How to Automate an OBS 24/7 Stream with Advanced Scene Switcher

Advanced Scene Switcher can automate OBS using macros: you define conditions—such as a time, scene, or media event—and the actions OBS should take when they apply. You can use it to schedule stream actions, sequence scenes, or respond to media completion. It does not, by itself, keep a stream online through a computer shutdown, power or network failure, or every YouTube disconnect; test the complete setup before relying on it unattended.

What Advanced Scene Switcher can automate

The plugin organizes automation into macros that pair conditions with actions. Depending on the workflow, a macro can use a date/time or schedule, a scene or media state, or a streaming-related condition or action. This makes it useful for planned start and stop actions and for scene sequences tied to events.

Scheduling an action is not the same as ensuring OBS launches after a reboot or recovers from every outage. The available plugin documentation describes macro scheduling and actions, not a guarantee of end-to-end 24/7 uptime.

Check compatibility and protect your setup

The OBS Resources listing currently identifies Advanced Scene Switcher version 1.36.1, supports Windows, macOS, and Linux, and specifies OBS Studio 31.1.1 as the minimum version. These requirements are version-sensitive; check the listing and release notes before installing or updating. The plugin’s release notes recommend backing up settings, so save a copy of your OBS profile and scene collection before making changes.

After installation, open the plugin’s dock or settings and confirm the installed version’s controls. Exact labels can change between releases; use the plugin’s current help or release notes rather than assuming a field name from an older walkthrough.

Prepare OBS before adding automation

  1. Configure the stream in OBS. Select the streaming service and server, then enter the stream key supplied by the service. Keep the key private. OBS explains that your chosen bitrate must suit both your upload speed and the platform’s limits; a scheduled macro cannot compensate for an unsuitable bitrate or unstable connection. See the OBS streaming guide.
  2. Build the scenes and sources. Add the media, overlays, and other sources you intend to use. Preview each scene and verify that audio and video behave as expected before connecting any triggers.
  3. Test a manual broadcast first. OBS recommends checking settings, scene changes, and stream smoothness before a first live stream. Confirm the stream works manually before you make it depend on a macro.

Create a macro for the action you need

  1. Choose a clear trigger. In Advanced Scene Switcher, create a macro and select a condition that matches the event: for example, a date/time or scheduled macro for a planned action, or a scene, media, or streaming condition for an event-driven workflow.
  2. Add only the intended action. Choose the action that should follow the condition, such as a scene change or a streaming action available in your installed release. Keep each macro focused so it is easier to understand and troubleshoot.
  3. Set its repeat or change behavior deliberately. The interface offers options for how a macro responds to conditions, including repeating or acting when a condition changes. Select the behavior that matches the task and verify it with a controlled test; the correct choice depends on the trigger and action.
  4. Run the macro through its full sequence. Check that the condition becomes true when expected, that the action occurs once or repeats as intended, and that later steps do not conflict with other macros.

Use media completion to move to another scene or stop

A finite video can be part of an event-driven sequence: a community OBS forum example describes configuring a media source to switch to another scene when playback ends, then using a scene trigger to stop streaming. Treat this as a pattern to configure and test in your own scene collection, not as a guaranteed recipe or official reliability promise. Verify what happens when the media is restarted, interrupted, or fails to load, as well as what happens at the end of normal playback. See the OBS forum discussion.

Test the unattended workflow and its failure cases

Before leaving a stream unattended, test the chain from the planned trigger to the final action. Include the cases that matter to your setup:

  • Does OBS remain open and does the macro run at the intended time?
  • Do scene transitions, media playback, and audio work in the expected order?
  • Does a stop action end the broadcast only when intended?
  • What happens if the connection drops, OBS freezes, the computer reboots, or power is lost?

Do not assume the plugin will relaunch OBS after a reboot or recover from those failures. The available documentation does not establish those guarantees. The release history records prior shutdown and freeze fixes, which is another reason to use a current compatible release and test your own configuration.

When OBS WebSocket is relevant

OBS WebSocket is built into OBS Studio 28 and later. It is an optional interface for remote control by compatible clients, not a requirement for local macro scheduling. If you enable it, OBS strongly recommends protecting it with a password against unauthorized control. See the OBS remote-control guide.
