Choose the highest resolution and frame rate your encoder and outbound connection can sustain reliably—not simply the highest setting available. Match your encoder’s codec and frame rate to YouTube’s recommended live ingest bitrate, leave the 20% upload headroom YouTube advises, and test a representative stream before relying on it. YouTube publishes no separate resolution requirement for 24/7 streams.
Start with the stream you can sustain
Resolution is only one part of the choice. YouTube’s live ingest recommendations vary by codec, resolution and frame rate, so compare the exact combination you plan to use. The H.264 reference values below are from YouTube Help’s live encoder guidance, checked on October 3, 2026; they are recommended ingest bitrates, not guarantees of picture quality or uninterrupted streaming.

These figures apply to H.264. YouTube’s table gives different ranges for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so use the row for your actual ingest codec rather than applying H.264 numbers to another encoder format. See YouTube Help’s live encoder settings.
Choose between 720p and 1080p, and 30 and 60 fps
720p versus 1080p
1080p can preserve more visual detail, but YouTube’s H.264 guidance calls for a higher recommended bitrate at 1080p30 than at 720p30. If your upload connection cannot sustain that rate with headroom, 720p may be the more dependable setting. A stable lower-resolution stream is a practical choice over a higher setting that repeatedly loses connection; this is an operational inference from YouTube’s bitrate and reliability guidance, not a special 24/7 rule.

30 fps versus 60 fps
Use 60 fps when the source has motion that benefits from smoother movement and your encoder and connection can support it. For mostly static visuals, 30 fps may be sufficient. Check the exact frame-rate row: YouTube’s H.264 table lists 720p30 and 720p60 at the same recommended bitrate, while its 1080p60 recommendation is higher than 1080p30.
Check upload capacity and leave headroom
YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must not exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room. That matters for a continuous stream: do not choose a bitrate that uses the entire measured upload capacity. Measure outbound performance under the conditions in which the stream will actually run, including the time of day and network connection you expect to use. If you send primary and backup streams, account for the bandwidth of both.

YouTube also emphasizes connection reliability: a disruption can break a live stream. A speed result alone does not establish that a connection will remain stable for a long-running broadcast. For YouTube’s guidance, see the live streaming setup recommendations.
Test the real workload before leaving it live
- Identify the ingest codec and frame rate. Find the matching codec, resolution and frame-rate combination in YouTube’s live encoder recommendations.
- Measure outbound upload capacity. Check it under the conditions the stream will run in, then confirm the chosen bitrate fits while leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Run a representative test. Use the intended resolution, frame rate and audio, with movement similar to the planned content. YouTube specifically recommends testing with representative audio and movement.
- Watch stream health and messages. Check YouTube’s stream health information during the test. If the connection or encoder struggles, reduce resolution or frame rate and test again. This is a practical adjustment, not an automatic YouTube fallback rule.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. Your ingest resolution therefore does not mean every viewer will receive that exact resolution. See YouTube’s live streaming help.

Choose latency separately from resolution
Lower latency can increase playback buffering, according to YouTube. If viewers do not need to interact with you in real time, very low latency may not be worthwhile; choose it according to the stream’s interaction needs and check the resulting viewer experience. Latency is not a substitute for selecting a stable bitrate and connection. YouTube’s explanation is at its live streaming setup page.
There is a separate format-specific recommendation for 360-degree livestreams: YouTube prefers 1440p or 2160p when supported. That guidance is for 360-degree video, not a general recommendation for ordinary 24/7 streams. See YouTube Help.
