Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTo stream a playlist of local video files on YouTube with OBS, add OBS’s VLC Video source to a scene, load the files into its playlist, set the playback order and looping behavior, then connect OBS to YouTube Live Control Room with your stream key. This method plays files stored on your computer; it does not import a YouTube playlist URL directly into the VLC source.
Choose the right OBS source for your playlist
Use the VLC Video source when you want multiple local files to play in one OBS scene, in order or shuffled. VLC must be installed, and OBS specifies that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. For a single local file, OBS also provides Media Source. To show a YouTube playlist already playing in a browser, use window or display capture instead; that captures the browser rather than importing the playlist into VLC. See the OBS Media Sources guide and OBS Sources Guide.
| Workflow | Use it when | Key consideration |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video source | You have local video files to play as a playlist in OBS. | Requires VLC; configure order, shuffle, looping, and behavior when the source is hidden. |
| Media Source | You need to play one local media file. | The OBS documentation describes playlist support under VLC Video, not Media Source. |
| Window or display capture | You need to show a browser or another application playing content. | Captures the application or screen; audio routing and setup depend on your operating system and configuration. |
Set up a local video playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC Media Player. Match VLC’s architecture to OBS. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC so the VLC Video source is available.
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose a scene in the Scenes dock, or use the plus button to create one. A scene is the composition that will be sent to YouTube.
- Add the VLC Video source. In the Sources dock, click the plus button, select VLC Video, and create or select the source. If prompted, give it a recognizable name.
- Load the files. In the source properties, add the local video files you want in the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want them to play. Resize and position the source in the preview as needed; its place in the Sources list determines which sources appear above it.
- Choose playback behavior. Leave shuffle off for the listed order, or enable it for random playback. Set whether the playlist loops. OBS documents looping on and shuffle off as the VLC Video defaults.
- Decide what happens when the source is hidden. The documented default is to stop playback when the source is not visible and restart it when visible. If you switch scenes, consider whether restarting the playlist is acceptable; test that behavior before a scheduled stream.
- Check the scene’s picture and sound. Play the playlist in OBS and confirm the video fits the canvas and that the expected audio is present at a suitable level. If you use browser capture instead, verify both the browser image and its audio are included; capture and audio behavior can vary by operating system and setup.
Connect OBS to YouTube and start safely
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days to live stream. Check YouTube Studio for the account’s current eligibility and interface. See YouTube live streaming tips.
- Create or select an encoder stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and choose the encoder stream you intend to use. Review the stream’s visibility setting—public, private, or unlisted—before you begin. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains stream settings.
- Enter the stream key in OBS. Copy the key from YouTube Studio into OBS’s stream configuration. Treat it like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your channel. Do not publish or share it.
- Preview and test. Before a public event, check the Live Control Room preview and run a test stream. Confirm the right playlist, picture, audio, and visibility are in place. YouTube recommends setting up encoders in advance and monitoring audio and video quality during the stream.
- Start the stream and monitor it. Start streaming from OBS, confirm the feed appears in the Live Control Room, and keep an eye on both audio and video quality. YouTube notes that expensive equipment is not required, but a test and active monitoring help catch setup problems.
Check rights and YouTube rules before broadcasting
You are responsible for having the necessary rights to rebroadcast every video and its audio in your playlist. A video being available on YouTube, or a playlist being accessible in a browser, does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast it in a live stream. Check the licenses and permissions for each item before going live.
YouTube requires live content to comply with its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. The platform may age-restrict or remove a stream, or restrict a creator’s ability to stream; a warning, strike, or restriction can affect live-stream access. See YouTube’s live streaming policies. Following platform rules does not determine whether you have the rights to the material.

Troubleshoot common playlist and stream problems
- VLC Video is missing from the source menu: Install VLC and check that its architecture matches OBS. In particular, 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- Files play in the wrong order: Review the playlist order and turn shuffle off if you want sequential playback.
- The playlist ends instead of restarting: Check the VLC Video source’s loop setting.
- Playback restarts after changing scenes: Check the source’s visibility behavior. OBS documents stopping playback while hidden and restarting when visible as the default; test the intended scene-switching behavior.
- The browser is visible but its audio is missing: If using window or display capture, check the audio routing and capture configuration for your operating system. OBS documentation establishes capture as an option, but the exact setup depends on the system and configuration.
- YouTube does not show an incoming preview: Confirm the OBS stream key and selected YouTube encoder stream match, then check the Live Control Room and OBS connection status. Keep the key private.
- You cannot start a live stream: Check channel verification and whether YouTube has imposed a live-stream restriction. The current account status is shown in YouTube Studio.
