Choose a hosted 24/7 streaming service if you want someone else’s platform to handle continuous video playout; choose OBS on a VPS if you want direct control and are prepared to configure, monitor, and recover the system yourself. Neither option is automatically cheaper or more reliable: compare current provider terms, compute and bandwidth costs, and what happens when a stream disconnects. Both still have to meet YouTube’s encoder requirements and its rules for the content.
What you are choosing between
A hosted service and OBS on a virtual private server (VPS) can both deliver pre-recorded video to YouTube as a live stream. The difference is who operates the continuous playout setup. A hosted service may take on some of those operations, but its exact controls and recovery behavior depend on the provider. With a VPS, you configure OBS and the server, then arrange monitoring and recovery yourself.

When each option makes sense
Choose a hosted service when
- You would rather not maintain a computer or server for continuous playout.
- The provider’s supported sources and controls fit your stream, and its recovery behavior and terms are clear.
- You have checked its price and any content, storage, or bandwidth limits against your needs.
Choose OBS on a VPS when
- You want direct control over OBS scenes, sources, encoder configuration, or automation.
- You can configure and maintain the operating system, OBS, and any restart and monitoring tools the stream needs.
- You have confirmed the selected VPS can sustain your intended output, including the required encoding and network capacity.
Do not assume a VPS will cost less just because it is rented by the hour or month: continuous compute, bandwidth, storage, and maintenance all count. Do not assume a managed service is more dependable without checking its current terms and operational evidence. YouTube recommends testing before a stream and monitoring stream health; test your full video and audio path, including what happens after a disconnect and restart. YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming guidance can help establish the delivery requirements.

- Check the server’s capacity. Confirm that the VPS can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate continuously, and has enough network capacity for the output bitrate. YouTube’s recommended bitrates are encoder guidance, not proof that a particular VPS can encode or deliver reliably.
- Set OBS output to match YouTube’s guidance. YouTube recommends RTMPS; supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video over RTMP/RTMPS; and lists up to 60 fps, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (not exceeding four seconds) in its encoder guidance. Its recommended H.264 bitrate is 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Other recommended rates vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. See YouTube’s current encoder settings for the relevant combination.
- Get the stream URL and key. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup workflow. Select YouTube in OBS if available, or enter YouTube’s stream URL and copy the stream key into the encoder’s key field.
- Protect the key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it or expose it in screenshots, scripts, logs, or shared configuration. If you believe it has been exposed, replace or reset it using YouTube’s stream workflow and update OBS.
- Start and confirm the stream. Start the encoder and follow the Live Control Room prompts to check the incoming stream and go live where prompted. Test the video, audio, and stream health before treating the setup as ready.
- Plan for failure and recovery. Set up monitoring and a way to restart OBS or reconnect after a process or connection failure. Test a disconnect and restart deliberately; do not assume that a process restart, VPS reboot, or YouTube reconnect will happen automatically.
Account for YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
YouTube says a live stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived. A stream that runs longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a replay matters, keep a separate local recording or plan segments rather than relying on a long continuous broadcast to produce a complete archive. YouTube’s archive guidance describes the limit.
DVR rewind can also be limited or unavailable beyond the 12-hour window, and device or app limits may be lower. Check the intended viewing experience instead of assuming viewers can rewind the entire broadcast. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.

Check content rights and monetization separately
Keeping a stream online does not grant permission to broadcast its contents. YouTube’s livestream terms say the creator represents that they have all necessary rights for worldwide use, including applicable music licensing rights. Confirm that you have permission for every video, track, and other element you stream; this is practical guidance, not legal advice. Read YouTube’s livestream terms.
Uptime and a live format do not guarantee monetization. YouTube applies its monetization policies to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 policy update uses “inauthentic content” for repetitive or mass-produced content, which is ineligible under the existing policy. A 24/7 loop therefore warrants an originality review, but the outcome depends on the channel and its content. See YouTube’s channel monetization policies.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that OBS has the correct stream URL and current key, that the selected YouTube workflow is configured correctly, and that the VPS can reach the ingest endpoint. Review the Live Control Room’s stream status.
- The video drops, stutters, or fails to stay live: Compare OBS’s output bitrate and settings with YouTube’s recommendations, then check sustained VPS encoding performance and outbound network stability. A recommendation is not a guarantee that the server or connection can maintain it.
- The stream does not recover after a disconnect: Check whether OBS is still running, whether its process supervision or restart handling worked, and whether it reconnected to YouTube. Test the failure and recovery path rather than relying on an assumed automatic restart.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: Check the stream duration against YouTube’s 12-hour archive guidance. For an important replay, maintain a separate recording or split the broadcast into planned segments.
- Viewers cannot rewind as expected: Check DVR availability for the stream duration and account for potentially lower limits on viewers’ devices or apps.
- Content or monetization is at risk: Review rights for all streamed material and assess whether a repetitive or mass-produced loop complies with YouTube’s monetization rules. Neither a successful connection nor a long runtime resolves those questions.
