How to Set Up FFmpeg to Loop Podcast Episodes on YouTube Live in India

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop a podcast episode on YouTube Live, enable encoder streaming in YouTube Studio, copy your stream’s RTMPS URL and key, then run FFmpeg with -stream_loop -1 before the input file’s -i option. The loop command is the same in India as elsewhere; use the URL and key shown for your own stream, and test the picture, sound and upload connection before broadcasting.

What you need before you start

  • A verified YouTube channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current guidance also requires creators to be at least 16 to livestream. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance describes these requirements.
  • A podcast file containing the audio and a video or still-image track. The example below assumes both are in one MP4 file.
  • A computer with an FFmpeg build that supports the codecs and RTMPS output you intend to use, plus a stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen bitrate.
  • The stream URL and stream key for the stream you create in YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, expose it in screenshots, or leave it in shared logs.

Create a YouTube encoder stream and copy its credentials

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live.
  2. Create a stream or schedule one, then open its stream settings in Live Control Room.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key exactly as shown. Prefer the RTMPS URL. YouTube may show a regular RTMP URL by default; follow YouTube’s RTMPS instructions to reveal the secure URL if needed.
  4. Keep Live Control Room open so you can check the incoming preview and stream health after starting FFmpeg.

The URL and key are specific to your stream. YouTube’s ingest documentation describes the combined form as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; depending on the encoder and how Live Control Room presents the credentials, the key may be appended to the server URL or entered separately. Use the exact values and format required by your encoder rather than guessing an endpoint. See the YouTube Live Streaming API ingest overview.

Run FFmpeg with the episode set to loop

For a single MP4 containing both the podcast audio and its visuals, use this as a starting command. Replace the output placeholder with the actual RTMPS URL and stream key, taking care not to share the completed command publicly.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "episode.mp4"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -b:v 8M -minrate 8M -maxrate 8M -bufsize 16M -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR-INGEST-URL:443/YOUR-STREAM-KEY"

What the key options do

  • -re reads the file at its native rate instead of sending it as quickly as FFmpeg can process it. It is appropriate when publishing a file as a live stream.
  • -stream_loop -1 is an input option: it tells FFmpeg to repeat that input indefinitely. It must appear before the corresponding -i.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0 selects the first video and first audio streams from input 0. Change the mapping if the file’s streams are laid out differently.
  • -c:v libx264 and -c:a aac encode H.264 video and AAC audio. -preset veryfast trades some compression efficiency for less encoding work. Re-encoding can normalize output settings but uses CPU.
  • -b:v, -minrate, and -maxrate set the video rate target and bounds; -bufsize sets the rate-control buffer. -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, which is a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps.
  • -f flv selects the RTMP-family output format used for the ingest connection.

YouTube recommends H.264, HEVC or AV1 video, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. Its current H.264 recommendation for 720p30 is 8 Mbps. The sample uses that bitrate but does not scale or frame-rate-convert the input to 720p30; inspect the file and align resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval with the current YouTube encoder settings. This command is a template, not a tested configuration for every file or FFmpeg build.

  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check the file before using the map

Inspect the input with a media probe such as ffprobe and confirm which streams contain the intended picture and podcast audio. If there is no video track, provide a visual input, such as a still image, and map that video stream. If there is no audio track, the file cannot supply the intended podcast audio. Do not copy the example’s stream mapping blindly when the file layout differs.

Verify the stream, then leave it running

  1. Run the command and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room.
  2. Confirm that both picture and sound are present and that the audio is intelligible. Test representative sections, including any transitions or changes in loudness.
  3. Check YouTube’s stream health and any warning messages while live. Confirm that your internet connection can sustain the selected upload bitrate; higher-resolution or higher-bitrate output needs more upload capacity.
  4. To stop, interrupt FFmpeg and use the appropriate Live Control Room controls for your stream type. For an immediate stream, YouTube says to stop sending content from the encoder to end it.

What is different about streaming from India?

The sourced YouTube encoder workflow does not identify a special India-only FFmpeg option or ingestion protocol. Use the RTMPS URL and key generated for your own stream in Live Control Room. Your local upload capacity and routing still matter, so test from the connection and location where you plan to broadcast. Mobile-live availability rules are separate from this computer-and-encoder workflow.

Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules

Looping a file does not give you the right to broadcast it. Make sure you have permission for the podcast recording and for any music, clips, artwork or other third-party material it contains. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches; it may show a placeholder, interrupt the stream or terminate it. Even licensed material may require the rights holder to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance before using third-party content.

Troubleshooting common FFmpeg and YouTube Live problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
FFmpeg exits or reports that it cannot find a stream The file path is wrong, the input is unavailable, or the requested audio/video stream does not exist. Check the filename and path, then inspect the file’s streams. Adjust the -map options to match the actual audio and video tracks.
YouTube receives sound but no picture, or picture but no sound The file lacks the expected track or the command maps the wrong stream. Inspect the input’s stream layout and select the intended video and audio tracks. A file without video needs a separate visual source; a file without audio cannot provide the podcast audio.
SSL or connection error The output URL may be the regular RTMP address, incorrectly copied, or unsupported by the FFmpeg build. Verify that you copied the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. YouTube’s RTMPS guidance notes port 443 for SSL errors; use the port and address YouTube provides.
Stream health warns about bitrate or instability The selected bitrate may exceed the connection’s sustained upload capacity, or output settings may not match the source and YouTube recommendations. Check the connection and stream-health messages. Choose a reliable output quality and align bitrate, resolution and frame rate with YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
The broadcast is interrupted after a copyright match The stream contains material that YouTube identifies as belonging to a third party. Use material you have the rights to stream. If a rights holder has licensed it to you, ask whether the channel needs to be allowlisted in Content ID.
