Before YouTube accepts a channel into the YouTube Partner Program (YPP), it cannot use YouTube’s native monetization features. That includes earning a share of ad revenue and turning on features such as memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, or Shopping. A channel may qualify to apply at 500 subscribers in participating regions, but it must be accepted before those features become available.
YouTube may still show ads on an unapproved channel’s videos. Seeing an ad does not mean the channel earns a share of the revenue.
What can you monetize before YPP approval?
There is no YouTube-native monetization feature established as available to a channel before YPP acceptance. YouTube’s Commerce Products policy requires fan-funding creators to apply for and be accepted into YPP before turning those features on. The same distinction applies to ads: YouTube can serve ads on content without sharing their revenue with a channel that has not met the higher eligibility criteria.
- Before acceptance: Do not count on YouTube memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers, Super Thanks, Shopping, Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, or YouTube Premium revenue.
- After expanded-YPP acceptance: Eligible creators may gain access to fan funding and Shopping, subject to each feature’s additional requirements.
- After meeting the higher threshold and being accepted: Eligible creators may access Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and YouTube Premium revenue.
These are YouTube-native features. Sponsorships or other off-platform arrangements are different from YPP features; the official YouTube guidance cited here does not establish their availability or terms for a new channel.

What does the 500-subscriber threshold actually unlock?
In countries and regions where expanded YPP is available, a channel can apply for early access when it meets all of these thresholds:
- 500 subscribers
- Three valid public uploads in the last 90 days
- Either 3,000 qualified public watch hours in the last 12 months or 3 million qualified public Shorts views in the last 90 days
Meeting the numbers makes the channel eligible to apply; it does not guarantee acceptance. YouTube reviews the channel as a whole. The 500-subscriber route is an earlier entry into YPP, not permission to use YouTube monetization before approval.

Features available at this early YPP tier
For accepted creators who meet the applicable requirements, expanded YPP lists channel memberships, Super Chat and Super Stickers, Super Thanks, and Shopping. Shopping may include connecting an official merchandise store, promoting the creator’s own products, or promoting products from other brands. Availability varies by feature and location.
Fan-funding features have additional conditions: the creator must be at least 18, live where the specific feature is offered, and accept the relevant Commerce Product Module terms. Individual features can have their own eligibility requirements as well.

What is required for ad and YouTube Premium revenue?
As published on October 3, 2026, the higher YPP threshold for Watch Page Ads, Shorts Feed Ads, and YouTube Premium is 1,000 subscribers plus either:
- 4,000 qualified public watch hours in the preceding 12 months; or
- 10 million qualified public Shorts views in the preceding 90 days.
These figures establish eligibility to apply, not automatic approval. Shorts Feed viewing time does not count toward the 4,000-hour long-form watch-hour threshold. Paid ad campaign views and watch time do not count toward YPP thresholds; YouTube says qualifying organic views that follow promoted content can count.

Announced threshold change for February 1, 2027
YouTube’s help material says that, from February 1, 2027, new creators will need 1,000 subscribers plus either 8,000 qualified watch hours over the previous 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views over the previous 90 days for ad and Premium revenue access. This is an announced future rule, not the threshold active on October 3, 2026. The same update says the earlier fan-funding and Shopping entry thresholds remain unchanged.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why ads can appear before you earn ad revenue
YouTube reserves the right to serve ads on content. Its Partner Program guidance explains that creators who do not meet the higher eligibility criteria may still see ads on their videos but are not yet eligible for a share of that revenue. An ad impression is therefore not evidence that an unapproved channel is earning from it.

How to check your channel’s eligibility
- Open YouTube Studio for the channel.
- Select Earn in the left-hand menu.
- Review the eligibility status and the features shown for that channel and region.
- If an application option is available, check that the channel meets the displayed requirements and review YouTube’s terms before applying.
Expanded YPP is not available everywhere, and feature availability can vary by region. The Earn area is the practical place to confirm what the specific channel can apply for and which features YouTube offers it.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your channel uses uploaded videos as a 24/7 YouTube livestream, StreamNeo is a separate streaming service, not a YPP monetization feature. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. A livestream does not itself grant YPP eligibility or approval. Start the free first day with StreamNeo.
