How to Set Up an FFmpeg YouTube Stream on a Raspberry Pi 5

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can send a Raspberry Pi 5 camera feed to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, but the right command depends on how you capture video and audio. This guide uses a Pi camera as its explicit example, explains YouTube’s ingest settings, and shows how to test safely before making a stream public. Pi 5 uses software video encoders, so start conservatively and monitor both the Pi and YouTube’s stream health.

What you need and what this guide assumes

The example below is for a Raspberry Pi 5 with a compatible Raspberry Pi camera using the current rpicam-vid camera stack. It is a setup outline, not a command verified on a particular Pi OS image or FFmpeg package: camera options and FFmpeg input support can vary by installed build. Check the help output on your Pi before adapting it.

  • A Raspberry Pi 5, Raspberry Pi OS, and a camera supported by the installed camera stack.
  • FFmpeg with the required input, muxer, and encoder support. Confirm available options locally with ffmpeg -version, ffmpeg -h, and, where relevant, ffmpeg -encoders.
  • A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming, access to YouTube Live Control Room, and a stable wired or wireless upload connection.
  • An audio source if the broadcast needs sound. This guide does not assume a microphone device name or a particular audio interface.

Raspberry Pi documents that Pi 5 uses software video encoders. For real-time use, software encoding can add frame latency. Its camera documentation describes --low-latency for rpicam-vid; this can encode frames more quickly, with tradeoffs in coding efficiency, use of multiple processor cores, and possibly maximum frame rate. Raspberry Pi says 1080p30 remains readily achievable, but actual results depend on the scene and configuration. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

Choose the capture and audio path

Pi camera

Use rpicam-vid to capture from the Pi camera. Raspberry Pi documents a libav backend for rpicam-vid that can encode audio and video and save or stream them over a network. The available encoders depend on the platform; do not assume a hardware video encoder is present on Pi 5.

USB camera

A USB camera may expose video through a Linux device interface, but its device path, pixel format, frame rate, and audio capabilities are specific to the camera and OS. Check the device and the local FFmpeg input help, then use the appropriate input options. If it has no audio, select a separate microphone input or deliberately stream without audio.

Video file

For a prerecorded file, FFmpeg reads the file rather than a live camera. You can copy video only when the file’s codec, frame rate, timestamps, and other stream properties already meet YouTube’s chosen output requirements. Otherwise, re-encode it. A file input does not automatically supply live microphone audio.

Separate microphone or no audio

Audio must be selected and mapped explicitly when it comes from a separate device. The device identifier and input syntax vary, so inspect the local FFmpeg build and operating system rather than copying a guessed device name. If no audio is required, omit the audio stream deliberately; if it is required, confirm it is present and in sync during testing.

Configure YouTube Live before sending video

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select the live event.
  2. Copy the current ingest address and stream key shown for that event. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to stream to your channel.
  3. Use YouTube’s recommended RTMPS ingest where your chosen sender supports it. The correct endpoint and path matter; YouTube’s API guidance specifies port 443 and the server hostname/SNI for RTMPS authentication.
  4. Start with an unlisted or private test event if available, and confirm the preview and stream-health status in Live Control Room before switching to a public broadcast.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension of RTMP. Its current Help settings specify H.264, H.265, or AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate encoding; up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that must not exceed four seconds. For a straightforward compatibility-oriented setup, use H.264 video, AAC audio when audio is included, CBR, and a two-second GOP. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and the YouTube Live API stream documentation.

Set a starting resolution and bitrate

Choose resolution and frame rate based on the camera, Pi load, and measured upload capacity. YouTube’s current settings table gives these H.264 figures:

Output YouTube-listed minimum bitrate YouTube-recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published guidance, not measurements of a Raspberry Pi 5’s performance. Leave bandwidth headroom for network fluctuation rather than setting the stream at the full measured upload rate. If the connection or encoder struggles, reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. Check YouTube’s current table before going live because platform recommendations can change.

