How to Keep a YouTube Live Stream Running After the First Video Ends

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To keep a YouTube live stream running after its first video ends, loop the video in your encoder—not on the YouTube watch page. In OBS, enable Loop on a Media Source for one file, or use a VLC Video source with Loop Playlist for multiple files. Keep the encoder connected and sending valid audio and video, and check YouTube Studio’s auto-stop setting so the event does not end when the encoder stops.

Why the stream ends when the video ends

YouTube receives the live feed from your encoder, such as OBS. The encoder must continue sending valid video and audio; the YouTube watch page does not replay a finished upload to keep the event alive. Looping the media source makes the encoder continue producing content, but it does not prevent a separate encoder or network failure.

YouTube’s encoder setup guide puts it plainly: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

Set up a looping stream in OBS

  1. Create or select the YouTube encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live. Create or select the stream, then copy its stream URL and stream key into OBS. Treat the key as a password: anyone who has it may be able to send content to your stream. YouTube’s setup guide explains the encoder details and key handling at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  2. For one video, add a Media Source. In OBS, add a Media Source, select the video file, and enable Loop in the source’s settings. Make sure the source remains visible in the active scene. OBS documents Media Source playback controls, including looping, in its Media Sources guide.
  3. For multiple videos, use a VLC Video source. Install VLC, add a VLC Video source in OBS, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed for this OBS source type. See OBS’s Media Sources guide for the source controls.
  4. Check YouTube’s event behavior. In the Live Control Room, review the stream’s auto-start and auto-stop settings. YouTube describes these controls as ways to start or stop streaming from the encoder; avoid a setup that ends the event when the encoder stops if you want the event to remain available.
  5. Preview and test before going public. Start OBS and confirm the preview appears in the Live Control Room. YouTube recommends previewing the stream and testing the setup. Use an unlisted test stream and let the file reach its end: confirm the video restarts or advances and that the event remains live. Guidance is in YouTube Help: Stream live with an encoder.
  6. Monitor the broadcast. Check stream health, picture, and audio while it runs. If the video loops but the event ends, troubleshoot the encoder output, connection, and auto-stop behavior separately; the media loop only controls playback.

Choose a single file or a playlist

Setup Best for Playback behavior Requirement
OBS Media Source Repeating one video Loops the selected file OBS and a local video file
OBS VLC Video source Rotating several files Cycles the playlist when Loop Playlist is enabled OBS, VLC installed, and a playlist

The OBS knowledge-base article is dated January 11, 2022; controls may look different in newer OBS versions. The source settings, rather than the YouTube event page, determine whether the media repeats.

What to know about long streams, archives, and DVR

Automatic archive capture

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured, so do not rely on the YouTube archive for a longer broadcast; make a local recording if you need a dependable copy. See YouTube’s encoder stream guide.

DVR and rewind

DVR lets viewers pause, rewind, and resume a live stream. YouTube says rewind may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. Disabling DVR removes backward seeking during the live broadcast, though a recording may still be available afterward. See YouTube Help: Enable DVR on live streams.

Handing viewers to another event

If you plan to end the current stream and send viewers to a Premiere or another live stream, YouTube Live Redirect can make that handoff. It does not keep the same event running. YouTube advises setting up the Premiere first and telling viewers to wait about two seconds for their screens to reload. Details: YouTube Help: Use Live Redirect.
