1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn a MongoDB replica set, w: 1 means the primary has acknowledged the write; it does not mean a secondary has a copy. If the primary fails before the write replicates, MongoDB may roll it back. Adding j: true makes the primary wait for its journal, but still does not require replication. Those are separate guarantees: acknowledgment by a member, persistence to that member’s journal, replication to other members, and visibility at a majority-committed read point.
What does MongoDB w: 1 actually guarantee?
In a replica set, w: 1 requires acknowledgment from the primary only. The write has been applied on that member, but no secondary is required to acknowledge it. MongoDB’s current 9.0 Manual warns that a write acknowledged this way can be rolled back if the primary steps down before the write has replicated to a secondary.
The failure window
- The primary applies the write.
- It returns a
w: 1acknowledgment to the client. - The write has not yet replicated to a secondary.
- The primary fails or steps down. The write may be rolled back during the resulting election and recovery.
So a successful response is not proof that a failover-safe replica copy exists. This is the rollback window: the time between primary acknowledgment and replication to another member.
Does j: true prevent rollback?
No. Journaling changes when a member acknowledges its portion of a write; it does not change how many members w requires. With numeric w, an unspecified j means acknowledgment after in-memory application. Setting j: true requires the members counted by w to write the change to their on-disk journals before acknowledging.

Standalone: w: 1, j: true |

MongoDB documents that journaling is always enabled starting in version 6.1 for the applicable storage engine. That does not silently change numeric w with j unspecified into journal acknowledgment: the acknowledgment rule remains in-memory application. Journal records still in WiredTiger buffers may be lost after a hard shutdown. MongoDB’s documented journal behavior is not a hardware-level guarantee for every disk, filesystem, hypervisor, or power-loss scenario.
The in-memory storage engine has no separate journal. MongoDB says j: true writes are immediately acknowledged there; an in-memory voting member requires writeConcernMajorityJournalDefault: false, and majority writes can otherwise fail in that configuration.

How is w: "majority" different?
w: "majority" requires acknowledgment from a calculated majority of data-bearing voting members in the replica set. It is therefore a stronger replica-set acknowledgment than w: 1: more members must participate before success is returned, reducing the chance that the acknowledged write will be rolled back if the primary fails. MongoDB describes the relationship probabilistically; majority acknowledgment is not a promise against every possible failure.
In the documented default configuration, writeConcernMajorityJournalDefault is true, so majority acknowledgment waits for the relevant journal flush. Administrators can set it to false; MongoDB documents that majority writes may then roll back if a majority of nodes suffer transient loss. Check the setting rather than assuming that a majority acknowledgment included journal persistence.

Why majority acknowledgment can still precede secondary visibility
Beginning with MongoDB 8.0, a majority write can be acknowledged after data-bearing members have durably written its oplog entry, while applying the entry to each secondary’s collections happens asynchronously. In earlier documented behavior, acknowledgment waited until the secondaries had applied the write. Do not assume that the 8.0 timing applies to older releases.
Consequently, majority acknowledgment and immediate visibility to a secondary read are different conditions. A secondary can be behind even after a majority write has succeeded.

Will a read see a write that was just acknowledged?
A write acknowledgment describes the write concern condition; it does not by itself specify the read point for a later query. A primary read and a secondary read can observe different states, particularly while secondaries are catching up.
MongoDB’s majority read concern returns data at the majority-commit point. Outside transactions, documents returned with this read concern are guaranteed not to roll back. That read point may lag the newest write, and a lagging secondary is not guaranteed to expose a just-acknowledged majority write immediately.

If an application reads from secondaries and needs read-your-own-write behavior, MongoDB recommends causal consistency. Within a transaction, the majority read concern guarantee applies only if the transaction commits with majority write concern.
What does a write concern timeout mean?
A wtimeout error means MongoDB did not satisfy the requested acknowledgment threshold before the time limit. It does not undo a modification already applied on the primary, and the write may still replicate afterward. Treat the outcome as ambiguous: the write may exist on some nodes even though the client received a write concern error. Application retry logic should account for possible duplicate effects or use an operation design that can safely handle retries.
Waiting for more members can increase latency. If members lag or become unavailable, a stronger write concern may take longer or time out rather than returning the requested acknowledgment promptly.
How should you choose a write concern?
- Use
w: 1only when primary acknowledgment and lower waiting requirements are appropriate, and your application can tolerate the documented rollback window. - Use
w: 1, j: truewhen you want the primary’s journal acknowledgment but do not require another member to confirm the write. It does not close the replication-related rollback window. - Use
w: "majority"when you need acknowledgment by a majority of data-bearing voting members. Confirm the value ofwriteConcernMajorityJournalDefaultand account for latency and member availability. - Pair write and read concerns with the application’s visibility needs. If clients read from secondaries and must observe their own writes, use causal consistency rather than assuming a successful majority write makes every secondary immediately current.
Inspect the replica-set topology and configured defaults. Arbiters affect implicit write concern: MongoDB documents an edge case in which a set with arbiters can have an implicit { w: 1 } rather than { w: "majority" } when data-bearing non-arbiters do not outnumber the voting majority. Do not infer the effective default from the word “replica set” alone.

MongoDB’s development checklist recommends at least three data-bearing voting members, w: "majority", and journaling for replica-set-wide durability. This is deployment guidance, not proof of zero data loss under every failure model. The appropriate choice still depends on the failures your system must tolerate and the latency it can accept.
