A black screen does not identify one cause by itself. First compare the encoder preview or a local recording with the incoming preview in YouTube Studio: if the encoder is already black, investigate the loop file, active scene, or source; if the encoder looks right but YouTube does not, check Studio alerts and the connection between the encoder and YouTube.
Find where the picture disappears
A live stream can be connected and still send no usable picture. The encoder captures and compresses the video source routed into it; YouTube receives that output. Compare the image at each point before changing settings.
- Check the encoder preview. Look at the scene or output currently being streamed. If available, make a short local recording and play it back.
- Check YouTube Studio’s incoming preview. Open the live control room for the active broadcast and look for the video preview, stream health indicators, and any warning or rights notice.
- Follow the branch that matches what you see. If the encoder preview or local recording is black, start with the loop media, scene, and source. If those show video but YouTube Studio does not, investigate the encoder output, outgoing connection, and YouTube Studio alerts.
YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide recommends checking the encoder’s preview and the video sources routed to it. The distinction matters: an active connection or “streaming” status does not prove that a visible picture is reaching viewers.
If the encoder preview or recording is black
Verify the loop media and active scene
- Confirm the intended loop file or playlist is loaded and that playback has started. If the encoder uses scenes, make sure the scene currently on air is the one containing the loop.
- Check that the media or capture source is enabled, visible, and not covered by another source in the scene.
- Confirm the source points to the intended file, window, display, game, or camera. A source can remain present in a scene while targeting a different input than the one you expect.
- If the loop has more than one clip, inspect the transition point. A missing, unavailable, or misconfigured item may affect playback even if the first clip appears correctly.
Use the troubleshooting path for the source type
Capture settings depend on what the stream uses and which operating system it runs on. OBS’s official knowledge base search for “BLACK SCREEN” links to separate guidance for game capture, display capture, macOS screen capture, and streaming or encoding. Choose the article for your actual source and system rather than applying a generic GPU or capture-mode change.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If the video is a prerecorded loop rather than a live screen or camera capture, focus first on the media source, playback state, and active scene. A capture-card or camera fix will not help unless that hardware is part of the source path.
If the encoder looks right but YouTube is black
Check the encoder and outgoing stream
- Install or update to the latest version of the encoder you use, then check its preview again.
- Review encoder error messages and CPU load. Look for a stalled output or an error that began when the picture disappeared.
- Confirm the intended video source is routed to the live output, not just visible in a preview scene that is not being sent.
- Check the outgoing connection and YouTube Studio’s live dashboard. YouTube recommends investigating the connection if the encoder image is healthy but the received stream is not; if appropriate, testing another encoder can help isolate the problem.
YouTube defines a live-stream encoder as “the app, program or tool that you can use to capture and compress your live stream.” The encoder’s preview helps distinguish a source problem from trouble on the path to YouTube. See YouTube’s encoder and stream troubleshooting steps.

Look for a YouTube warning before restarting
Read any notice in YouTube Studio before repeatedly stopping and restarting the encoder. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. When it identifies third-party material, YouTube says a placeholder image may replace the live stream; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated.
This is especially relevant to loops containing music or video. Even material you are licensed to use can be interrupted if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Check the dashboard and rights status, and resolve the applicable rights issue rather than treating every blank preview as an encoder fault.

When a stream-key change is—and is not—the next step
A black picture alone does not establish that the stream key is wrong. YouTube’s troubleshooting guide recommends creating or updating a stream key for certain encoder errors when starting a stream. That is a different symptom from a stream that is already sending but appears black. Refresh the key only when the encoder reports a relevant start or connection error, and update the encoder with the corresponding key through its stream settings.
One OBS GitHub issue describes a user report in which a YouTube preview turned black after a monetization-setting change while OBS still showed streaming. It was closed as “not planned”; it is an individual report, not evidence that monetization changes generally cause black screens.

A focused troubleshooting checklist
- Black in encoder and local recording: check the loop file or playback, active scene, source visibility, and the selected input.
- Encoder preview works; YouTube preview is black: check Studio’s live dashboard and notices, encoder errors and CPU load, source routing, and the outgoing connection.
- YouTube shows a rights or content notice: review the loop’s music and video rights and any applicable Content ID allowlist status before restarting.
- Encoder cannot start or reports a key error: follow the stream-key guidance for that error; do not assume a key refresh will fix a black picture by itself.
- Still unresolved: note the encoder and version, operating system, source type, whether audio continues, whether a local recording is black, and any YouTube Studio warning. Those details narrow the next check.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your loop is prerecorded and your goal is a continuously running YouTube stream, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not stream from a camera.
