AT&T’s dividend is smaller than it was before the WarnerMedia transaction, but the cut does not by itself establish that today’s payout is safe. AT&T reported a $1.11 annualized dividend per common share in its Q2 2026 results. Its durability depends on whether free cash flow after investment can cover distributions while the company manages debt and preserves room for network spending; the board reviews the dividend annually.
Why did AT&T cut its dividend?
AT&T reset its dividend in connection with the WarnerMedia transaction. In a February 1, 2022 filing, the company said it expected an annual common dividend of $1.11 per share after the transaction and described a 40% target payout ratio for the first full year after closing. A lower payout reduces the cash burden compared with the former dividend. The present sustainability question is whether recurring cash generation after capital investment can support distributions and the company’s other funding priorities.
How much does AT&T pay per share?
AT&T’s Q2 2026 results reiterated an expected annualized common dividend of $1.11 per share. The company also said it plans to return more than $45 billion through dividends and share repurchases during 2026–2028. A dividend yield cannot be stated meaningfully without a dated share price: it changes as the stock price moves. The annualized per-share dividend is the more stable figure to compare with a specific share price and date.
Can AT&T’s free cash flow cover the dividend?
Coverage should be assessed using AT&T’s own free-cash-flow (FCF) definition and the dividends actually paid for the same period. The company calculates FCF from operating cash flow, adjusted for DIRECTV-related items, less capital expenditures and vendor financing. Its payout ratio divides common and preferred dividends paid by that defined FCF. FCF after investment matters because network spending is already deducted in the company’s measure. But a favorable payout ratio in one reporting period cannot guarantee future coverage: operating cash flow, capital expenditures, vendor financing, and dividend decisions can change.
How debt and investment affect dividend durability
AT&T reported net debt-to-adjusted EBITDA of 2.71x at the end of Q1 2026. Its stated target is the 2.5x range. In its Q2 outlook, the company connected the expected return to that range to about three years after the EchoStar transaction closes. Debt reduction, network investment, and shareholder distributions all draw on the company’s financial capacity. AT&T says its dividend policy considers stockholder expectations, capital-funding needs, and long-term growth opportunities. - Leverage progress: Separate reported debt levels from the company’s 2.5x-range target and its expected timing for reaching it.
- Capital demands: Watch whether cash generation can support distributions while meeting network investment and debt priorities.
- Board decisions: Treat the annual dividend review as an ongoing decision, not a permanent promise.
