A spare PC uses your local computer, electricity and internet connection; a VPS moves OBS to a remote instance whose processing, encoder access and outbound network capacity depend on its exact configuration. Choose only after checking the demands of your real scenes and testing the full stream. What changes when you move OBS from a spare PC to a VPS?
OBS runs the scenes and encodes the video before sending it to YouTube. With a spare PC, that work uses the computer’s CPU or GPU, home power and home internet. With a VPS, it uses the virtual server’s resources and network path. In either case, OBS still needs an appropriate encoder, enough sustained processing capacity, a stable connection to YouTube and a way to recover or alert you if something fails.
The label “VPS” does not tell you whether the instance has a suitable graphics encoder or enough sustained outbound bandwidth. A remote server can be useful for administration away from home, but the actual configuration and provider terms matter. Likewise, a computer that can open OBS is not necessarily able to encode your intended stream continuously at the desired settings.
Compare the two against your actual setup

Choose based on the work your stream requires
A spare PC may fit when your existing setup passes a realistic test
Local hosting can make sense if the PC can sustain your actual OBS scene and encoder settings, the home upload connection has adequate headroom, and you can keep the machine and network powered. Use a wired Ethernet connection where practical; Amazon IVS recommends wired networking in its own streaming guidance, but that is not a YouTube requirement or a guarantee against outages.

A VPS may fit when you need remote hosting and can verify the instance
Before paying for a VPS, identify the exact instance type, operating system, graphics or encoder access, outbound bandwidth limits and any burst-credit behavior. AWS documents GPU instances as an option for graphics workloads, but that does not establish that a particular instance is suitable or economical for your OBS stream. Confirm the full workflow—including remote control and recovery—rather than assuming a generic VPS plan will run OBS well.
Neither option is proven more reliable in general
The official OBS and YouTube guidance does not promise unattended 24/7 operation. There is no cited head-to-head uptime study comparing a spare PC with a VPS, and no general provider commitment here that settles the question. Reliability depends on the complete setup: local power and ISP, or the specific VPS and its network, plus monitoring and a workable restart plan.

Set YouTube’s ingest settings for both hosting choices
The same YouTube stream requirements apply whether OBS runs at home or on a server. YouTube recommends RTMPS for live ingestion, supports multiple video codecs, and advises creators to test with audio and movement similar to the real stream. It also recommends monitoring stream health and messages during the event. Its Help page says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”

These are YouTube Help’s recommended H.264 ingest settings; the accessed page showed no publication year. They are not measurements of what your PC, VPS or internet connection can sustain. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Select the bitrate and resolution for your actual output and encoder, then verify the resulting stream in YouTube’s health indicators.

Test the complete stream before relying on it
- Write down the workload. List every input and scene, the output resolution and frame rate, chosen codec and target bitrate. Scene complexity and encoder choice affect OBS’s processing demands.
- Run OBS with the real scenes. On the spare PC, test the intended settings on the hardware you will use. For a VPS, test on the exact instance and operating system you expect to keep. Confirm that the intended encoder is actually available.
- Test the connection under realistic conditions. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and checking stream health. Make sure the connection can sustain your planned output; a short speed test alone does not prove long-term stability. Amazon IVS recommends 50% more bandwidth than the minimum and a stable wired connection, but that is IVS guidance, not a YouTube rule.
- Check YouTube’s ingest feedback. Send a test stream with representative audio and motion, then inspect stream health and messages. Resolve warnings before leaving it unattended.
- Exercise recovery and monitoring. Establish how you will notice a failed stream, reconnect or restart OBS, regain remote or local access, and confirm that the broadcast has resumed. A successful short test does not establish 24/7 reliability.
- Review recurring operating costs and terms. For a PC, include power and any hardware upgrades; for a VPS, use the exact configuration and region’s price and check network allowances, support and service terms.
Common problems and what to check
- OBS drops frames or encoding lags: reduce workload or output demands and review the selected encoder. Test with the actual scene complexity; a compatible system is not necessarily powerful enough for the stream.
- YouTube reports an unstable or insufficient stream: check sustained upload capacity and the whole network path. For a VPS, verify instance-specific bandwidth and whether the stated capacity depends on bursting.
- The VPS has no usable hardware encoder: verify the instance’s actual GPU and encoder access before choosing it. The VPS label alone does not establish compatibility; AWS’s GPU-instance documentation describes a category, not a recommended setup for every OBS workload.
- The stream stops while nobody is watching the machine: check monitoring, alerts, reconnect behavior and restart access. Neither hosting location alone guarantees automatic recovery.
- The test looks fine but the long-running stream fails later: extend testing and review power, ISP, instance and provider-specific failure points. A brief test cannot prove continuous availability.

Copyright and YouTube policy still matter
Hosting does not grant rights to the video, music or other material in a stream. Use content you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check YouTube’s applicable copyright and live-stream rules before leaving a stream running. Replaying content continuously does not by itself establish that it meets YouTube’s monetization or reused-content policies; review the rules for your channel and content rather than assuming the hosting method changes them.
