To move from one podcast episode to the next without restarting your YouTube live stream, keep OBS connected to YouTube and change the media playing in the OBS scene. For an automatic sequence, use OBS’s VLC Video source with an ordered playlist; for manual selection, use separate Media Sources and switch which one is visible. YouTube receives the encoder feed, while OBS controls the media inside that feed.
What “queueing” means for a live stream
YouTube’s encoder workflow connects streaming software to the Live Control Room using a stream URL and stream key. The queue is therefore prepared in the encoder—in this guide, OBS—not in YouTube’s viewer watch queue. YouTube’s documentation covers the encoder connection and stream settings; OBS’s documentation covers local media playback and playlists (YouTube live-streaming overview; YouTube live-stream settings).
This workflow is for prerecorded episode files on a computer running OBS. It lets OBS change the scene’s media while its output remains connected, but it cannot guarantee that every computer, file, network connection, or source configuration will avoid buffering, stalling, or reconnecting.
Connect OBS to the YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or select an encoder-based stream and locate its stream URL and stream key.
- Connect OBS using the YouTube destination details. Enter the stream URL and key in OBS’s streaming settings, then start the OBS stream when you are ready. YouTube describes the key as the credential used by the encoder to send its feed.
- Keep the working key in place. Adding or changing episode sources does not require resetting the key. If you do reset it in YouTube, update OBS with the newly generated key or the encoder will no longer be using the matching connection details. See YouTube’s stream settings guidance.
Choose how to queue episodes in OBS
Option 1: Use a VLC Video source for an automatic playlist
- Install VLC if it is not already installed. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source to be available.
- Add the playlist source to the scene that feeds the stream. In OBS, add a VLC Video source and put the local episode files in the order you want them to play.
- Set playlist behavior. Leave shuffle off for sequential playback. Choose whether the playlist should loop if you want it to begin again after the last item.
- Check visibility and playback behavior. The VLC source’s settings determine how playback behaves when the source is hidden or becomes active. Set them for the transition you intend; hiding a source is not necessarily the same as ending playback.
- Start playback and confirm the intended episode order. If practical, verify the result in a private or unlisted test stream before using the playlist live.
OBS documents VLC Video as a multi-item playlist source, with playback and visibility settings that affect what happens when it is shown or hidden. The source may not appear until VLC is installed. See OBS Media Sources.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Option 2: Use individual Media Sources for manual selection
- Add a Media Source for each episode. OBS Media Sources can play local video and audio files; documented examples include MP4 and MP3.
- Place the sources in the scene that feeds the live output. Arrange them as needed, and make the intended episode source visible.
- Set restart behavior deliberately. A Media Source includes a “Restart playback when source becomes active” setting. Decide whether a source should begin again when shown or continue according to your setup.
- Switch episodes by changing source visibility. Hide the current episode and show the next one. Check whether playback continues, pauses, or stops while hidden, and whether reactivating a source restarts it.
- Keep OBS streaming while you change sources. The output connection is separate from which OBS source is visible, but a particular setup can still stall or reconnect. Test the transition and audio before relying on it live.
OBS explains adding, arranging, showing, and hiding sources in its Sources Guide; playback options are described in Media Sources.
Prepare a transition that does not interrupt the show
- Use files stored locally. This workflow is based on local episode files in OBS, rather than relying on a web player or YouTube’s viewer watch queue.
- Check the playlist order and source visibility. Confirm which source is visible at the start and what OBS should do when it becomes hidden or active.
- Listen as well as watch. Verify that the next episode’s audio is audible and that the outgoing source does not continue producing unwanted audio.
- Test the whole handoff where practical. A private or unlisted test can reveal an incorrect order, a source that restarts unexpectedly, or missing audio before a public stream.
- Do not treat the stream key as a queue control. It connects OBS to YouTube; episode order and playback are controlled by OBS sources.
YouTube’s and OBS’s documentation describe these separate roles, but do not promise that every configuration will change media without buffering or interruption. The exact controls for keeping an encoder output running can also differ by encoder; the playlist instructions here are specifically for OBS and local media.

Common problems and fixes
The VLC Video source is missing
Install VLC, then check OBS again. OBS states that VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to become available.
The playlist plays in the wrong order or repeats unexpectedly
Review the episode order in the VLC playlist, leave shuffle off for sequential playback, and check the loop setting to determine what happens after the last item.

An episode starts over when you switch back to it
Check the source’s “Restart playback when source becomes active” setting. Also review the VLC source’s visibility behavior if you are using a playlist; source activation and hiding can affect playback.
The episode changes, but the YouTube stream disconnects
Changing a source is not supposed to require a new stream key. Check whether OBS is still streaming and whether the encoder connection is active. If you reset the key in YouTube, put the new key into OBS. A source change alone is not proof of a key problem, and the cited documentation does not establish a universal no-reconnect guarantee.

The next episode has no sound or both episodes are audible
Check which sources are active and audible in the scene, then test the handoff again. Visibility and playback settings can affect source behavior; verify the audio before relying on the transition during a public stream.

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded podcast recordings without leaving a computer running at home, StreamNeo runs an always-on stream from the cloud. Upload recordings or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a live camera. It is an alternative for keeping prerecorded content running, rather than a control for switching individual episodes inside an existing OBS session.
