Georges Niang got a look at small-ball center during a Warriors training-camp scrimmage, but the team has not announced a regular role for him at the position. Steve Kerr’s reported assessment is conditional: Niang may work at center when the lineup around him fits, with possible offensive value balanced against concerns about protecting the rim.
What happened at Warriors training camp?
Niang played some small-ball center during a Thursday scrimmage, according to an item on his NBA.com player page, dated October 3, 2026. The page attributes the report to Luca Evans of the San Francisco Chronicle. CBS Sports published a RotoWire-sourced account on October 2 that also describes Kerr’s view of Niang as a possible small-ball five.
The reports describe a camp look, not a confirmed rotation assignment. Neither says how frequently Niang will play center, whether the experiment will continue into the regular season, or which teammates would share the floor with him.
Why might the Warriors use Niang at center?
Kerr’s reported assessment is that Niang can play small-ball five if the Warriors surround him with the right group. That qualification matters: the idea depends on the lineup, rather than on Niang being treated as a conventional center. CBS Sports’ RotoWire-sourced report says Kerr sees potential offensive punch from such a group, while raising a concern about rim protection.

In practical terms, the proposed tradeoff is offensive potential against the defensive work required near the basket. The reports provide no game sample or lineup statistics to show whether the approach has been effective; the offensive upside and rim-protection concern are Kerr’s reported evaluation, not measured results.
What is known—and not known—about Niang’s role?
NBA.com lists Niang at 6 feet 6 inches and 230 pounds on its player profile. Those are profile measurements, not evidence of how he will defend particular matchups or perform at center.
