Before going live, check channel eligibility, choose settings your upload connection can sustain, test the actual viewer feed, and plan for outages. One important limitation: YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; its cited guidance does not promise an archive for a single 24-hour stream.
Before you set up OBS, check YouTube Live access
- Your channel must be verified, and it must have had no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- YouTube’s Help guidance sets the minimum age for livestreaming at 16.
- Allow time for live streaming to become available after enabling it in YouTube Studio. Check the current status in your account before scheduling a broadcast.
These are access requirements, not a guarantee that every stream or channel will be approved for every feature. YouTube’s current eligibility guidance is at Get started with live streaming.
Create an encoder stream in YouTube Studio
- Sign in to YouTube Studio and open Create → Go live. Select the encoder workflow, then create or schedule the stream. Set its title, visibility and other details for the broadcast you intend to run.
- In the Live Control Room, find the stream URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings → Stream. Choose YouTube if the service is listed, or select a custom server and enter the URL and key from Live Control Room.
- Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen, include it in a public recording, or share it with an untrusted person. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace the old key in OBS.
- Start the encoder in OBS and wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Verify the title, visibility and preview before starting the public event in YouTube Studio.

Set OBS video, audio and connection options
Use YouTube’s encoder recommendations as the baseline
In OBS, open Settings → Output and configure the streaming encoder and bitrate; use Settings → Video for canvas/output resolution and frame rate. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of two seconds (no more than four), and RTMPS. It lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 support depending on ingestion mode. For a typical SDR setup, H.264 over RTMPS is a straightforward baseline. Use the resolution-specific bitrate table in YouTube’s guide rather than assuming one bitrate fits every resolution and frame rate: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; its 5.1-channel guidance is 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Match the audio configuration in OBS to the actual programme and avoid enabling a surround format unless your content and workflow support it.
Choose resolution and bitrate for a stable upload
There is no universal internet-speed figure for a 24/7 OBS stream. The needed upload capacity depends on the selected video and audio bitrates, while a connection that fluctuates or drops packets can still interrupt a stream even if its advertised speed is high. Check the YouTube bitrate recommendation for the selected output resolution and frame rate, then test at that setting over the connection you will use continuously. Leave capacity for normal network variation and other devices; do not treat the provider’s headline speed as guaranteed sustained throughput.

Use RTMPS for the normal workflow; reserve HLS for a reason
YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the feed to Google’s servers. HLS is a specialized alternative for supported codecs or HDR workflows, but YouTube notes that it has higher latency and imposes protocol requirements, including TS segments, HTTPS POST/PUT and a rolling playlist with at most five outstanding segments. OBS is listed among encoders capable of HLS. Unless you need that specialized path, use the standard RTMPS workflow. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
Test the stream before making it public
- Schedule or create an unlisted test stream in YouTube Studio.
- Start OBS before the planned public start and check the Live Control Room preview for picture, audio and health warnings.
- Watch the unlisted stream on a separate viewer device and network if possible. Confirm that viewers can hear the intended audio, see the full frame and follow the stream without obvious stalls.
- Test any backup encoder or reconnect procedure rather than assuming it will work during an outage.
- During the real broadcast, monitor YouTube’s stream health and the actual audio/video output. YouTube recommends preparing in advance, checking the preview and monitoring quality: Create a live stream with an encoder.
Plan for outages and decide how to handle the 12-hour archive limit
Keep the computer workflow recoverable
A PC-based OBS stream depends on the streaming computer, OBS, power, the local network and the internet connection all continuing to work. Decide who or what will notice a failed stream, how OBS will be restarted after a crash, and how it will reconnect after an ISP or power interruption. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover; a backup path needs its own setup and should be tested before relying on it.

A UPS can reduce brief power interruptions for the computer and network equipment. It is optional, should be sized for the real connected load and desired runtime, and cannot solve an internet outage or a YouTube-side problem. India’s National Informatics Centre describes institutional webcast operations, including 24×7 services for government TV channels and the use of OBS among webcast encoders; that example does not establish the uptime a home PC or consumer connection can achieve. Do not assume a single 24-hour broadcast will be archived
YouTube’s encoder instructions state that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. They do not promise automatic archival for every stream lasting 12 hours or longer, so do not count on a single 24-hour event producing a replay. If an archive matters, consider shorter scheduled sessions with deliberate transitions and confirm current behavior in Studio before making the archive part of your plan. YouTube’s cited guidance also does not establish a universal maximum event duration.

Use content you have the right to stream
Use original material or obtain permissions that cover both livestreaming and any replay you intend to make available. YouTube scans live content for third-party matches and may interrupt a stream when it detects protected material. A licence alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel in Content ID. YouTube’s terms require the necessary rights for the territories where content is used: YouTube Terms of Service and How Content ID works.
India’s Copyright Office describes Section 52 exceptions as limited and purpose-specific; they are not blanket permission to relay songs, films, television or another creator’s feed. For commercially important or legally uncertain material, get permission or qualified legal advice about the specific use. See the Copyright Office material on exceptions.
