Nintendo is having a strong Switch 2 run, but the available 2026 figures do not prove it is beating PlayStation and Xbox overall. Nintendo’s latest cited total is 23.68 million Switch 2 hardware units worldwide through June 30, 2026. Sony reported 1.6 million PS5 units for the quarter ending that day, while Microsoft reported a decline in Xbox content-and-services revenue—not console shipments. Those figures measure different things over different periods, so they cannot establish a single winner.
What do the 2026 figures actually show?
The headline depends on what “beating” means. Nintendo reports cumulative worldwide Switch 2 unit totals; Sony’s cited figure covers one quarter of PS5 hardware sell-in; Microsoft’s cited Xbox result is revenue from content and services. They are useful indicators of each company’s performance, but they are not a like-for-like ranking.

The periods and measures in this table differ. In particular, comparing Nintendo’s lifetime total with Sony’s single-quarter sell-in number would not show which platform sold more during 2026. Microsoft’s revenue change cannot be converted into an Xbox hardware ranking.
How strong is Nintendo’s Switch 2 performance?
Nintendo’s FY2026 results offer a clearer view of sales during a defined reporting period. For the fiscal year ended March 31, 2026, the company reported 19.86 million Switch 2 hardware units and 48.71 million software units. That fiscal-year hardware figure is a period total, unlike Nintendo’s later 23.68 million worldwide lifetime figure through June 30.

Nintendo also reported that Mario Kart World sold 14.70 million units in FY2026, including bundle sales. This is a software figure for a named game, not an additional hardware total. Nintendo said Switch 2 launched in June 2025 and described its start as good; that assessment is the company’s characterization, not a comparison proving it outsold competing platforms.
Can we say Nintendo is ahead of PlayStation and Xbox?
Not from these figures alone. A defensible cross-platform sales ranking would need the same market, dates, and measurement method for all three companies—for example, worldwide hardware units sold to consumers during the same calendar-year period. The cited company disclosures do not supply that comparison.

- For a hardware ranking: compare hardware units over the same period and geography, and distinguish lifetime totals from quarterly or annual sales. Also check whether the figures are sell-in to retailers or sell-through to customers.
- For a software comparison: use the same period and account for whether bundles are included. Nintendo’s Mario Kart World figure includes bundle sales.
- For a business-performance comparison: compare equivalent revenue or profit measures. A change in Xbox content-and-services revenue does not directly measure console demand.
Without that common basis, “Nintendo is beating PlayStation and Xbox” is broader than the evidence supports. The narrower conclusion is that Switch 2 had substantial reported sales momentum through June 2026, while these particular disclosures do not determine an overall console winner.

Nintendo’s investor-relations calendar scheduled its six-month FY2027 earnings release for November 5, 2026. As of October 3, 2026, that release was still in the future, so the figures above should be read with their stated June and March cutoffs rather than as a complete year-end comparison.
