To play several videos one after another in OBS, add a VLC Video source to your scene, put the files in its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. You can keep the playlist in its listed order or enable Shuffle Playlist for randomized playback.
Before you start: install VLC
OBS uses VLC for its VLC Video source. If VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu, install VLC and reopen OBS. Match the architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. VLC Video is the OBS source intended for a playlist of multiple media files.
Add a multi-video playlist to an OBS scene
- Open the scene. In OBS, select the scene that should show the videos. If you use different scenes during the stream, decide which scene should contain the playlist.
- Add the source. In the Sources dock, click + and choose VLC Video. Give the source a recognizable name if OBS asks, then open its properties.
- Add the files. In the VLC Video properties, add the media files you want in the playlist. Arrange them in the order you want them to play if you are not using shuffle.
- Choose playback order. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play items in list order. Turn it on to randomize playback.
- Repeat the full list. Enable Loop Playlist. When the final item finishes, OBS starts the playlist again from the beginning. OBS documents this as the default, but check the setting rather than assuming it is on.
- Set behavior when the source is hidden. Choose whether playback stops and restarts, pauses and resumes, or continues while hidden. If you switch scenes, this setting determines what happens to the playlist while its source is not visible.
VLC Video or Media Source?
Use the source that matches what you need to repeat. The standard Media Source is for a media file in a scene and has a Loop setting for replaying that file. VLC Video supports multiple playlist items, with controls for looping the playlist and shuffling its order.
Check the playlist before leaving OBS unattended
- Play through the whole list at least once. Confirm each file loads and has the expected picture and audio.
- Let the last item finish and verify that the playlist starts again as expected.
- If you use scene changes, test what happens when the VLC Video source becomes hidden and visible again.
- Check the actual OBS stream and the platform playback, not just the preview in OBS.
- Use video and audio files that your system can play reliably, and test the specific files you intend to stream. OBS lists formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF, and WebM for Media Source, and MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV for audio; that list does not guarantee every codec or file will behave identically on every system.
If you use network media rather than local files, VLC Video exposes a Network Caching setting; OBS documents 400 ms as its default. That setting is not a guarantee of reliable network playback. VLC Video also provides audio-track and subtitle controls; subtitles are off by default.

A looping playlist automates playback, but it does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. OBS documentation describes the source controls, not continuous operation through power loss, network interruptions, software updates, or every codec and operating-system issue. Make sure you have the rights to stream every video and any music it contains, and check the platform’s applicable rules before broadcasting.
Common problems and fixes
- VLC Video is not in the Sources menu: Install VLC, make sure its architecture matches OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC), then reopen OBS.
- The videos play once and stop: Open the VLC Video properties and enable Loop Playlist.
- The playlist plays in an unexpected order: Turn off Shuffle Playlist for list order, then review the order of the files in the playlist.
- Playback changes when you switch scenes: Check the source’s visibility behavior. Select the stop/restart, pause/resume, or continue-while-hidden behavior that matches how you use scenes.
- A file has missing or unexpected audio, subtitles, or video: Test that file on the actual streaming setup. Check the VLC Video audio-track and subtitle controls, and confirm the file plays as expected before relying on it unattended.
- The playlist works locally but the live stream does not: Check OBS output and the platform’s playback separately, then test the full playlist again. A successful preview does not establish that the stream will remain online continuously.
Or let it run in the cloud
