A hydraulic issue stranded the Yankees on their charter aircraft for more than five hours before the team switched airports and flew to Tampa. The Associated Press reported that the team reached Tampa around 1 a.m. Friday, roughly ten and a half hours after arriving at Westchester County Airport. For ordinary travelers, the useful lesson is not that you can copy the team’s airport switch: it is to know what your airline promises during a disruption and understand your options before accepting a changed itinerary.
What happened to the Yankees’ plane?
According to the Associated Press, the Yankees arrived at Westchester County Airport at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday for their charter flight to Tampa ahead of the American League Division Series. A hydraulic issue affected the aircraft, and the team spent more than five hours aboard it. Manager Aaron Boone told AP, “Hydraulics issue. Didn’t have a tall enough ladder to fix it.” He added, “I offered to go get my ladder at home. Declined.” The report does not identify the charter operator, the component involved, or the maintenance details.
After the wait, the team boarded a bus for the roughly 30-mile (48-kilometer) trip from Westchester to LaGuardia Airport. The charter departed around 10 p.m. and arrived at Tampa International Airport about 1 a.m. Friday, AP reported.
Why did the Yankees switch airports?
The team’s reported solution was to leave the disabled aircraft at Westchester, travel by bus to LaGuardia, and depart from there on another charter flight. Gerrit Cole described the unusual routing to AP: “We drove further away from Tampa and then we worked our way closer back to Tampa, and then we flew to Tampa.”

That was a charter-team response, not a standard option for ticketed passengers. The AP account does not establish that commercial travelers could switch airports or arrange a replacement flight themselves. If your airline cancels or substantially changes a trip, ask the operating carrier about its available rebooking options rather than assuming you can reproduce the Yankees’ arrangement.
How long were the Yankees delayed?
AP reported an airport arrival around 2:30 p.m. Thursday and a Tampa arrival around 1 a.m. Friday, a span of roughly ten and a half hours. The headline described the ordeal as 10 hours. The team spent more than five hours aboard the original aircraft before traveling to LaGuardia; the report does not give a precise breakdown of every portion of the wait and transfer.

While waiting, players played cards and video games, talked, watched sports, and scrolled on their phones. Cole told AP: “Just hung out, cards, conversations,” followed by “Ribbing each other, video games, doom scrolling.”
What should I do if my flight is delayed for hours?
- Check the airline’s app or website. Confirm the flight status and watch for revised departure times, gate changes, or cancellation notices. Conditions and operations can change while you wait.
- Ask what help is available. Contact airline staff about rebooking, meals, lodging, or other assistance. These are not all automatic entitlements: carriers make different commitments, and some assistance depends on the cause and circumstances of the disruption.
- Look up the carrier’s current promises. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airline Cancellation and Delay Dashboard lists airline commitments for controllable delays and cancellations. DOT describes controllable disruptions as airline-caused and gives maintenance, crew, cleaning, baggage loading, and fueling as examples. Commitments vary by carrier, including for partner-airline rebooking and amenities, so check the live dashboard and the relevant airline’s customer-service plan.
- Keep the key records. Save your ticket or itinerary, flight number, dates, city pair, airline notices, correspondence, and relevant receipts. New York’s Attorney General recommends keeping documentation when pursuing a complaint or claim.
Can I get a refund if my flight is significantly delayed?
Under DOT guidance, a ticketed passenger whose flight is significantly changed or delayed may be entitled to a refund if they decline the alternative itinerary. This can apply even to a non-refundable ticket. A passenger who accepts and travels on the changed itinerary generally is not entitled to a refund under DOT rules. Check the DOT’s refund guidance and compare the offered alternative with your needs before deciding.

A refund and a carrier’s additional customer-service commitments are separate matters. Refund eligibility does not by itself mean you are owed extra cash for inconvenience; rebooking, meals, hotels, and other assistance depend on the carrier’s commitments and the circumstances. If an airline does not honor a promise in its service plan, DOT says to contact the airline first; DOT also offers a complaint route. New York consumers can submit complaints to the state Attorney General’s office, which has urged airline travelers to know their rights during winter-weather disruptions.
