To rotate two podcast playlists on one YouTube live stream, combine their episode files in a single OBS Studio VLC Video source playlist, arrange them in the order you want, turn on Loop Playlist, and leave Shuffle Playlist off. For an alternating sequence, arrange files A1, B1, A2, B2, and so on. OBS documents looping and shuffle for one playlist, not automatic alternation between two separate named playlists.
How the rotation works
OBS sends one encoded audio-video output to one YouTube live broadcast. The two podcast collections become one playback queue: you control the sequence by placing each episode file in the desired order. When the queue reaches its end, Loop Playlist starts it again.
This approach is best when the rotation is predictable and can be prepared in advance. If you need timed changes or frequent episode insertions without rebuilding the queue, a more automated scheduling setup may be worth considering; the documented workflow here does not require a third-party scheduling service.
Prepare the episode files and rotation
- Confirm rights first. Use only episodes and other material the channel is authorized to stream. A podcast being publicly available on YouTube does not by itself grant rebroadcast rights.
- Choose the sequence. For two alternating shows, make a sequence such as A1, B1, A2, B2. For a block rotation, put all episodes from Show A first and then all episodes from Show B. The playlist order determines the playback order.
- Keep an inventory. Check each file against the intended sequence so that additions, omissions, or duplicate episodes are easy to spot before going live.
Set up the combined playlist in OBS
Install VLC and add a VLC Video source
OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. OBS lists the source for Windows, macOS, and Linux. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. In the scene you will stream, add a VLC Video source and populate its playlist with the episode files in your planned order. Check the OBS preview to confirm the source is visible, and verify that its audio reaches the stream mix.

Set looping and shuffle
- Turn on Loop Playlist so playback begins again after the final file.
- Leave Shuffle Playlist off for a fixed A/B rotation. Shuffle randomizes the file order, so it will not preserve the sequence you arranged.
These playlist controls are described in the OBS Media Sources guide. Before scheduling the broadcast, play through enough of the queue to check the file order, transitions, picture, and audio.
Schedule the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room, choose Manage, and schedule a stream. Scheduling creates a watch page that viewers can share and lets them set reminders.
- Open the scheduled broadcast’s stream settings and copy its server URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open the streaming settings and enter the YouTube server URL and stream key. Keep the key private; it lets an encoder send video to the channel.
- Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the encoder preview to appear in Live Control Room, check that picture and sound are correct, then select Go live.
YouTube’s encoder setup guidance covers scheduling, connecting an encoder, previewing, and going live. In YouTube’s API terminology, a liveStream resource carries encoder transmission settings, while a liveBroadcast resource represents the event; for the ordinary Studio workflow, select the intended scheduled broadcast and use its URL and key in OBS.

Protect the stream from rights problems
YouTube says live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content. If a match is detected, YouTube may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the streamer; if the material remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a live stream. See YouTube’s live-streaming copyright guidance.
If you have a license for third-party material, do not assume the license alone prevents interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may also need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm the clearance and allowlisting arrangements before scheduling a rebroadcast.

Plan the broadcast length and archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If the replay matters, plan the programming window to stay below that duration; do not assume the same archive behavior for a longer stream. Check YouTube’s encoder help page for its current guidance.
Common problems and fixes
- The episodes do not alternate as expected: Check the single VLC playlist’s order. Two separately maintained playlists are not automatically interleaved by this workflow; add files in the intended A/B sequence.
- The same episode order changes between plays: Turn off Shuffle Playlist to retain the sequence you arranged.
- Playback stops after the last episode: Enable Loop Playlist.
- The VLC source is missing or unavailable: Install VLC. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
- The source appears in OBS but stream audio is absent: Check that the VLC source is visible in the active scene and that its audio is routed to the stream mix.
- YouTube does not show an encoder preview: Confirm that OBS is using the scheduled broadcast’s server URL and stream key, then check the connection in Live Control Room before selecting Go live.
- The stream is interrupted after starting: Check for third-party-content matches and unresolved rights or allowlisting issues; YouTube may interrupt or terminate streams that trigger enforcement.
