Why Does My YouTube 24/7 Stream Keep Buffering?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

First find out whether buffering affects multiple viewers on different internet connections or just one viewer/device. If it is widespread, check the stream’s health, encoder output, upload capacity and settings. If it is isolated, investigate that viewer’s connection, device and playback quality. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance uses this distinction to help separate problems sending the stream to YouTube from problems playing it back.

First identify where buffering happens

Ask viewers whether the problem occurs on more than one device and on different internet connections. Reports from viewers on separate connections point toward a broadcaster-side issue; trouble confined to one viewer is a reason to start with that viewer’s playback path. YouTube’s “Troubleshoot your live stream” and “Troubleshoot video playback” guidance recommends checking from another connection or supported device when a problem persists.

  • Several viewers, separate connections: inspect Live Control Room stream health, encoder output and the broadcaster’s outbound connection.
  • One viewer or one network: test another connection or device, reduce playback quality and check Wi-Fi or competing network use.

Check stream health and encoder output

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room for the active broadcast and review the stream-health indicator and any messages. Treat the messages as diagnostic clues, not as a complete diagnosis of the cause.
  2. Inspect what the encoder is producing. Check whether its preview or local recording has clean, continuous audio and video. If the encoder output itself stutters, investigate the source, encoder software and system load before blaming YouTube playback.
  3. Check the outbound connection if the encoded picture and sound look healthy but viewers still report interruptions. YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting guidance identifies the outbound network as a possible cause in that situation.
  4. Update encoder software where appropriate and review CPU load and source quality. YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring stream health while live.

Compare stream bitrate with reliable upload capacity

For a broadcaster, upload capacity—not a headline download-speed figure—is the relevant network measurement. Run an upload speed test under conditions representative of the continuous stream, then compare available outbound bandwidth with the stream’s total bitrate. YouTube’s “Streaming tips” recommends leaving about 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total bitrate. That is YouTube’s guidance, not a measurement of your connection or a guarantee against buffering.

Include other traffic sharing the connection. If primary and backup feeds or other uploads use the same connection, account for their combined demand. Wi-Fi congestion, shared-network activity, upload limits and momentary interruptions can make a connection less dependable than its advertised speed suggests. YouTube’s encoder guidance also recommends testing upload bitrate before streaming.

Validate encoder settings for the stream you actually send

Use YouTube’s current “Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions” guidance for the selected codec, resolution and frame rate. The figures below are YouTube’s published H.264 ingestion recommendations; they are not guarantees of uninterrupted playback. Choose a quality your connection can sustain reliably, and test with representative motion and audio rather than relying on a single speed-test result.

H.264 video setting YouTube-listed minimum bitrate YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

Do not apply one bitrate figure to every stream: codec, resolution and frame rate matter. YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS ingestion guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, supports up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. YouTube specifically warns that keyframes sent too infrequently can cause buffering. Check the current encoder guidance and the options exposed by your encoder before changing settings.

Consider whether low latency is worth the tradeoff

YouTube says, “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” Its “Manage live stream settings” guidance describes normal latency as suitable for streams without audience interaction and as the mode with the lowest viewer buffering. For a continuous ambience or information stream where immediate conversation is not important, normal latency may be a better fit than a lower-latency setting. Check the actual latency option in Live Control Room rather than assuming a particular mode is selected.

Check the viewer’s playback connection and device

If buffering is limited to one person or location, ask that viewer to test a different internet connection or supported device. They can also lower the playback quality manually to see whether the connection can sustain the stream at a lower setting.

  • If the device and router both have Ethernet ports, a wired connection can be a useful test when Wi-Fi reliability is in question; it is not a universal fix.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe What to check next
Several viewers on different connections report buffering Live Control Room health messages, encoder output, total stream bitrate, upload headroom and keyframe interval.
Encoder preview or local recording also stutters Source quality, encoder software and system load; the interruption may occur before the stream reaches YouTube.
Encoder output looks healthy, but viewers across connections still report trouble Measure the broadcaster’s outbound upload under representative conditions and check for shared traffic or interruptions.
Only one viewer, device or network is affected Try another connection or supported device, lower playback quality, improve Wi-Fi conditions and reduce competing traffic.
Buffering worsened after choosing lower latency Consider normal latency if the stream does not depend on real-time audience interaction.
