Alabama was the pregame pick in two of the cited previews, but the betting snapshots disagreed on the spread—and neither side had a decisive statistical edge. The Oct. 3, 2026, SEC matchup put Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell against Mississippi State quarterback Kamario Taylor. The game was scheduled for noon ET on ABC; the figures below are historical pregame analysis, not a live betting recommendation. No final score or settlement status was verified.
What the quarterbacks had done before kickoff
In its Oct. 3 preview, the Associated Press described both quarterbacks as first-year starters and reported these season-to-date passing numbers:
| Quarterback | Completions | Passing yards | Touchdowns | Interceptions |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Keelon Russell, Alabama | 71% | 1,129 | 8 | 2 |
| Kamario Taylor, Mississippi State | 69% | 1,192 | 14 | 2 |
Those AP figures show Taylor with more passing yards and touchdowns, while Russell had the slightly higher completion rate. They describe performance entering this game, not its outcome. Associated Press preview.
Where the matchup could turn
Mississippi State’s passing game against Alabama pressure
Pro Football Focus reported that Taylor completed 57.9% of his passes when blitzed and 73.5% when not blitzed. In PFF’s data, Alabama blitzed on 47.1% of its defensive snaps. That makes pressure a central matchup question: Taylor’s lower completion rate against blitzes gives Alabama a potential route to disrupt the Bulldogs, but it does not establish how he would perform against this defense on game day. Alabama’s ground game against the Bulldogs’ run defense
PFF said Russell averaged 8.1 yards per carry when sacks were excluded, and Alabama had scored 13 rushing touchdowns through Week 4. Mississippi State’s defense had allowed one rushing touchdown through Week 4, according to PFF. Russell’s running ability gives Alabama another way to move the ball beyond his passing line; the Bulldogs’ early rushing-touchdown figure is a counter-indicator, not proof that they could contain him or the Tide’s full rushing attack.
Mississippi State’s early offensive production
The AP reported that the Bulldogs entered the game averaging 533.3 yards and 43 points per game. It also described Mississippi State as No. 16 and Alabama as No. 7 in its game-week framing. The Bulldogs had rallied to beat Missouri and were seeking their first 3-0 SEC start since 2014; Alabama was facing its first ranked opponent of the season. Mississippi State’s production makes an Alabama cover less automatic, even with the Tide favored in some pregame picks. The AP also noted Mississippi State had lost 11 straight games against top-10 opponents; that historical run is context, not a forecast of this game. AP game preview.

Who was the better pregame pick?
Alabama was the more common side among the picks visible here: theScore’s excerpt showed Alabama -5.5, and Covers’ Top 25 writer backed the Tide at -5.5 and up to -6.5. PFF’s two analysts also picked Alabama, with Max Chadwick projecting a 33–24 win and Dalton Wasserman projecting 38–34. Those are individual forecasts, not a consensus score or guarantee. Covers’ separate ATS table favored Mississippi State +6.5, underscoring that the spread evidence was mixed.
For a pregame handicap, Alabama’s pressure against Taylor and Russell’s rushing value supported the Tide; Mississippi State’s reported offensive production and Taylor’s passing output made the Bulldogs a credible challenge. The strongest defensible conclusion is a lean toward Alabama in the cited forecasts, not certainty about the winner or a recommendation to bet. The game was already scheduled to have kicked off by the time of the evidence cutoff, and no result was verified here.
