Peter Caton’s photo book After 1066: Photographs of an English Landscape follows places connected with William the Conqueror’s invasion and its aftermath, from Pevensey Bay to Yorkshire. It is a photographic interpretation of those landscapes, not a definitive reconstruction of a single documented route: English Heritage says no account of the invasion describes William’s journey from Pevensey to Hastings.
What Peter Caton’s photographic journey sets out to show
In After 1066: Photographs of an English Landscape, published by RRB Photobooks, Caton turns his camera on places associated with the Norman Conquest and its consequences. The project, as reported by PetaPixel, moves through Pevensey Bay, Battle, Wallingford, Berkhamsted, Ely and Yorkshire.
Rather than stage battle scenes, Caton photographs places as they exist now: ordinary or altered landscapes in which the past is not always immediately visible. Asked what still remains in the landscape nearly a thousand years after the Conquest, Caton told PetaPixel: “I was surprised by how ordinary these places were. Rather than trying to recreate history, I wanted to photograph the landscapes as they exist today and encourage people to look more carefully at places that have quietly shaped England’s history.”
Tracy Marshall-Grant, who contributed the book’s introductory essay, describes the photographs as asking readers to see landscapes not as “simply backdrops to history but living witnesses to it.” Both quotations were published by PetaPixel.

“Retraces” means following associated places, not a proven itinerary
English Heritage dates William’s landing at Pevensey to the morning of 28 September 1066. The fleet reached the Sussex coast and disembarked there; the Battle of Hastings followed 16 days later. But English Heritage notes that the invasion accounts do not describe William’s route from Pevensey to Hastings, and considers travel by ship more likely than an overland journey around the marshy bay.
The modern coast is also not the coast William’s forces encountered. English Heritage says the sea came closer to Pevensey’s fort in 1066 than it does today, and the shoreline has since changed substantially. Caton’s route should therefore be understood as a present-day photographic tracing of places associated with the invasion, the consolidation of Norman power and resistance—not a settled medieval itinerary or an unchanged view of 1066.
The places in Caton’s project
PetaPixel describes the project’s sequence of locations and their historical associations. These are stops in Caton’s photographic journey, not proof that William followed one continuous, fully documented route through each of them.

Pevensey Bay: the landing landscape
Pevensey is associated with the Norman landing. Its present shoreline and coastal defences differ from the landscape of 1066, making the gap between historical event and modern view part of the project’s subject.

In the account of the project, Wallingford is associated with the Thames crossing on William’s advance toward London.

Berkhamsted: submission and a castle landscape
Berkhamsted is linked in the project’s account with the submission of English nobles in December 1066. Its earthworks give Caton another way to examine how a place carries traces of a major political change.
Ely and the Fens: waterways and resistance
The project turns to Ely and the Fenland waterways in connection with resistance after the Conquest. The photographs place that history within a landscape shaped by water and marsh.
Yorkshire: farmland and the aftermath
Caton’s Yorkshire landscapes are associated with the aftermath of the Harrying of the North. The project’s focus is what can be seen in the landscape now; the photographs should not be taken as evidence for a precise route or a complete account of the events.

What the Conquest changed—and what surviving places can tell us
The Norman Conquest reshaped England through castle and cathedral building and brought changes to government, culture and society, according to VisitEngland. Those broad changes help explain why a project about landscapes can extend beyond the battlefield and the invasion coast.
Surviving structures need careful dating, however. Historic England uses York as an example of castle building intended to secure Norman control: a castle was first built on that site in the 11th century, but the remains there mostly date from the 13th century. A present-day ruin or earthwork can mark a long history of building and rebuilding; it should not automatically be described as a surviving structure from 1066.
VisitEngland identifies 2027 as the 1,000th anniversary of William the Conqueror’s birth. That anniversary gives the subject renewed attention, but it is separate from the 1066 events that Caton’s book examines.

A separate walking route: Pevensey to Rye
Readers who want to explore part of the region on foot can use the 1066 Country Walk, a separate 31-mile route from Pevensey to Rye. It is not a walk of Caton’s full photographic journey across England.
- Route: Pevensey to Rye, via Herstmonceux Castle, Battle Abbey and Battlefield, Winchelsea and Rye, according to Visit 1066 Country.
- Planning: The official guide divides the walk into six sections of three to four hours each and recommends OS Map 124.
- Safety: The guide warns of busy road crossings, including the A27 and A21. Check current route conditions and access before setting out.
The book and the walk offer different ways into the subject: Caton’s project interprets a wider set of historical landscapes through photography, while the marked walk is a specific local route between Pevensey and Rye.
