Best Software for Streaming Pre-Recorded Videos to YouTube Live

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For an unattended, one-time scheduled YouTube broadcast of a finished video, StreamYard is the best-supported easy option here: its help center says a scheduled pre-recorded broadcast starts at the chosen time even if you are offline, then ends when the video finishes. Choose OBS Studio if you want local scene control and can keep a computer and connection running. For continuous 24/7 playback, that is a different job: StreamNeo is the cloud option to consider first because it loops uploaded videos on YouTube without a computer running at home.

Choose by the kind of broadcast you need

Your priority Best fit What to expect
Schedule one finished video to start and finish without you at the computer StreamYard prerecorded broadcasts Automated playback at the scheduled time, within its plan, file, and production limits.
Control scenes, transitions, and local media playback OBS Studio More hands-on control, but your computer and network must be available when you stream.
Keep prerecorded videos looping on YouTube around the clock StreamNeo Cloud playback from uploaded videos, so a home computer does not need to stay on.

These options address different needs, so “best” depends on whether you value unattended scheduling, production control, or continuous playback. YouTube accepts encoder-based livestreaming and lists OBS among its software options. StreamYard’s product documentation is the primary source for its automated workflow and limits; its OBS comparison is vendor-authored, not independent testing.

StreamYard: easiest for a scheduled prerecorded broadcast

How its scheduled workflow works

  1. Prepare a recording in MP4 format with H.264 video encoding.
  2. In StreamYard, upload the recording, select YouTube as the destination, and choose the broadcast date and time.
  3. Check the studio resolution setting before scheduling. StreamYard says the prerecorded studio inherits the studio’s previous resolution setting.
  4. If viewers need a link before the event, schedule an announcement post. Without an announcement, StreamYard says the destination link does not appear until the stream goes live.
  5. At the scheduled time, the broadcast starts without you being online, and it ends when the video finishes.

Limits and production trade-offs

StreamYard’s help center lists the following limits. They are help-center specifications, not independently tested results; confirm the current plan details before relying on them.

Plan Maximum video duration Maximum upload size
Core 2 hours 10 GB
Advanced 4 hours 10 GB
Teams / Business 8 hours 25 GB
  • Uploads are MP4/H.264 with a maximum upload bitrate of 10 Mbps.
  • Paid plans support up to 1080p. The actual scheduled output can depend on the studio resolution setting, so check that setting before the event.
  • Scheduling can be up to 365 days ahead.
  • The automated prerecorded broadcast does not run through a controllable live studio: you cannot add live overlays or media assets, or show comments on-screen while the recording plays.
  • The prerecorded output is not automatically saved in the StreamYard library.

This mode suits polished playback with chat participation outside the video itself. If you need a host to introduce the video, change scenes, add overlays, or feature comments during playback, run a normal studio session and play the recording as media instead. That gives you live control, but the host must start and operate the stream.

OBS Studio: best when you want local scene control

YouTube lists OBS as a streaming software option. OBS can play local media and gives an operator scene and transition control, according to a StreamYard-authored comparison. In this workflow, OBS runs on your computer and encodes the stream, so the machine and internet connection need to remain available during the broadcast.

  1. Install and configure OBS, then add the recording as a media source in a scene.
  2. In YouTube’s live control room, create or select the broadcast and obtain its stream key.
  3. Enter the YouTube ingest details and stream key in OBS, then start streaming from OBS when ready.
  4. Monitor the preview and live status in YouTube. If you need a scheduled start and stop without an operator, plan for additional automation such as plugins or scripts; the StreamYard comparison describes this as generally requiring extra tooling.

This is the better fit when the video is part of a produced show rather than a simple hands-off replay. Exact OBS encoder values depend on the resolution, frame rate, connection, and YouTube settings you intend to use; the material supporting this comparison does not establish universal bitrate or keyframe values, so do not treat one preset as right for every stream.

For 24/7 looping, use a cloud playout service

A scheduled broadcast of one recording is not the same as keeping a channel live continuously. If your goal is repeated playback throughout the day and night, StreamNeo is the first option to consider: it keeps uploaded videos looping on YouTube from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot.

Or let it run in the cloud

  1. Upload your recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video or playlist from the cloud.

Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. The stream plays the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, without re-encoding or quality tiers; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. After that, the monthly option is $9.99 per month. One slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery, and support. UPI and cards are available in India; card checkout is available worldwide. See StreamNeo for plan details, or start the free first day.

What to check before you schedule

  • Destination and link: confirm YouTube is selected. If viewers need the URL in advance, schedule an announcement rather than assuming the destination link will already be visible.
  • Video fit: check duration, file size, format, and upload bitrate against the chosen StreamYard plan’s stated limits.
  • Resolution: verify the studio resolution setting; paid-plan support up to 1080p does not by itself guarantee that a particular scheduled broadcast is set to that output.
  • Production needs: decide whether playback alone is enough, or whether a host needs live overlays, scene changes, or on-screen comments.
  • YouTube rights and policies: make sure you have the rights to the video and its audio, and review YouTube’s current livestream and monetization rules. Scheduling or looping a video does not grant permission to use copyrighted material or ensure monetization eligibility.

Common problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause What to do
The scheduled broadcast does not start as expected Wrong destination or schedule details, or the scheduled workflow was not completed Recheck the selected YouTube destination, scheduled time, and broadcast status in StreamYard before the event.
Viewers cannot find the link before the broadcast No announcement post was scheduled Schedule an announcement if you need a shareable link in advance; otherwise the destination link appears when the stream goes live.
The result is not 720p or 1080p as expected The prerecorded studio inherits a prior studio resolution setting Verify the resolution setting before relying on the scheduled output.
The file cannot be uploaded or scheduled Format, bitrate, size, or duration exceeds a documented limit Use MP4/H.264, keep upload bitrate at or below 10 Mbps, and check the applicable plan’s duration and file-size ceilings.
You need overlays or comments on the video Automated prerecorded broadcasts do not run in a controllable studio Use a normal studio session and play the recording as media, with an operator present.
OBS does not go live unattended at the planned time OBS is a local encoder workflow; timing automation may require plugins or scripts Test the automation separately and ensure the computer and network stay available, or use a scheduled cloud workflow.

Which one should you choose?

  • Pick StreamYard for an easy scheduled broadcast when its duration, upload, quality, and production limits fit your video.
  • Pick OBS when you want desktop-based scene control and can operate or automate a computer-based encoder.
  • Pick StreamNeo when the actual requirement is continuous prerecorded playback on YouTube without leaving a computer running at home.

For an occasional scheduled event, an automated broadcast is usually simpler than building local automation. For a 24/7 channel, compare the cost and maintenance of a computer-based setup with cloud playback, and confirm that the service matches your YouTube and playlist requirements.
