“All-night” stock trading is coming, but it will not be 24/7. Nasdaq plans to connect its existing sessions with overnight trading for five days a week, while NYSE Arca is pursuing a separate extended-hours launch. The practical changes are more time to place trades—and new questions about trade dates, broker access, liquidity and execution risk.
What are “global trading hours”?
Nasdaq uses “global trading hours” for a planned schedule covering 23 hours a day, five days a week. The schedule includes a one-hour daily pause for processing and the changeover to the next trade date. NYSE Arca has published a similar daily schedule for its extended-hours plan, but it is a separate exchange initiative.
| Venue | Published schedule (Eastern Time) | Weekly span and pause |
|---|---|---|
| Nasdaq | Early: 4:00–9:30 a.m.; core: 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.; late: 4:00–8:00 p.m.; overnight: 9:00 p.m.–4:00 a.m. | Trading is scheduled from Sunday evening through Friday evening, with a daily 8:00–9:00 p.m. pause. |
| NYSE Arca | Early: 4:00–9:30 a.m.; core: 9:30 a.m.–4:00 p.m.; late: 4:00–8:00 p.m.; overnight: 9:00 p.m.–4:00 a.m. | The displayed schedule includes the same daily 8:00–9:00 p.m. interval between late and overnight trading. NYSE labels its schedule highlights “Subject to SEC approval.” |
Nasdaq says overnight sessions are also scheduled to begin on Monday-through-Thursday exchange holidays, subject to its operating schedule. The Nasdaq schedule is not a promise that every U.S. venue, listed security or broker will be available overnight. Nasdaq’s trading information hub and NYSE’s extended-hours page describe the respective plans.
When does Nasdaq overnight trading start?
Nasdaq’s stated expected transition date is Sunday, December 6, 2026. That is a planned go-live date, not evidence that the overnight session has already launched. Nasdaq says the transition depends on readiness of the Securities Information Processor (SIP) and applicable SEC rule changes. Nasdaq’s Senior Vice President of North American Markets, Chuck Mack, said in Nasdaq’s September 22, 2026 account of an SEC roundtable that the exchange had “a lot of confidence in the December 6 date” and viewed it as the go-live, rather than a target. That confidence does not remove the stated launch conditions.

The regulatory and operational milestones are distinct. On April 10, 2026, the SEC approved Nasdaq’s amended proposal to extend trading hours to 23 hours a day, five days a week. Separately, the SEC approved the LULD Plan’s Amendment No. 27 on August 5, 2026, establishing phased overnight price-band protections. Exchange-rule approval does not by itself establish that market data, clearing and other operational arrangements are ready. See the SEC’s Nasdaq rulemaking entry and the Federal Register order on the LULD Plan amendment.
NYSE says NYSE Arca’s extended-hours rules received SEC approval in February 2025 and that it is working toward a targeted 2026 launch. Its page also describes coordination on consolidated market-data feeds, proprietary data and clearing: DTCC plans to be open for clearing during extended hours. That target and those operational plans should not be read as confirmation of a launch date or as identical to Nasdaq’s readiness milestones.

How will trade date and settlement be affected?
For Nasdaq, the calendar date shown on an overnight execution depends on when the trade occurs. Nasdaq says settlement terms follow the assigned trade date.
| Execution time (Eastern Time) | Assigned trade date |
|---|---|
| 9:00 p.m. to midnight | The following calendar day |
| Midnight to 8:00 p.m. | The current calendar day |
This means a trade made during the evening overnight session can carry the next day’s trade date even though the investor placed it on the prior calendar evening. Check the trade confirmation and your broker’s settlement information rather than assuming that the date you submitted an order is its trade date. Nasdaq explains these rules in its 23/5 Trading Information Hub.

Will your broker let you trade overnight?
That cannot be determined from the exchange schedules alone. The available exchange information does not establish which retail brokers will support the sessions, which securities they will make eligible, what order types they will accept or what account-specific conditions may apply. Access depends on brokers and the supporting market infrastructure as well as on an exchange’s published hours.
Nasdaq’s schedule information covers Nasdaq-listed equities, but it says Nasdaq Texas, Nasdaq PSX and Nasdaq’s options exchanges retain their current schedules. Before relying on overnight access, look for your broker’s own announcement and confirm the eligible securities, order handling, session hours, fees and restrictions it specifies.

Could overnight prices be less reliable or more volatile?
They may be harder to trade at predictable prices. The SEC describes overnight trading historically as having lower liquidity and wider spreads, with potential for greater price volatility. A thinner market can mean fewer buyers and sellers at a given moment, a larger gap between the best displayed buying and selling prices, or a price that moves more when an order meets limited available interest. The reviewed sources do not provide a properly attributable numerical estimate for expected overnight volume or spreads.
The overnight LULD price bands are a guardrail for extraordinary price moves, not a guarantee of stable prices, a narrow spread, a completed order or protection against losses. A limit order can cap the price at which you are willing to buy or sell, but it may not execute; a market order can prioritize execution without guaranteeing a particular price. The SEC-approved plan describes phased implementation of the overnight protections, so the existence of the plan should not be mistaken for a promise that every risk is eliminated.
