On Windows, create a Task Scheduler task that runs OBS when your streaming account logs on, and pass OBS the --startstreaming launch argument. Set the task’s Start in directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. Then test that the stream is actually live at its destination after a reboot: opening OBS alone does not confirm a successful connection.
Before setting up automatic streaming
First, start OBS manually and confirm that the intended profile, scene collection, scene, account, and streaming destination work. The launch argument can request that OBS start streaming, but it cannot fix an incomplete setup or guarantee that the network and destination are ready.
Find the location of obs64.exe on your PC. Use the path from your own installation rather than assuming a default folder. OBS’s Launch Parameters documentation recommends setting the working directory to the folder containing the executable for scheduled and other automated launches.
Set OBS to start streaming when you log in
- Open Task Scheduler. Create a task for the Windows account and session in which you normally run OBS.
- Add a logon trigger. Set the trigger to When I log on. This starts OBS after that user signs in, rather than as a background process before a desktop session exists. Windows supports logon triggers and a configurable trigger delay; see Microsoft’s logon trigger reference.
- Set the action to start OBS. Choose Start a program. In Program/script, enter the full path to your
obs64.exe. - Add the launch argument. Enter
--startstreamingin Add arguments. OBS documents this switch as “Automatically start streaming.” - Set the working directory. In Start in, enter the folder containing
obs64.exe, not the executable’s filename. For example, if the program path isC:some-folderobs64.exe, the working directory isC:some-folder. OBS documents the working-directory requirement for automated launches on its launch-parameters page. - Save and test the task. Run it once from Task Scheduler. Confirm OBS opens and then check the destination platform to verify that the stream is live. Finally, sign out and back in or reboot, then repeat that verification.
Choose between Task Scheduler and a Startup-folder shortcut
A shortcut is a simpler option if you only need OBS to launch at sign-in. Task Scheduler is a better fit when you want a logon delay, an explicit working directory, or a task tied to a particular account.

Optional: select a specific OBS profile or scene
If OBS must open a particular configuration, its documented launch parameters include --profile "name", --collection "name", and --scene "name". Replace each name with an existing profile, scene collection, or scene. Keep quotation marks around names containing spaces, and confirm the names in OBS before relying on them at startup. These options can be combined with --startstreaming; see the OBS launch-parameters guide.

Handle boot timing and launch failures
OBS opens, but the stream is not live
Check the stream status at the destination rather than treating an open OBS window as proof of success. The launch parameter requests streaming; it does not guarantee that the service accepted the connection or that the stream key, network, and scene sources are ready.
The task runs before the network or service is ready
Try a modest delay on the Task Scheduler logon trigger, then test again after a full reboot. Microsoft’s logon trigger reference describes the delay setting. Choose a delay based on your own startup behavior; no fixed wait time is guaranteed to work for every PC.

The argument seems to be ignored
Check the exact spelling --startstreaming, confirm that the task points to the intended obs64.exe, and verify that the argument is in the action’s arguments field rather than appended to the working-directory field. You can also test the launch outside Task Scheduler. OBS’s current source repository recognizes the launch option: OBS Studio source repository.
The task runs at boot but OBS is invisible
A logon trigger is the appropriate choice for ordinary desktop streaming because it starts OBS in the streaming user’s session. Windows also supports an At startup trigger, but a task running as SYSTEM is non-interactive, so its program is not visible to the signed-in user. See Microsoft’s boot trigger reference.