Build and test the FFmpeg workflow

There is no single safe, universal FFmpeg command for every Pi camera, USB camera, file, and microphone. Instead, build the command around the actual inputs and verify each option against the installed tools.

  1. Verify capture first. Use the camera stack to confirm the Pi camera produces video at the chosen resolution and frame rate. For a Pi camera latency test, compare normal capture with rpicam-vid --low-latency using options supported by your installed version.
  2. Verify FFmpeg capabilities. Check that the local build supports the input format, H.264 encoder, AAC encoder, and RTMP/RTMPS output you intend to use. Raspberry Pi OS package builds need not expose identical options.
  3. Map the intended streams. Identify which input supplies video and, if needed, which supplies audio. Map only the streams you intend to send; an unselected microphone or absent audio track will not appear automatically.
  4. Choose copy or re-encode for video. Copying avoids another encode only when the incoming encoded video already satisfies the output codec, timing, frame-rate, and keyframe requirements. Otherwise encode to H.264 with constant bitrate and a two-second keyframe interval.
  5. Encode audio if present. Use a YouTube-supported audio format such as AAC, and verify levels and synchronization with moving video. Do not assume that a camera or capture device has an audio track.
  6. Send to the event’s current ingest URL. Supply the RTMPS endpoint and stream key using the syntax supported by the local FFmpeg build. Avoid placing a real key in a public script, screenshot, repository, or shared log; use a private configuration method and restrict file permissions where applicable.
  7. Run a representative rehearsal. Include the expected movement, lighting, and sound. Watch FFmpeg output and Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health messages. Change one setting at a time so you can identify the cause of any improvement or failure.

FFmpeg’s general manual explains its command structure, but it does not establish which inputs, encoders, or flags are available in a particular Raspberry Pi OS package. Check the FFmpeg command-line documentation alongside local help.

Troubleshoot common problems

The picture arrives late

Pi 5’s software video encoding can add latency. For a Pi camera, assess rpicam-vid’s --low-latency option. It trades some coding efficiency and potentially peak frame rate for faster frame output. Also check whether buffering in the capture, encode, or network path is contributing.

YouTube reports unstable ingest or dropped frames

Check the upload connection and YouTube’s stream-health messages. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the connection cannot sustain the selected output. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and rehearsing with representative content; a brief speed test does not guarantee a stable long broadcast.

RTMPS connection or TLS fails

Confirm that you copied the current RTMPS endpoint and path for the event, use the required port 443, and preserve the correct server hostname/SNI. A malformed path or using the wrong host can prevent authentication even when the key is correct.

There is no sound or audio is out of sync

Confirm the selected audio input exists, is mapped into the output, and is encoded in a supported format. Test speech or other expected sound together with motion, then check YouTube’s preview. Correct the capture or mapping first rather than assuming a generic microphone device name.

FFmpeg rejects an encoder or option

Inspect ffmpeg -version, ffmpeg -h, and encoder/input listings on the Pi. Package capabilities vary; an option from an online example may not exist in your build. Use syntax supported by the installed version or install a build that provides the needed feature.

The stream stops after the test or the Pi loses power

A self-hosted FFmpeg process depends on the Pi, its power, and its network connection remaining available. Confirm the process is still running and check the Pi and network before restarting. If you expose or share a stream key while diagnosing, replace it in YouTube before the next broadcast.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a continuous YouTube stream made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a different approach: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it is not a camera-streaming service.

  • Any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps streams as made, at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers.
  • It can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.

Copyright and YouTube channel considerations

Only stream video and audio you have the rights or permissions to use. A live stream can be interrupted or restricted if it contains material that violates copyright rules. Separately, YouTube’s monetization review may consider whether a channel offers original value rather than repetitive or reused material; permission to use a clip does not by itself guarantee monetization eligibility. Review YouTube’s current policies for your content and channel before scheduling a long-running stream.
