How to Schedule Podcast Episodes to Play in Order on a YouTube Live Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To play podcast episodes in a chosen order during a YouTube livestream, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, then arrange the episode files in an OBS Studio VLC Video source. Turn off Shuffle Playlist, choose whether playback should loop, connect OBS with the scheduled stream’s URL and key, check the preview, and start the event.

What you need before you schedule

  • A computer that can access the episode files and run OBS Studio while streaming.
  • OBS Studio and VLC installed. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC; for 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
  • Podcast episode files that play correctly. OBS documents formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, MP3, AAC, OGG, and WAV.
  • A YouTube channel set up to livestream and the episode order you want to use.

YouTube scheduling creates the event; it does not arrange or play the episode files. The ordered playlist is configured in OBS.

Build the episode playlist in OBS

  1. Check the files and sequence. Put the media files somewhere the streaming computer can access them. Play each file and decide the exact order before adding them.
  2. Add a VLC Video source. In the OBS scene you plan to stream, add a VLC Video source. If that source is unavailable, check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
  3. Add the episodes in order. In the source’s playlist settings, add the files in the sequence you want viewers to hear and see. Keep Shuffle Playlist off; otherwise, playback may not follow the chosen order.
  4. Choose what happens after the last episode. Loop Playlist is enabled by default in the documented VLC source settings. Leave it on if the sequence should start again after the final file, or turn it off if playback should stop after one pass.
  5. Check the scene. Confirm the source is visible and that the episode’s video and audio are present. If your episodes are audio-only, arrange the scene accordingly so it does not show an unintended blank or unrelated image.

Schedule the YouTube livestream

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go live → Manage → Schedule stream.
  2. Reuse settings from an earlier stream or create a new event. Set the event details and schedule it for the intended time.
  3. After creating the event, open it in Live Control Room and copy its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as private: anyone with it may be able to send video to your stream.
  4. Share the scheduled event link if you want viewers to find it ahead of time. Scheduled streams can appear as upcoming to subscribers, who may choose Notify me.

Connect OBS, preview, and go live

  1. In OBS, open the stream settings and enter the URL and key for the scheduled YouTube event. Make sure you use the credentials for this event rather than an unrelated stream.
  2. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the incoming feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room; sending from OBS does not, by itself, mean the public event has started.
  3. Check the preview before going live. Verify the right scene, episode, picture, and audio are present, and monitor the stream’s status and quality.
  4. When the preview is correct and you are ready for viewers, click Go live in Live Control Room. Keep monitoring playback and stream quality while the playlist runs.
  5. To finish, end the event in YouTube and stop sending from the encoder according to YouTube’s encoder workflow.

Decide whether to loop or end

The key playlist choice is whether the sequence should repeat. With Loop Playlist on, OBS returns to the beginning after the final episode. With it off, the playlist makes one pass and stops at the end. In either case, keep shuffle disabled when a fixed episode order matters.

YouTube’s latency setting trades lower delay against a greater chance of playback buffering. For a prerecorded playlist, it is usually a secondary decision; choose it based on how much live interaction matters and monitor the stream after launch.

Recording and copyright considerations

YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived and can be found in the Live tab in Studio. This is a platform condition, not a guarantee that every stream will be available in every circumstance.

Use episode audio, video, artwork, and any music only when you have the necessary rights or permission. A livestream can be interrupted or subject to claims if its content violates YouTube’s rules or rights holders’ policies. Review the copyright safety checklist before streaming material you did not create or license.

Troubleshooting

  • VLC Video is missing in OBS: Install VLC and restart OBS. If OBS is 64-bit, use 64-bit VLC.
  • Episodes play in the wrong order: Reopen the source playlist, check the item sequence, and ensure Shuffle Playlist is off.
  • The playlist starts again unexpectedly: Turn off Loop Playlist if you want playback to end after the final episode.
  • YouTube is not receiving video: Confirm OBS is streaming, and check that the URL and key match the scheduled event. Wait for the feed to appear in Live Control Room before selecting Go live.
  • The preview has the wrong image or no sound: Check the selected OBS scene and source, then test the episode file’s playback and audio before starting the public event.
  • Playback buffers or quality is poor: Monitor YouTube’s stream status and the encoder output. YouTube’s latency choice involves a tradeoff between delay and the likelihood of buffering; it does not fix an incorrect playlist or missing source.
