Your live stream stops because the encoder has run out of video to send. YouTube receives the feed from your encoder; it does not keep replaying the source file after that file ends. Loop the video or switch to another source that keeps the feed active, then check YouTube’s auto-stop setting.
What stops when the video ends?
There are three separate parts to a YouTube live stream:
- Source: the video file or other media being played.
- Encoder feed: the video and audio your encoder sends to YouTube using your stream key and configured stream settings.
- Broadcast: the live event viewers watch on YouTube.
If the source is one finite video, playback can reach its endpoint and stop. If the encoder then stops sending video, YouTube has no continuing feed to show, even if you expected the broadcast to remain open. YouTube’s documentation distinguishes the incoming stream from the broadcast it is associated with (Understanding Broadcasts and Streams).
How YouTube auto-stop affects the broadcast
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, review the stream’s auto-stop setting. YouTube says that when auto-start and auto-stop are enabled, you can start or stop streaming from the encoder. With auto-stop enabled, the Live Streaming API documentation says the broadcast ends about a minute after the bound stream stops transmitting video (Life of a Broadcast).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Auto-stop controls what YouTube does after the encoder feed stops; it does not loop a file or create video to replace the missing feed. Turning it off may change whether YouTube automatically ends the broadcast, but it will not restore the stream content. You still need an active video feed for viewers to see continuing video. YouTube’s help page covers stream keys, encoder feeds, auto-start and auto-stop under Manage live stream settings.
Keep the feed going: fix the playback source
- Check what happens at the file’s endpoint. Watch the encoder or playback application when the video reaches its end. Confirm whether it stops playback, closes the source, or continues sending video.
- Enable repeat or loop playback. Turn on the source application’s repeat/loop control so the video starts again when it finishes. The exact label and location depend on the software you use.
- For multiple clips, set up a continuing playlist or source transition. Make sure the next item begins without leaving the encoder with no active video feed.
- Test the handoff. Check the stream in YouTube’s Live Control Room as the clip ends, and confirm that video continues to arrive.
- Review auto-stop in YouTube Studio. Choose whether YouTube should end the broadcast when the encoder feed stops. This setting is separate from looping and does not substitute for an ongoing feed.
YouTube supports streaming through an encoder, subject to channel eligibility requirements; its Get started with live streaming page explains the available methods and requirements.

Diagnose the failure by what you see
- The video and encoder feed stop at the same time: the playback source likely reached the end without looping or moving to another source. Configure repeat or a continuous playlist.
- The encoder appears active, but YouTube no longer receives video: check the encoder’s output and stream-key configuration, then look at the Live Control Room for the current feed status. YouTube’s API documentation distinguishes stream status from broadcast lifecycle (Understanding Broadcasts and Streams; Life of a Broadcast).
- YouTube ends the broadcast after the feed stops: auto-stop may be enabled. Review the setting, but remember that changing it will not make the source play again.
- The feed continues but the broadcast is marked complete: check the broadcast and stream states in Live Control Room. A completed broadcast is a lifecycle state, not a playback-loop setting. YouTube notes that a completed broadcast is converted to a video, and that it may take time to become available afterward (LiveStreams).
Reconnect behavior and recovery time depend on the encoder and configuration; there is no single recovery window that applies to every setup. If you need an unattended 24/7 broadcast, the essential requirement remains an ongoing encoder feed. YouTube describes 24/7 broadcasts as a scenario in which video transmission continues while a separate broadcast is completed (Understanding Broadcasts and Streams).
