Best Way to Run an Always-On YouTube Stream on a Low-End PC in India

Yes, but only if the PC, upload connection, and recovery plan can sustain the stream. Start with a simple OBS scene and test H.264 at 720p30 using constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. If the computer drops frames or struggles to encode, try 480p30 or simplify the scene. YouTube’s bitrate figures are ingest recommendations, not guarantees that an older PC can handle the workload.

For Indian creators asking, “Can I run a 24/7 YouTube live stream on an old PC?”, the key is a long test from the exact computer and location you plan to use. A stream that works for a short rehearsal may still fail during an overnight run, internet interruption, or power cut.

Start with a configuration the PC can sustain

Use a modest target and judge it by a representative test, not by whether OBS installs or opens. OBS notes that meeting its basic system requirements does not guarantee a computer can stream or record; workload varies with encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements.

720p30 is a reasonable first trial

YouTube’s current H.264 guidance lists 3 Mbps as the minimum and 8 Mbps as the recommended bitrate for 720p at 30 frames per second. YouTube also recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. These are YouTube ingest recommendations, not proof that a low-end CPU can encode the stream smoothly. Check the official live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Step down to 480p30 if the PC struggles

For H.264 at 480p30, YouTube lists 0.4 Mbps minimum and 4 Mbps recommended. Lower resolution can reduce encoding work, but a simple scene and a stable connection still matter. Use the lowest setting that gives viewers an acceptable picture and remains stable in a long test; do not assume a listed bitrate is a universal target for every connection.

Set up OBS and test the complete stream

  1. Confirm YouTube live access. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before a planned launch. Follow YouTube’s encoder live-stream help.
  2. Run OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard. Then build a lightweight scene containing only the sources you need. Disable unnecessary capture sources and avoid adding animated or otherwise demanding elements until the basic stream is stable.
  3. Choose an encoder and output target. Begin at H.264, 720p30, CBR, and a two-second keyframe interval. If your available hardware encoder is supported and works reliably, test it against software encoding; there is no universal winner for every older PC. OBS warns that actual capacity depends on the chosen encoder and workload.
  4. Measure upload at the streaming location. Test the PC’s outbound connection at the time of day it will stream. YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth spare and notes that other people or devices may share the connection. A download-speed result does not establish usable upload capacity. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
  5. Rehearse privately or unlisted. Use the same video or capture source, audio, scene, resolution, and bitrate planned for the live stream. Check the Live Control Room preview and monitor stream health while the rehearsal runs; YouTube recommends testing and ongoing monitoring.
  6. Run a long-duration trial before calling it 24/7. Deliberately check what happens after an encoder restart, PC restart, internet interruption, and power interruption. No universal unattended restart method is established for these cases, so describe only the recovery behavior you have actually tested.
  7. Plan for an archive separately. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Its cited guidance does not promise an archive for longer streams. If retaining a full long-running program matters, enable a separate local recording, confirm the disk has enough capacity, and verify that the file is being written.

Make the connection and scene less fragile

  • Prefer a stable link. If Wi-Fi varies or drops, try connecting the PC to the router by Ethernet and repeat the stream test. A cable may improve the local connection, but it cannot prevent ISP outages or power cuts.
  • Leave headroom. Keep YouTube’s recommended 20% bandwidth margin available for the stream, and account for household devices using the same connection.
  • Keep the scene simple. Fewer active sources mean fewer things to troubleshoot and can reduce the load on an older machine.
  • Monitor before leaving it unattended. Check dropped frames and stream health during both short rehearsals and the long-duration trial. A successful short test is not evidence of continuous recovery.

Common problems and what to check

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
Dropped frames or unstable stream health Upload variation, shared bandwidth, or Wi-Fi instability Repeat an upload test at the streaming location; reduce competing network use, test Ethernet if Wi-Fi is unstable, and rehearse again.
PC struggles or output becomes unreliable Encoder workload, resolution, frame rate, or scene complexity Remove unnecessary sources and test 480p30. Compare available encoder options using the same representative scene.
Stream fails after a restart or interruption Recovery behavior has not been confirmed for that failure Test encoder, PC, internet, and power interruptions separately. Do not assume the stream will restart unattended unless the exact setup has demonstrated it.
Full program is missing from the archive Stream exceeded YouTube’s stated under-12-hour automatic archive rule Use and verify a separate local recording plan when preserving a long program is important.
Live option is unavailable Channel verification, restriction history, or first-time activation delay Check the channel’s eligibility and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.

Costs and continuity: PC versus cloud

A local-PC setup gives you control over OBS and the recording location, but the computer, network, and power all need to remain available. A cable may help with local Wi-Fi reliability, but does not remove ISP or power risks. A cloud service moves the continuous playback workload off the home PC; compare the recurring cost with your actual electricity, hardware, and monitoring needs rather than assuming either approach is always cheaper.

Protect the channel and the stream’s content

A technically stable stream still has to comply with YouTube’s rules. Use only content you have the rights to stream, including music, visuals, and recordings in a playlist. A copyright claim or restriction can affect a stream regardless of its bitrate or uptime. Review YouTube’s current rules before broadcasting, and check that a continuous or repeated program adds value rather than relying on repetition alone. YouTube’s cited live-stream guidance establishes the technical and eligibility details above; it does not establish that any particular content will be approved or monetized.
