never streamed before, enable live streaming and wait for access to become available before your planned start.
- Create a test event first. Use private or unlisted visibility while you check the audio, visual, and encoder connection.
Choose music that is actually cleared for a livestream
A track described online as “free” is not automatically copyright-safe. YouTube says safe music is public-domain music or music used with permission. YouTube Audio Library is its recommended source for royalty-free music and sound effects, and YouTube says its catalog is copyright-safe; check each track’s attribution and usage instructions in Studio before using it.
Use only rights that match your intended use
For music made by someone else, confirm that permission covers a YouTube livestream—not just personal listening or use in an edited video. Check whether the permission covers your territories and commercial use if you intend to monetize. Ask the rights holder whether they need to allowlist your channel so YouTube’s copyright system does not interrupt an otherwise licensed stream.

Do not treat streaming subscriptions or Creator Music as clearance
Do not rebroadcast songs from YouTube Music, Spotify, radio, or another creator as a shortcut. The reviewed YouTube guidance does not establish that this is permitted, and YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. Creator Music is not a livestream music source: its licensing and revenue-sharing tracks are for long-form videos, not live streams. YouTube’s cited help page describes Creator Music as available to U.S. YPP creators, with expansion to creators outside the U.S. pending; it is not an India option under that stated availability.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- Create the live event in YouTube Studio. Open the live control room, set the title and visibility, and choose the event settings you need. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event.
- Open OBS and enter YouTube’s connection details. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and use the stream key or server details supplied by YouTube. Labels can vary by OBS version; use the values shown in Studio rather than a key from an old event.
- Add your visual and audio sources. Use a permitted image or looping visual, then add your music source. Make sure the music is audible without clipping and that no unintended desktop audio is being sent.
- Start a private or unlisted test. Start streaming from OBS and confirm that Studio receives the feed. Listen from another device, check the image and audio, and watch for warnings in the live control room.
- Go public only after the test is clean. Keep OBS running and monitor its connection status and YouTube’s live preview. Keep the stream key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send a feed to your channel.
YouTube recommends testing encoder setup and leaving headroom in upload bandwidth. There is no single bitrate that fits every connection and resolution: choose settings your sustained upload can support, test them before launch, and reduce the load if the feed drops frames or disconnects.

Plan for 24/7 operation and the 12-hour archive limit
A computer-based stream stays live only while the computer, OBS, power, and internet connection keep working. Check the machine’s sleep and restart settings, prevent accidental shutdowns, and monitor the connection. A power or internet interruption can end the stream even if OBS is configured correctly.
YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours. Its help page warns: “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” If you need an archive, make a local recording and plan a controlled restart before the stream reaches 12 hours. A restart will interrupt the audience’s playback, and it does not guarantee the stream reconnects successfully; monitor the return to live.

Understand copyright interruptions and monetization
YouTube states: “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” If its system identifies third-party material, it may show a warning and placeholder; unresolved use can interrupt or terminate the stream. A license does not necessarily prevent automated action, so clarify allowlisting with the rights holder where needed.
Monetization is conditional, not automatic. Full YouTube Partner Program eligibility includes 1,000 subscribers and either 4,000 qualified public watch hours over 12 months or 10 million qualified Shorts views over 90 days, plus other account and policy requirements. YouTube reviews channels against its policies; copyright claims and non-original or reused content can also limit earning. YouTube’s guidance allows monetization of Audio Library music under its terms, while a third-party license must expressly permit commercial use if you plan to monetize.

Common problems and what to check
- Live streaming is unavailable: Check channel verification, the 90-day restriction requirement, channel age eligibility, and whether first-time activation has completed.
- OBS does not connect: Confirm that the event is live in Studio, the stream URL and key match that event, and the key has not been changed. Keep the key private.
- The stream drops or buffers: Check the computer’s connection and sustained upload capacity, leave bandwidth headroom, and test lower encoder demands if stability remains poor. Monitor both OBS and the YouTube live control room.
- YouTube shows a copyright warning or placeholder: Stop the disputed material, check the rights and territory terms, and contact the rights holder about channel allowlisting. Do not assume that a “free” label or a license for edited videos covers livestreams.
- The stream is live but no archive appears: YouTube may not capture streams that exceed 12 hours. Use a local recording and schedule restarts before that threshold if an archive matters.
- The stream does not resume after a restart: Recheck OBS’s connection, Studio’s event status, and the stream key, then reconnect and verify the feed. A planned restart is not a guarantee of automatic recovery.
When the free setup is the right choice
Use the computer-and-OBS approach if you already have suitable hardware, can keep it powered and connected, and are willing to monitor it and handle restarts. The main trade-off is operating responsibility: there is no encoder fee, but continuous power, internet, machine uptime, music permissions, and archive management still matter.
