ADP reported that U.S. private-sector employers added 90,000 jobs in September 2026, while year-over-year base pay growth was 3.2%. Those figures suggest continued hiring, not a halt—but a single monthly estimate cannot establish a durable labor-market trend. The claim that ADP’s own business is “feeling the chill” also needs a specific fiscal 2026 result or outlook metric; the available company announcement confirms that ADP issued fiscal 2027 guidance, but does not identify a weakening measure.
What ADP’s September jobs report says
ADP’s September 30, 2026 report estimated that private-sector employment increased by 90,000 jobs in September. ADP also reported year-over-year base pay growth of 3.2% and gross pay growth of 4.7%. These are ADP’s estimates and pay measures, not a government employment release.
The preceding month was weaker: ADP’s report page says private employers added 38,000 jobs in August 2026, describing that month’s pace as the slowest since January. The increase to 90,000 in September is inconsistent with a simple claim that hiring fell again month over month, though it does not by itself show whether the labor market is strengthening or weakening over a longer period.
How to interpret ADP’s hiring and pay figures
Hiring remains positive in the September estimate
An estimated 90,000 additional private-sector jobs means ADP counted more jobs than were lost in the month. It is a measure of net job change, not a count of every hire made. The August estimate of 38,000 provides recent context, but two monthly readings are not enough to establish a trend.

Base pay and gross pay measure different things
ADP reported base pay growth of 3.2% year over year and gross pay growth of 4.7% year over year for September. The measures should not be treated as interchangeable: gross pay can reflect compensation beyond base wages. Neither percentage alone establishes how workers’ inflation-adjusted purchasing power changed.
ADP’s report is a private-payroll estimate
ADP says its National Employment Report is an independent, high-frequency view of the private-sector labor market, built from aggregated and anonymized payroll data representing more than 26 million U.S. employees. ADP Research produces it with Stanford’s Digital Economy Lab. ADP is also a commercial payroll and HR-services provider, so the report draws on payroll data generated through its business; the stated methodology is anonymization and aggregation.

Because the report covers private-sector employment, it should not be casually equated with a government measure that may cover a different population or use a different method. The cited material does not establish a direct statistical comparison between ADP’s September estimate and a government series.

ADP’s investor-relations page says it released fourth-quarter and fiscal 2026 results on July 29, 2026, and provided a fiscal 2027 outlook. That announcement alone does not establish that the company’s business weakened: a specific revenue, bookings, margin, client-growth, or outlook figure and its comparison are needed to support that conclusion. Without the relevant result and management explanation, “feels the chill” remains headline framing rather than a demonstrated finding.

That distinction matters because ADP occupies two roles here: it sells payroll and HR solutions to employers, and it publishes an employment report based on payroll data. Its monthly jobs estimate informs discussion of the labor market, but it is not evidence by itself that ADP’s own revenue or outlook is deteriorating.

- Supported: ADP reported September year-over-year base pay growth of 3.2% and gross pay growth of 4.7%.
- Not established by these figures: That the labor market is in a sustained downturn, or that ADP’s own business is weakening.
