A set of golf clubs can include a 3-wood, long irons, a putter, or a sand wedge that does not suit the golfer carrying it. The answer is not to remove the same clubs from every bag: check what your set contains, which clubs you can use confidently, and whether another loft or club type better fits your game.
What counts as a standard golf set?
There is no single standard configuration. A typical package may include a driver, fairway wood or woods, hybrids, irons, wedges, and a putter. One common men’s configuration runs from a 4-iron through a sand wedge, while women’s sets often substitute higher-lofted hybrids for harder-to-launch long irons. Entry-level bundles may start their irons at 5-iron and range from lean eight-club sets to full 14-piece packages.
Those are examples, not a rule. Check the clubs in your bag and the distance gaps between them before deciding that a set is missing something or carrying a club you should replace. See Golf Monthly’s 2026 package-set guide for examples of how package contents vary.
Why some clubs are harder to use
3-wood: demanding from the turf
A 3-wood’s relatively low-profile face can make clean contact difficult, especially from tight turf. Many golfers carry one but rarely choose it. A 5-wood or a low-lofted hybrid may be easier for some mid- to high-handicap players to launch, though the tradeoff can include less distance. That is a possibility to compare, not a guaranteed result.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Consider whether you need the club mainly from the tee, from the fairway, or both. Compare launch, usable distance, and how it fits between the clubs you already hit; a club that is theoretically long is of little help if you cannot use it reliably.
4- and 5-irons: lower launch demands
Long irons have less loft and a smaller face than shorter irons, making them harder for many golfers to launch and strike consistently. If your longest irons stay in the bag, compare a hybrid or utility club in a similar distance role. Modern game-improvement irons may also use wider soles, more offset, and higher moment of inertia (MOI) to reduce the penalty of off-center contact.

Compare the options by launch, distance gaps, comfort at address, and performance from the situations where you actually play them. A replacement should fill a useful gap rather than simply add another club with overlapping distance.
Putter: stock length is not a fitting rule
Golf Monthly describes 34 inches as a typical off-the-shelf putter length, but a stock length will not suit every setup. Poor posture, elbows crowded against the body, having to grip unusually far up or down the handle, or a putter sole that does not sit flat are signs to check fit. They are reasons to investigate, not a universal height-to-length formula.

A mallet is generally more stable than a blade, but head shape, alignment preference, and stroke feel are personal. Compare putters while using a comfortable posture and setup rather than choosing by head style alone.
Sand wedge: loft is only one part of the fit
A package-set sand wedge is commonly 56 degrees with substantial bounce, but that combination is not right for everyone. Golfers who struggle in bunkers might compare a 58- or 60-degree wedge; that is not a blanket recommendation. Loft gaps, bounce, sole shape, sand and turf conditions, technique, and the shots you need all affect the choice.

TaylorMade explains that wedges typically have lower MOI than other clubs because they are designed for shot-making rather than outright forgiveness. A different loft alone will not resolve every bunker or short-game difficulty.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What “forgiveness” means—and what it cannot promise
MOI, or moment of inertia, describes resistance to twisting. TaylorMade’s MOI explainer identifies cavity backs and perimeter weighting as design approaches used to increase iron MOI. A higher-MOI iron can reduce some of the penalty from a mishit; it cannot erase swing tendencies, straighten every miss, or guarantee a lower score.

The USGA’s club-head equipment rule sets a 5,900 g·cm² driver-head MOI limit, with a 100 g·cm² test tolerance, for a specified axis and 60-degree lie measurement. That is a conformance specification for the stated driver-head test, not a general forgiveness rating for irons, wedges, or every club.
How to decide whether a club belongs in your bag
- Inventory your set. Note each club, its loft if known, and the distances you can use in practice and on the course.
- Identify the problem. Is the club hard to launch, uncomfortable to set up with, inconsistent from a particular lie, or redundant with another club?
- Compare alternatives in the same role. For a long club, compare a 3-wood with a 5-wood, hybrid, utility club, or long iron. For a putter or wedge, compare setup and shot requirements as well as the club’s label or loft.
- Check the gaps and situations. Make sure the alternative covers a useful distance and works from the tee, turf, bunker, or other situations where you expect to use it.
- Keep what works. If a supposedly difficult club gives you a dependable option, there is no reason to replace it merely because many other golfers struggle with that type.
Golf Monthly’s feature on clubs that can be difficult to use in a standard set discusses these potential pain points. Its observations describe common fit questions, not a rule that every golfer should discard the same clubs.
