First compare OBS’s program output with the preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room. If the wrong episode is already visible in OBS, check the active scene, source visibility and order, and the media file or playlist settings. If OBS shows the right episode but YouTube does not, inspect YouTube’s stream-health messages and confirm you are viewing the intended live event. YouTube’s health tools can help diagnose delivery and encoding problems, but they do not identify which episode OBS was meant to play.
Find where the mismatch begins
OBS builds its output from scenes and sources; YouTube receives that output as a stream. Compare the OBS program output—not just a source’s properties window—with the YouTube Live Control Room preview. OBS’s guide explains how scenes and sources determine what appears in the composed output: OBS Sources Guide.
- Wrong in OBS and YouTube: Start with OBS’s active scene, source visibility and layering, and the playback source’s file or playlist.
- Right in OBS, wrong in YouTube: Check that the Control Room is showing the intended scheduled or live event, then review its health indicator and timestamped messages.
- Only audio, title, thumbnail, or replay seems wrong: Identify which element differs. A video-source check will not explain a title or thumbnail mismatch, and a live preview discrepancy is different from a replay or archive discrepancy.
This comparison is a practical way to narrow the cause; OBS and YouTube do not document a dedicated “wrong podcast episode” diagnostic.
If OBS itself shows the wrong episode
Confirm the active scene and source layering
- In OBS, check which scene is active for the live program output.
- In that scene’s Sources list, confirm the intended episode source is visible using its eye icon.
- Check the order of sources. A source higher in the list can appear over and obscure one below it; hide or move the covering source if appropriate.
- If you use scene transitions or switch scenes during the show, verify the intended scene is the one that remains active after the transition.

Check a local Media Source
If the episode is loaded as an OBS Media Source, open that source’s properties and verify the selected file. Then inspect its playback controls. OBS documents “Restart playback when source becomes active” as on by default and “Loop” as off by default; a source configured differently from your intended workflow can restart or stop at unexpected times. The “Close file when inactive” option can unload a hidden or inactive source, which may cause a short reload when it becomes visible again. See OBS Media Sources for the documented controls.
Check a VLC playlist
If you use VLC Video, confirm the intended episode is actually in the playlist and inspect its order and shuffle setting. OBS documents playlist looping as on by default and shuffle as off by default. If the sequence is unexpected, turn shuffle off and arrange the files in the intended order. VLC Video requires VLC to be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. The available controls are described in OBS Media Sources.

Check capture sources
If the episode comes from a browser, application window, or display capture rather than a media source, verify the captured window or tab is the one playing the intended episode. Confirm it has not navigated to another page, changed tabs, or been covered by another visible source in OBS. These are source-selection checks, not a YouTube stream-health issue.
If OBS is right but YouTube is wrong
In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, inspect the stream’s health indicator and any timestamped error messages beside it. YouTube’s live streaming error messages cover ingestion and configuration problems such as format, codec, bitrate, sample rate, channel count, video settings, and keyframes. These diagnostics can help explain a stream that is not being received or encoded as expected; they do not reveal which media file OBS selected.

Make sure the Control Room preview belongs to the same scheduled or live broadcast whose stream key OBS is using. If the issue appears only in the recording or replay after the stream, distinguish that from what was actually shown in the live preview before changing OBS playback settings.
When API health details may help
If you use YouTube’s Live Streaming API or have access to its health status, it can report configuration issues including missing or multiple audio or video streams, codecs, bitrates, frame rate, and keyframe frequency. Those details are useful for stream configuration—not for identifying the intended episode. See Google’s Live Streaming API health-status documentation (updated September 14, 2026).

What to record if it still happens
Before changing several settings at once, capture the details that locate the failure:
- OBS version and operating system.
- The active scene and source type: Media Source, VLC playlist, browser, window, or display capture.
- Whether the wrong content is video, audio, title, thumbnail, or replay.
- Whether the OBS program output and YouTube preview match at the same time.
- For a playlist, its order and shuffle state; for a Media Source, the selected file and relevant playback options.
- The timestamp and wording of any YouTube stream-health message.
This helps separate a content-selection problem from a received-stream configuration problem. An OBS issue report from 2022 described an intermittent audio disagreement while switching scenes in OBS 28.1.2 on Windows 10, but that individual report does not establish a general or current cause for a wrong-episode symptom: OBS issue #7879.
