Jaguars coach Liam Coen says Travis Hunter’s role is about helping Jacksonville win, not maximizing his offensive snaps or justifying his draft position. An Associated Press report carried by theScore said Hunter had played 15 offensive snaps in the team’s first three games, as receiver competition and more two-tight-end formations limited his opportunities on offense.
What Coen said about Hunter’s role
Coen framed the conversation around the team’s results rather than Hunter’s playing time or the cost of acquiring him. “He cares about winning. That’s what he cares about,” Coen said. “And all the other stuff, the reps, where we picked him, I don’t (care) and neither does he. We care about winning, and that’s it.”
The comment addresses two pressures surrounding Hunter: the expectation that a high-profile player should receive a large workload, and the attention on Jacksonville’s decision to trade up for him. Coen’s stated position is that neither determines how the team uses him.
Why Hunter’s offensive snaps were limited
The Associated Press report said Hunter played 15 offensive snaps across Jacksonville’s first three games. It attributed his smaller receiver role to the Jaguars’ personnel and formations, rather than identifying a single cause.

- Jacksonville had traded for receiver Jakobi Meyers late in the year.
- Parker Washington had taken the No. 1 receiver role, while rookie Josh Cameron was emerging.
- The Jaguars were using two tight ends more often, leaving fewer receiver spots in those formations.
That account describes a crowded and changing offense, but it does not establish how many snaps Hunter would receive in later games or whether his role would expand.
Hunter’s defense has also begun to make an impact
The report contrasted Hunter’s limited offensive workload with signs of progress on defense. He broke up a pass in Week 2 against Denver and recorded his first interception the following week against New England. The report also said he had played more offense than defense the previous season, making this a change in emphasis from the role many expected.

Hunter’s availability followed a right-knee ligament injury sustained in practice that ended his previous season. According to the AP account, he did not receive full clearance until the start of training camp. The story does not say that the injury alone explains his current offensive usage.
Why the draft trade remains part of the discussion
Jacksonville moved up three spots in the 2025 draft to select Hunter. The AP report said the Jaguars sent two first-round picks, one second-round pick and one fourth-round pick to Cleveland; Cleveland returned fourth- and sixth-round selections.

That substantial cost helps explain why Hunter’s playing time draws scrutiny, but Coen rejected draft position as a reason to set his workload. Jaguars executive vice president Tony Boselli made a similar point on his radio show, saying Hunter was one of the 53 players trying to win games and adding, “We love him.” Boselli also acknowledged that Hunter was not perfect, as no player is.

Coen’s remarks make the team’s public rationale clear: Jacksonville says it will use Hunter according to what it believes helps it win, not to meet a snap-count expectation tied to his profile or draft status. The AP report offers personnel competition and formation choices as context for the 15 offensive snaps, alongside early defensive contributions.

Those statements do not amount to a promise that Hunter will remain in a limited offensive role, nor do they establish a future snap target. The report’s record of Jacksonville being 2-1 and scheduled to visit Cincinnati on Sunday reflects the timing of that story, not a current standings update or a verified result of that game.
