The schedule is an on-screen overlay—not a pinned chat message—so viewers can see it in the stream and its playback.
What you need—and what each part does
YouTube Studio creates the live event and provides its watch page; an encoder sends the audio and video feed to that event. In this workflow, OBS Studio is the encoder and also builds the on-screen scene. You need a computer running OBS, a suitable audio source for the podcast, and the schedule text or a page containing it. A camera is optional if the show is audio-only or uses artwork instead.
YouTube’s encoder instructions describe connecting audio equipment such as a microphone, while OBS supports microphone/audio inputs and text, browser, image, and video sources. An existing suitable microphone or audio setup may be enough; buying a new microphone is not a prerequisite. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions and the OBS Sources Guide.
Prepare a schedule people can read
Keep the scrolling copy concise: include the episode title, the segment currently on air, and a few upcoming segments or timestamps. Use consistent separators and check names and times before the broadcast. These are practical layout choices, not requirements imposed by YouTube or OBS.

Long lines take longer to pass and are harder to follow while moving. If the full rundown matters, consider showing only the current and next segments in the moving banner, then put the complete schedule in the video description or chat. Preview the schedule at the final stream size; make sure it does not obscure faces, show titles, or captions, and use clear contrast.
Schedule the YouTube live event
- Open YouTube Studio, select Create, then Go Live.
- Open Manage and schedule a stream. Enter the event details and choose the intended privacy setting.
- Use the scheduled event’s watch-page URL to promote the episode in advance. Keep the event open in Live Control Room for the encoder connection and preview.
YouTube says a first live stream may take up to 24 hours to become enabled. Check YouTube’s current eligibility and live-stream restrictions before the show, especially if the channel has not streamed before. The event is not the transmission itself: Studio creates the event, while OBS sends the program feed. See YouTube’s encoder streaming instructions and the YouTube Live Streaming API overview.
Build the podcast scene in OBS
- Create a scene for the podcast. Add the show’s microphone or other audio input, then add an optional camera, artwork, or other visual source. Arrange the sources so the schedule will have a clear area of the picture.
- For plain schedule copy, add an OBS Text source. You can type text directly or use a text file. For a custom design, add a Browser source and load a local file or web page containing the schedule.
- Position and size the schedule source in the scene. Leave enough space around it to avoid covering important visual elements.
OBS documents text and text-file inputs in its Text Sources guide; its Browser Source guide explains loading a web page or local file. A static panel may be preferable if the schedule is short and viewers need time to read it.

Make the schedule scroll in OBS
- Select the schedule source in the scene’s Sources list.
- Open the source’s Filters, add the Scroll filter, and choose horizontal or vertical movement.
- Adjust the direction and speed, then configure whether the source loops and whether to limit its width or height.
- Preview the full scene. Slow the movement if a viewer cannot comfortably read an item before it passes; there is no universal speed that suits every font, screen size, or amount of text.
OBS describes the filter as one that “Makes the Source image scroll in any direction” and identifies marquee text as one use. The direction, speed, and loop controls let you make a repeating banner or a limited scroll. Consult the OBS Scroll Filter documentation for the filter options.

- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the scheduled event and locate its stream URL and stream key.
- In OBS, open the stream settings and enter the YouTube stream URL and key, or select YouTube if OBS offers it as a service. Match the key to the scheduled event you intend to use.
- Start streaming in OBS. Wait for the incoming feed and preview to appear in Live Control Room.
- When the preview is ready and you want the event to begin, select Go live in Live Control Room. When the episode is over, end the broadcast through the Live Control Room and encoder workflow.
Check the current YouTube instructions for the Live Control Room interface and stream behavior; platform procedures can change. YouTube’s encoder guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but verify the current policy for your event rather than treating that threshold as a guarantee for every stream. Choose between a scrolling overlay, static panel, and chat pin

YouTube documents the pinning limits in its live chat moderation help. To place schedule text in the actual picture, use an OBS text or browser source and, if desired, the Scroll filter.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The schedule is not visible in the picture: Confirm the text or browser source is in the active scene, is not hidden behind another source, and is positioned inside the canvas.
- The schedule does not move: Check that the Scroll filter was added to the schedule source, not a different source, and that its direction and speed are set as intended.
- The text is too fast or hard to read: Reduce the speed, shorten the copy, increase text size or contrast, or switch to a static panel. Recheck it in the scene preview at the intended output size.
- The schedule is cut off or does not repeat as expected: Review the Scroll filter’s width or height limits and loop setting, then preview the result before starting the event.
- Live Control Room does not show an incoming preview: Check that OBS is streaming, that the stream URL and key belong to the scheduled event, and that the correct event is open in Studio.
- The channel cannot start its first live stream: YouTube says enabling a first live stream can take up to 24 hours. Check the channel’s current live eligibility and restrictions before relying on a same-day setup.
OBS recommends testing scenes and settings before a first stream. A preview check helps catch layout and connection issues, but it cannot guarantee a successful broadcast or substitute for checking YouTube’s current account requirements.
