You can try a continuous fireplace stream with OBS on a modest PC, but no single setting guarantees 24/7 operation. Start with one simple scene, 720p at 30 fps, H.264 and a stable bitrate your upload connection can sustain. Run a controlled test and adjust based on OBS’s actual performance before relying on it. Your hardware, internet connection and power supply determine whether the setup can keep running.
What you need to check first
Before choosing quality settings, note your operating system, CPU, RAM, graphics hardware and available upload speed. In OBS, check whether a hardware H.264 encoder is available. The label “low-end PC” alone does not tell you whether a particular setup can stream: OBS says compatible system requirements do not guarantee streaming or recording capability, and performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. See the OBS system requirements.
- Install and open OBS Studio, then run Tools > Auto-Configuration Wizard. Choose the option for streaming and follow the prompts. OBS uses your intended use, hardware resources and network conditions to suggest a starting configuration; treat it as a starting point, not a guarantee. See the OBS Quick Start Guide.
- In YouTube Studio, enable live streaming for your channel if it is not already enabled. Follow YouTube’s current prompts and allow for any channel eligibility or activation steps shown there.
- Make a private or unlisted test broadcast before publishing. Check the preview, audio, stream health and OBS statistics while it runs. YouTube recommends testing before going live; the controlled test helps reveal problems specific to your PC and connection.
Build a lightweight fireplace scene
Use one scene with only the fireplace video and any audio you actually need. A static or slowly moving scene is a practical fit for a weak machine, but the media source still needs to play reliably. Avoid unnecessary browser overlays, multiple full-screen media sources and costly filters. OBS notes that sources can consume resources even when they are not visible, and browser sources and filters can be demanding. Its encoding performance troubleshooting guide explains how to respond when rendering or encoding cannot keep up.
- Use an original or properly licensed fireplace video and audio. Confirm that you have rights to both before streaming.
- Keep the scene and source count low; remove elements that do not improve the broadcast.
- Watch OBS’s status and statistics during the test. If you see encoding overload or stuttering, simplify the scene and lower output resolution or frame rate before adding anything else.
Starting OBS settings for a 24/7 test
For a relatively static fireplace scene, begin with the modest, testable target below. YouTube’s encoder guide recommends H.264, CBR and a 2-second keyframe interval, and lists 8 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. That 8 Mbps figure is YouTube’s platform recommendation, not a requirement for every connection or a promise that an Indian home upload can sustain it. OBS advises setting bitrate with stable upload capacity in mind.

| Setting | Starting point | How to tune it |
|---|---|---|
| Output resolution | 1280 × 720 | If the PC struggles, try a lower output resolution. This reduces encoder work but also reduces picture detail. |
| Frame rate | 30 fps | Prefer 30 fps over 60 fps if the machine cannot keep up; fewer frames reduce work per second. |
| Video encoder | H.264, using a hardware encoder if available and stable, or x264 | Do not choose solely from the “low-end” label. Hardware encoding can reduce CPU encoding work, while OBS notes that dedicated hardware encoders can trade off quality per bitrate compared with x264 in many cases. Test the option your machine handles best. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube’s encoder recommendations specify constant bitrate for this streaming setup. |
| Bitrate | Set from measured, stable upload; use 8 Mbps only if testing shows your connection can sustain YouTube’s 720p30 recommendation | OBS suggests starting at 75% of total upload speed, then reducing bitrate if the connection drops frames or disconnects. A lower bitrate can reduce image quality; evaluate the picture and connection together. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | This matches YouTube’s recommended interval. |
| Audio | Stereo AAC if your scene uses audio | Check the audio in the test; mute or remove tracks you do not intend to broadcast. |
| Connection protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection to its servers. |
YouTube’s settings table is at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. For upload-related dropped frames, see OBS’s Stream Connection Troubleshooting. OBS’s x264 article gives a separate 3,000–5,000 kbps starting range for 720p30 under its stated x264 veryfast and low-to-medium-motion assumptions. It is not interchangeable with YouTube’s 8 Mbps recommendation: the sources use different assumptions. Test rather than treating either figure as universally correct. See OBS’s x264 guidance.
Leave YouTube’s automatic resolution detection in place unless you have a reason to set a custom stream resolution. If reducing output resolution does not solve overload, lower frame rate or simplify the scene further. Lowering the base canvas resolution is a more disruptive step because you may need to resize and reposition scene elements.

Make the connection and PC more dependable
Prefer Ethernet when practical
Connect the PC to the router by Ethernet if you can. OBS warns that Wi-Fi may be unstable for streaming. If Wi-Fi is your only option, test from the PC’s actual location and at different times; congestion or route changes can affect performance. If frames continue to drop, reduce bitrate, check the router, modem and network drivers, and contact your ISP if the problem appears to be beyond the PC. A cable is useful only if the PC and router have Ethernet ports and it can reach; it cannot compensate for insufficient stable upload speed.
Watch for load, heat and power issues
Observe the PC during a sustained test for stuttering, encoding overload, unexpected shutdowns or other instability. The provided official guidance does not establish a universal CPU or RAM threshold, safe temperature, UPS runtime or electricity cost for a 24/7 stream. Whether your specific computer can run for days depends on its hardware, condition, surroundings and power supply; test your own setup rather than assuming it will stay online.

Plan separately for the live broadcast and its replay
A continuous live stream and a complete saved replay are different goals. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. It recommends making a local backup recording. If preserving the full broadcast matters, test OBS local recording and check that you have enough storage; recording adds machine workload and uses disk space. Do not assume that dividing a continuous broadcast into segments guarantees a complete archive or uninterrupted playback. Check current behavior in your own channel. See YouTube’s archive live streams guidance.
Copyright and monetization are separate checks
Use footage and sound you created or are authorized to use. Permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are not the same question. YouTube’s monetization policy, updated July 15, 2025, says repetitive or mass-produced material falls under its “inauthentic content” policy and is ineligible under the existing policy. An endlessly repeated fireplace clip or music loop is therefore not assured monetizable content, even if you have permission to use it. YouTube assesses individual channels and content; this guide cannot predict that decision. Read YouTube channel monetization policies.

Troubleshoot common problems
| What you see | Likely issue | What to try |
|---|---|---|
| Encoding overload or choppy video | The encoder or scene cannot keep up with the selected output settings. | Remove unnecessary sources and filters. Reduce output resolution or frame rate; if 60 fps is in use, test 30 fps. Compare available hardware encoding with x264 on your system. |
| Dropped frames or a disconnected stream | The connection may not sustain the bitrate, or Wi-Fi, network equipment, drivers, ISP congestion or routing may be affecting it. | Use Ethernet if practical. Lower bitrate, retest upload stability, check the router/modem and network drivers, and contact your ISP if the issue persists beyond the PC. Follow OBS’s connection troubleshooting steps. |
| Video looks too soft after lowering bitrate or resolution | The reduced data rate or pixel count leaves less detail. | Test the fireplace scene at a bitrate your stable upload can handle, then raise quality only while OBS and YouTube stream health remain stable. |
| Broadcast stays live but replay is missing or incomplete | YouTube may not capture a stream that exceeds 12 hours. | Use and test a local recording backup if retaining the full program matters; verify current archive behavior in YouTube Studio. |
| Stream stops after a power or PC problem | A local OBS stream depends on the PC, power and internet connection remaining available. | Check which part failed and test the whole setup again. A local configuration cannot guarantee continuous uptime. |
